Place is under new ownership, and I have to say the subs are better than ever. Turkey Bacon Avacado… with ranch… killer!

Very friendly staff. Was given the suggestion to try the cordon bleu sandwich, and it was AMAZING. The honey mustard on it is a game changer. Super cheap subs and the bread is fantastic. Highly recommend!

Good subs come from this small shop that is tucked away off of main. I was at work and just happened to see the front and stopped in for lunch. My sub wasn’t mind blowing, but it was really good and wasn’t like any other sub shops sandwiches. The workers were pleasant and they have a small outdoor seating area which was enjoyable.

Miss the ‘sub-nazi’ guy, but the sandwich quality is still there … 4″ bacon-chicken-ranch hit the spot! :)

A great place is now even better with great new owners! Sandwich was delicious. So much better than the chain sub shops.

Sadly, the owner of this legendary(to us) shop has retired and left town. We got some sandwiches today from the new owners. They are still using the exact same(expensive) meats and bread. They did some remodeling and it looks more fancy now. Kind of lost some of the low-rent ambience, but seriously it’s good. New owners are really nice and service was great. Still the best sub shop.

Bread was too big. While freshly made I didn’t think it tasted any better than something I could piece together with the contents of my fridge. Pricey.

I am not a sub fan but this one was very good. I had the vegan option: the ingredients were very fresh and the bread was nice and warm. It took a while to be prepared but we didn’t mind to wait. If it is worth, I am ok with it.

Big sandwiches! Ingredients all seemed fresh and prices were good. Only compliant is that there was a lot of bread. Homemade sauce was also great. I would go back, might try a wrap next time to avoid the bread overload!

I’m convinced that anyone who gave this place a bad review has either never been here, never had a sandwich before, or isn’t real. If you hate fresh food and good interaction, then by all means don’t eat here. if you DO like these things, then check this place out, because it has both in abundance.

There was only one employee in there and it took him like 15 minutes to make my sub. The bread was stale, the lettuce was old and borderline soggy. Everything was way over priced. I have no idea how the place stays afloat.

Second Street is under new ownership. It seems like the quality is suffering from this. Fingers crossed this is just temporary«Growing Pains.» I love Second Street for lunch and catering and will miss them if the quality doesn’t improve!

I’ve been craving a «grinder» like I could get at home in Connecticut and my search ended at 2nd street sub. We got a turkey with prov and hot peppers along with one of the variations of an Italian sub. Both hit the spot. The owner was fun to talk to and had a passion for his shop and product which is nice to see. The meatball is also very tastey. Portions of meat are massive unlike the chain across the street with 2 first names. We will be back regularly!

Very good sandwiches, I always go for the no. 5. Girl size for myself or one size up if I want to share or save half for later.

I got a deluxe with everything here, and it was the best sandwich I have had in a very long time. The bread was soft and fresh with a good crust to it, the meats and cheese are all good quality, and the veggies were delicious. The owner is also incredibly funny and entertaining while he makes the sandwiches. He’s a great guy to talk to and will make a sandwich however you like, even if you request it with disgusting black olives. I would definitely recommend this place if you’re downtown and looking for a good, quick meal.

Snapshot: Super-fresh subs made with local bread and Eastern Market veggies. UPDATE5÷1÷2014: I have since tried the #5 sandwich. It is absolutely, insanely good. Try it warmed up! It had 5 different meats, and is an amazing sub. So, so good. As a discerning foodie, I often find sub shops to be a battle against one another for complete mediocrity, all seemingly mastering the art of the«average» sandwich. For the most part, I just avoid them. Second Street Sub Shop is one of those exceptions. The use of fresh Dearborn bakery bread and local veggies seem to help take their flavors to the next level, rising above the ashed wasteland of completely dull and mediocre grinders. I’ve tried both the Italian and the Corned Beef, and both have been very enjoyable. In addition, I really liked the owner. His name escapes me, but he was a really interesting guy, and just acerbic enough in his banter to keep you on your toes. This is now my local sub shop for all things sandwich.

I used to come here years ago when I lived in Royal Oak, but it’s been quite some time. The man behind the counter has a great sense of humor. As I tried to make up my mind on what to order, he was slicing the meat in preparation for later. You don’t see that at Subway, Tubby’s, or really any chain sub shop. I had a #5 and a very delicious minestrone soup. When I returned to the office, my employee(who happened to get a sub earlier that day from Jimmy John’s) was practically drooling when he saw what I had as compared to the thing he ordered and he vowed he had to try this place!

More like 2.5 stars. Went here b/c we didn’t wanna drive out to Al’s famous deli or Bread Basket and I’m regretting it. I would say you pay for what you get but there’s nothing special about their sandwiches. Their breads are hoagie style and tasted stale, dry and untoasted. I got the 4″ veggie for $ 5 and my shredded lettuce was old and browning with cheese that tasted rotten. If it weren’t for the vinegar & oil I would’ve tossed it. They’re stingy on ingredients too. For such a thick bread, where’s my tomatoes? Add more filler lettuce if you need to! Fiancé got their $ 88“corned beef and again, don’t expect Jewish deli-pile-em-high sandwiches. This would be like 20% filled and again sparse on the fillers. Usually places will give you lots of fillers to compensate but this was just stingy all around. Surprisingly, DF didn’t mind(gotta love an easy going guy!) Lastly we got fries to go for $ 1.99 and they’re standard Del Taco crinkle cut. What shocked me was she put them in a cardboard tray and proceeded to wrap with plastic wrap(we got to go) and w/in 30 sec you could see the condensation and the fries just wilting! Now there’s a new pet peeve I never knew I had! Soggy fries! Do yourself a favor and go to Jimmy Johns on Main for a hoagie. Better yet, go to Bread Basket deli… it’s worth it!
