Hubbard’s Building Supply is one of those rare small businesses which will surprise you. While they can’t stock everything like a big-box chain store, what they do stock is reasonably priced and their customer service is exceptional. I hold small businesses to the same standards as the big boys when it comes to pricing and service, though; I don’t «buy local» just because it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, and I don’t shun box stores just because they’re all run by increasingly greedy and incompetent bastards. Both types of stores compete for the same dollars on the same playing field, so I judge them both by the same standards. Having said that, Hubbard’s has never disappointed me in the 20+ years I’ve been going there for hardware and building supplies. By comparison, the two nearest Lowe’s stores(both a half-hour away) usually disappoint me multiple times within the first 20+ minutes I’m in the store. If you need lumber or building supplies, shop around. Then go talk to somebody at Hubbard’s and prepare to be pleasantly surprised.
