A long time ago when I was in my early 20’s, Michael Himovitz (you know, one of the original gallery owners who started Art Second Saturday) graciously gave me a limited edition book by a local artist Stephanie Skalisky and spent time discussing art collecting with me. His advice: buy art that makes you a bit unsettled and challenges you. It’s been almost 20 years but his advice resonates with me still.
This last year we’ve been bringing our kids to Art Second Saturday and they’ve really enjoyed it. I strategically pick venues that I think the kids will enjoy — from both an art and interactive perspective — and only pick two or three stops for the evening.
Very glad we stopped here. They had cookies and a cute doxie puppy to please my kids (and wine to please me) as we enjoyed museum-​caliber mixed media, assemblage, paintings, drawings and sculptures. The depth of the artists’ work reminded me a great deal of my discussion with the late Mr. Himovitz.
