James Mangan Rifle & Pistol Range

Just a post to let everyone know that the James Mangan range is (temporarily) closed. There are chains and padlocks on the front doors with a sign saying to contact Lori Bauder at (916) 808‑1196 or
with any questions you may have. It is my understanding that the city shut down the range because «for several years the Range hasn’t been maintained accordingly… to standards set for public shooting ranges.» Date for re-​opening is unknown (or at least not posted anywhere I can find). I’ve been to better ranges, but this one ain’t bad. The rangemasters are not jerks and are actually polite to their customers! And it’s really cheap to shoot here and there are no time limits.
But… It gets pretty hot in there during the warmer days of the year, don’t count on the electronic target retriever to work, and you can only load 5 rounds per magazine. (Never heard of this one before).
Other than that, I really didn’t mind shooting here. The only thing that bothered me the most was the heat.

It’s a good place. If you are thinking of doing requlas or some getting some training out of the way take a class with CSTA. They are the best. Wish we could get some money and clean this place up a little but still a great place. Staff is topnotch, Not a fan of their hours but they are there and we need more places like this.

Great place to go shooting. It only cost five dollars to get in. The only thing I didn’t like is that you can’t have more than five bullets in a magazine. Still giving it 5 stars.

On the bright side, it really doesn’t get much better than $ 5 to shoot somewhere, and if you buy a membership (annual) it’s reduced to $ 3. Also, they provide free targets for you to shoot.

There are some downsides however. The place is city run, so there are a number of very «anal» rules you’ll have to go bye when shooting here. First off, they do their lanes the old fashioned way, where you walk up to your target and clip on your targets yourself. No fancy electric doo-​hickeys that bring your targets to you at the press of a button. This means they have regular cease-​fires, where you have to wait a couple minutes for targets to be replaced. No rapid-​fire (pretty standard in most shooting ranges), and they are very strict about it too. Everything is very strict as far as where you have the gun and ammo while shooting, where you put your other (personal) stuff, and where you put additional guns. Also, and I find this one the most ridiculous, I was informed that you aren’t allowed to load more than 5 bullets in your magazine at once. So for example, I have and use 10-​round magazines (the maximum allowed legally in CA) for my 1911, and I was told that those weren’t permitted there, and that when loading my standard 7-​round magazine to only load 5 rounds. I was asked why and was given the response «that’s just the way we do it here.» Well no thanks, that’s idiotic, and very annoying. If someone can give me an explanation on this, I’d like to know it.
It also gets pretty warm inside, I understand the low budget, but a little AC on a hot day for paying customers enclosed in a sealed room with no air circulation… just saying.

Small hole in the wall, weird location by a school. They don’t rent out guns for safety reasons. The older gentlemen is the owner and he actually gave me a brief private lesson since it was my first time shooting 40 & 9 mm handguns. I wasn’t very comfortable holding them since my hands are so small. He was nice enough to thoroughly give me a lesson in a short amount of time. People like him you’ll always remember and come back. He’s very strict with his rules and that’s what makes for a safe and fun experience at the shooting range. It is a little on the hot side but for $ 5 per person, you can’t beat that. He even let’s you use his goggles and ear plugs!

Pretty Cool! I liked it. People are friendly & safety is priority. I am getting a membership here.

If you live in the sacramento area and dont feel like driving out to far this is the place to go. Its weekdays only hours vary somedays its 6pm to 9pm others its 6:30pm to 9pm. It’s only $ 5 to shoot if you a non member and $ 3 to shoot if you are a member and on tuesdays if your a member you get to shoot for FREE. I personaly became a member because its only $ 25 a year and it basicly pays for itself. there are 15 lanes give or take some may be down for repairs but theres always room to shoot. They have have eye and ear protection if you don’t have any. For the price of it tis a good place to shoot.
Pro:Cheap to shoot, 20 yard range, free targets, helpful range masters, safe place to shoo, tyou can shoot .22 rifle or pistols, and kid frendly when accompanied with an adult.
Con:Hours it opens and closes, does’nt allow shotguns, rife’s, or rifle rounds to be shot in this range, does’nt sell ammo (but there is a gunstore down the street)

The Gun Room? Psh… that place is a rip off and a drive from Sac. If you care more about shooting your gun and having more money to buy ammo with, then this is the place. $ 5 entry ($ 3 for members; $ 25/​yr) and free targets with electronic target stalls. They also have ear/​eye protection for free if needed for guests. This is a great spot to go after work on Mon/​Thurs. for pistols, though don’t go in there with your magnums, its not kosher and you’ll annoy everyone there. Just bring your pistol and a .22, as they are big advocates of the ¹⁰⁄₂₂ and other plinkers.
The only real con is the hours. I wish I could go there on weekends to shoot, but hey, I’m fine with going after work and shooting off some steam. Another con may be the lack of ammo sales… but range ammo is expensive, better off buying it elsewhere anyways.

It’s OK. The reason for one star is that the club is in very poor condition. There are 14 lanes but only 4 – 5 lanes work which causes for long waits. Also the target retrieval machine is often broken.
Also there is a double-​standard where certain members are allowed to bring in targets that other members aren’t allowed to bring. There will normally be a cease-​fire while the RO will set up certain targets for his favorites while the rest of us punch paper targets.
The Gun Room in Elk Grove is a much nicer with a full set of Gun Rentals, Targets, and Ammo.
Yes the price is very cheap of $ 5 but you pay the price of long waits, broken retrieval machines, and odd hours of 6−9pm Monday/​Thursday.
