After leaving LA and my beloved local dance studio, I was thrilled to find samba classes offered through the Experimental College at UC Davis. Marta of Samba da Terra teaches the class. She is an amazing dancer and motivational teacher. The classes are not only fun, but an intense workout! We work on drills, technique, choreography, and solos. The live drums really liven up the whole experience. The classes at the UC Davis campus are on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8. You don’t have to be a UC Davis student to take the classes, there are packages available for students and non-students. Try it… you will be hooked!

Yes, I am Brazilian. No, we are not born doing the Samba, especially if you happen to be from inland Brazil, away from all the exotic coastal excitement! So, after many years of faking it in America to save face,(who would really know the difference?), I finally broke down my Brazilian pride and joined Samba da Terra for good. Even putting on feathers for shows(my favorite part btw) and sweating buckets in the high energy, fun class at the Inspired Studios. Along with a great body eventually, samba dancers get the benefit of empowering their feminine side and a self esteem boost. The group is diverse and inclusive of shapes, age, lifestyles and fosters a community feel, doing benefits and fundraisers and special occasions. I was sold when we performed for the UCMED Mental Health social and everyone felt the Carnaval spirit! Uplifting! My Samba is getting better, I am looking forward to many more great experiences with the amazing ladies of Samba da Terra . Drum and Feathers soon at an event near you!
