Coventry Gallery and Custom Picture Framing

Coventry is a fairly new frame shop/​art gallery in midtown, and from what I’ve seen so far, I’m impressed. The owners, Erick and Lauren, are wonderfully nice and knowledgeable folks. Erick is an experienced and talented framer, and Lauren runs the business with professionalism and style. They gave me an exhibit in May and I was pleased with the care they took in displaying my work (and they even packed it up for me after the show!). I was also impressed with the carefully-​written and detailed contract I got. They have been willing to show art that’s outside the mainstream — a risk for any gallery, as this type of work usually doesn’t sell well — because they’re truly committed to supporting the work of local artists.
My only complaint (and it’s a concern, really, not a complaint) is that they’re not promoting the business as well as they could. Many galleries have stopped using expensive postcard announcements, and that’s understandable, but there are other ways to get the word out. I’d like to see the Coventry website list several months’ worth of upcoming shows. They’ve relied on a post-​exhibit «debriefing» that tells everyone about the fun that was had the previous month, but it doesn’t generate any buzz for future shows. That’s a shame, because this little shop/​gallery has great potential.
Coventry is located near two other small but good galleries. It would be fantastic if the three of them could coordinate some kind of big event to draw the type of huge crowds that generally congregate around 20^th and J Streets. I’ve seen big crowds at Coventry on Second Saturday but I really believe there’s a large segment of gallery-​hoppers that hasn’t discovered this little gem yet. Next Second Saturday, make it a point to walk the six blocks from 20^th and J over to 19^th and O. Trust me, it’s worth the trip.

This place is pretty cool. I really like the owners Erick and Lauren. They do amazing custom framing and custom mats for your art work and other items that you would want framed.
