Honeybells in season for just a month. They are a hybrid of grapefruit and tangerine. The trees have about three dozen or more in them it seems. There is so much juice it almost explodes. The grove was packed and the woman owner was hilarious. Worth the trip and the picking.

Need something else to do with the grandparents/grandkids after visiting the manatee center? Dooley Groves is a great choice! Although it is basically the least accessible produce stand ever, it’s worth the trip from November to April, as you get the freshest possible orange juice and oranges. The«pick your own» gimmick can be good fun for little ones, and it is a quick enough excursion to keep interest. If you get a small basket(or have an excitable little one, thrilled to be picking her own fruit) the whole process is 20 minutes. Long enough for a bit of fun, short enough so as to not wear out its welcome. If you have the chance, get the honeybell oranges. They’re easy to peel by hand, seedless, and have a mild flavor for all palettes.

We had a blast picking our own honeybell oranges today! Cute little shop and yummy things to try! The fresh squeezed orange juice was amazing! Very sweet people there too.
