I’ve driven by this location many times and never knew it was here. It was until I needed a couple of keys cut and programmed to my car that I found it. It wasn’t on Unilocal yet, but did show up on google, without any reviews. Since Cothron’s is a chain I decided to give them a shot. And I am glad I did. What: I had 2 blank chipped keys, that I needed cut and programmed. The process: Originally, I Unilocaled and googled for locksmiths where I called and got a couple of quotes. $ 110 from the Key guy was the cheapest. $ 75 if I was willing to drive all the way down to South Austin(would definitely recommend him if you need a mobile locksmith). I had driven out to him once before but I brought the wrong set of keys and I didn’t want to make that drive out again. =( Other mobile locksmiths were a bit pricier. $ 150. One said $ 135 per key, and then said he could give me the second one half off. It was after that call that I decided to take it upon myself to find a local shop. That’s when I found Cothrons, walked into the location, gave them my keys, told them what I wanted done and they went right to work. I was a bit nervous because I forgot to ask how much it would cost but I figured I would wait it out since they had already started the job. The keys were cut and smoothed in less than 5 minutes, and they went out and programmed the keys in less than 10 minutes. Final bill: $ 54 for programming both keys. I spent an extra $ 2 on various key rings they had on the counter. That is the cheapest you will find for cutting multiple transponder keys. I believe Walmart(1431, Whitestone Location) has a machine that cuts chipped keys for $ 30 each but they have a very limited selection. If you are in the area and need Car keys cut I highly recommend Cothrons. Just be sure to call ahead to make sure they have the key you need. If not hit up Ebay for cheap key blanks and take them in.
