Since my son was a baby, he has had anxiety and panic attacks. Yes. A baby can have panic attacks. He was detached and had a tendency to become extremely overwhelmed in his environment, exceptionally moody and began isolated himself from others as soon as he could crawl. He started to have repetitive mannerisms. Doctors diagnosed him with a variety of disorders. From ADD with aggression to saying he may be on the autism spectrum — Aspergers. We were at a loss and sadly I pampered him which merely fed his issues. I began to tell myself that he was merely a person with a difficult personality. But he knew better even if I didn’t. He was recently diagnosed with social anxiety and panic disorder. Now as an adult, he has become more pro-active in finding help. This isn’t always the case for someone with anxiety disorder. When we found the SAGE program we were extremely skeptical. But they took my son’s insurance and my son gave them a try. SAGE has been an answer to our prayers so far. And the family night, although, I was hesitant and after two nights going my husband and I thought it was pointless. Janet was so kind and understanding. Never forceful or demeaning about our decision not to attend. But she encouraged us gently. I learned that I was completely off base. We needed to support our son’s healing. Whether we learned from family night or not. We were wrong! We have learned so much! It has been educational and relieving to see other people who suffer right along with their loved one as they fight to help them. We have learned not to coddle and accept and help the correct way for my son — depending on what week of the program he is in. We have never felt as though we were accused. Rather we were comforted in the fact that it is hard to live with someone with anxiety. And no matter how hard we try, we can make mistakes in the way we respond to our sons anxiety. SAGE is there to teach us, family members, too. They have informed my son and us this is a life long struggle but not impossible to live productively, happily and independently given the tools. SO far the tools they have given my son has changed his outlook and his ability to cope. Although the first weeks were very hard for him and us, He seems more relaxed after the fourth week. More so then I have ever seen my son. We could not thank these wonderful people enough for finally helping my son. I HIGHLYRECOMMENDSAGETOANYONESUFFERINGWITHANANXIETYDISORDER.
