Sterling Hotel

My wife and I were married here in Dec 2015.
First, we started planning the wedding just 3 months before. Time was an issue for us, and the ability to schedule all aspects of the wedding with one person was a huge plus. The packages they offer are simple, yet customizable. We were able to get everything we needed at a great price. Our wedding was small (in my opinion) with approx. 60 people. Everything went perfectly. As we lived 2 hours away, we only made one follow up meeting on location and all others were via telephone. Between walking the 3 main locations used (ceremony, cocktails and reception/​dinner) and discussing the overall plan of the event, it was easy to say yes to Sterling.
On the day of the event, we had a room at the hotel. Was perfect for the ‘guys’ to get ready, as the women had a special room for the wedding event, to prepare.
Everything was taken care of. From the ceremony, drinks, snacks, dinner, photography and general items of a wedding. All planned out and made the day as planned.
As the groom, I didn’t spend any time in the bar area, but it looked amazing. We had a 1 hour open bar, everyone said it was done very well and had no issues. With our smaller wedding, we had our ceremony in a smaller room. Was plenty of room for the 60 and went perfectly. A bit warm, but maybe that was me in the monkey suit.
The reception was in the ballroom. Was done very well. Looked amazing, food was great (Chicken, Mahi Mahi and beef carving station were our picks) and all the sides were made very well and tasty. As we were getting married, our appetizers were waiting for us after a long set of pictures, so a bit cold, but not exactly anyone’s fault. Its how I expected that part.
Our time slot was 5pm to 10pm. Time went very quickly. Up the elevator we went to our rooms. Many of us stayed at the hotel.
The room:
The bed was comfy, no squeaking or issues I have read in other reviews. I did leave the window open, and I can say for sure, the garbage trucks are near on Monday mornings. My fault. I never heard a sound from another room or the hallway. Very quiet. The jacuzzi is a full 2 person setup. Worked very well, hot water and filled quickly. A nice treat at the end of the day.
The room is a mix of old school and high tech. Its not perfect, the older look is just that… a bit of a older look. Yet a flat screen tv or jacuzzi around the corner. Great space in the room, chairs and table available. Iron board and iron a good plus. Well worth the price, and a huge step up (for the same price) from the Best Western.
Didn’t make it down for breakfast, but I was told it was a very nice selection. All was fresh and tasted great.
We will be back, maybe for our Anniversary.

Luckily I only read these Unilocal reviews AFTER checking in, or I might have missed what I find to be a totally delightful boutique hotel! My room is spacious, has an eclectic character & massive bathroom complete with jacuzzi tub!
The location is quite convenient, the staff was pleasant (& learned my name by the second day of my stay) and I greatly enjoy the charming Victorian feel. I can’t quite understand what some others have complained about.
If you want pristine everything, there are many local CHAIN hotels nearby, all of which I have stayed in during previous local visits. The beds there might be slightly more comfortable, though I had no problem with mine here, and I’m sure the bedspread will match the carpet (legitimately a gripe in another review of this hotel). Certainly you will FEEL like you are in a chain hotel in those locations… which has no appeal to me.
Honestly, I haven’t a single complaint about the Sterling. During my next trip to Sacramento, I will specifically request this location again, if possible. California drought be damned, I love having a jacuzzi in my room!

To date one star reviews account for less than 4% of my total reviews written and yet this one will easily go down as the worst. The story starts at 9:30 Friday night; by no means a unreasonable time to check into a hotel. I stroll up to the counter to find no one there and a sign stating that someone would return shortly. For a small boutique hotel with presumably only one person manning the controls, it doesn’t seem completely unreasonable that some could have needed to step away for a moment. A quick restroom break perhaps; someone needed help in their room; a stray dog running loose in the banquet room; maybe a Big Mac dressing spill on the slacks; who is to say. Where the story gets unreasonable is after multiple unanswered calls to every number available and 35 minutes later when the attendant finally walks in. He looked as though he had either been sleeping or was possibly high. When told of our 35 minute wait, we got… an apology? Maybe? No, that’s not it. We got a very nonchalant «I don’t doubt it» followed by «I was in the restroom and doing some stuff downstairs» as if that made it all completely acceptable. Not once was there ever any sort of apology or sign of empathy.
The fact that the font door is open and there was no attendant around for 35 minutes that I know of begs the question of how safe is this place. The fact that we were never asked for an ID or verification of a credit card further brings this into question. It did get apparently safer though as I found out after waking to the sound of someone pounding on the front door sometime later in the night. Presumably the doors are locked at some point and some guests couldn’t get in or reach the attentive attendant on duty.
As for the room itself, it was old and a little quirky as could be expected. Size wise it was great compared to most older boutique hotels I’ve stayed in. The room was also in fair condition and I would have no complaints regarding cleanliness. On the downside, you could hear all of the street noise from cars and people walking buy outside. Worst of all there was a very loud, unidentifiable noise that occurred about every ten to fifteen minutes or so that sounded almost as if you turned on your garbage disposal without any water running in it except louder.
This place is a definite no go for me and I would strongly urge anyone thinking of staying here to consider carefully.

Very big room. Interesting place. Very friendly, professional and helpful staff. I’d stay again, if the bedding/​bed were updated.
Not sure about the other rooms… but my room had really old pillows, mediocre sheets, and a mattress with springs that talk. The quilt and blankets were sad and completely unmatched with the cool carpet and updated bathroom. I wish whoever was in charge of decorating, would change the bedcover to match the room. Also, the way the bed is folded, isn’t exactly the most conducive to avoiding whatever was left on the throw pillows and bedcover, by numerous previous occupants.

We got married on October 3^rd! I would more than gladly suggest Wedgewood to other engaged couples because the planning process was easy, the staff was friendly and accommodating, the venue is gorgeous, the vendors are easy to work with, the food was delicious, and as a team, they made the day pretty seamless. My wedding day was absolutely beautiful and seemed perfect in the moment. We are truly thankful for a beautiful day and lifelong happy memories!

If you’re looking for a boutique hotel with a bed and breakfast feel, this is the place to stay. You also get a good value for what you pay.
The rooms are spacious with a historic Sacramento element that makes it fun when visiting the city. Location wise, it is close to the capital, walking distance to restaurants, and easy in and out driving access.
The hotel definitely has a warm family feel that makes you feel at ease.
Staff is also extremely friendly and helpful with whatever you need.

This was one of the worst hotels I’ve ever been to. We were a big party & had 3 different rooms in hotel .all of the rooms need major repairs. Restrooms are really old & disgusting. Sheets ware so cheap& dirty. Service was one of the worst I have ever seen. & complimentary breakfast was beyond awful. Don’t waste your money for this place. There are a lot more hotels in the same area

By all means, stay at the Sterling – just don’t plan an event there.
I have reserved my problems with Wedgewood to the Wedgewood Sterling Unilocal page – the innkeeping staff shouldn’t be lumped in with the dishonest Wedgewood staff.
Curtis, the innkeeper, went above and beyond to make my extended family comfortable the weekend we booked out the hotel. The facility is clean, comfortable, and gorgeous. You will notice a scuff or worn baseboard, but I was very pleased with the staff and all the other guests said the same.

1^st off parking is horrible & your car is not safe. You have to pay for parking. Rooms are stuffy & windows dont open.
As soon as we walked in our room fleas infested our socks biting our ankles.
The guy working the desk was extremely nice & accomodating.
Then in the morning when i went down to feed the parking meter i sat in my car for a cigarette. The gardener blew all kinds of debris on my car. I heard rocks, twigs & other things hitting my car. Then he sees me inside my car & proceeds to blow off my car probally further scratching my paint job.
Do not waist your money here. We even checked out at dawn because the fleas were causing us to experiance psycotic episodes. I would give this place 1 star but the guy working here was so very nice.

I would only recommend this place if you are looking for a big tub, otherwise, I’d go back to the Citizen! I had the same experience in the others in the Crocker Suite. The mattress was exposed at the end of the bed with a flat probably queen sheet, we didn’t have enough towels (they said their laundry wasn’t delivered that day), the cold water in the bathroom sink faucet didn’t work at all and was dripping, I used the cold tub water to brush my teeth, at first there was no hot water for the tub, but after a couple hours, I tried again and was almost too hot. The bed was not comfortable neither were the pillows in comparison to all other hotels I’ve been in recently ranging from a Hampton to a 5 star hotel. Being this hotel is not a chain, I’m sure it’s very expensive to run this place and keep it up and so I feel for the owners/​management, but considering the reviews, it sounds like they desperately need to step it up. It is not worth the rates considering what else you can get in Downtown Sac for less or the same.

We had no expectations when we chose this hotel. We flew into this town because of Spartan Race and it was my first visit ever to the capital city of CA. The town was gorgeous and to choose this hotel in the middle of the city can be a little more exciting.
It’s a Victorian mansion looking hotel with some complicated entrances on the side. So many doors! The front desk lady was very professional and our room was right beside the main lobby but it was very quiet. The room was clean and the best part was the deep jacuzzi tub! My lavender Epsom salt was useful.
They served breakfast pretty early in the morning and that worked for me even better. There were so many restaurants around and all walking-​distance.

We have stayed here before but it was over 10 years ago. It is still a beautiful hotel BUT it does need a little TLC, new carpet (it’s way past it’s prime), electric fireplace insert in the hole where the fireplace is, new travertine flooring or hard wood, and maybe once a month or so go through with paint and touch up some of the scuffs on the trim, base board and floor boards (interior). I love the hotel, it is just in need of a few things. The staff was very nice and friendly, very helpful.

This is my third time staying at the Sterling Hotel. I’ve tried to give this hotel a chance but it has clearly seen better days. The two stars are for how pretty the outside of the building is, the hot tub in the bathroom, and the fact that the staff was friendly. However, everything else was pretty bad. It’s obvious the management is terrible though you never see them. Rooms are filthy. No wifi! Hotel was largely unoccupied and creepy each time I stayed. I crawled into bed at 11 pm and pulled up the covers to find an exposed mattress. Whoever made the queen bed threw a full size non-​fitted sheet on top on the mattress and then called it a day. When I called the front desk I was told that they probably ran out of sheets so the cleaning staff must have «improvised.» Didn’t sleep so great that night. Next morning went down for some free breakfast and much of the fruit they put out was rotten. So gross! I loved this building but won’t be going back. Such a shame that the owners are doing such a poor job maintaining it.

I’m currently writing this review from the back breaking pull out bed in our room. Staying in the «Crocker suite» that has a ton of «charm».
I’ve been more comfortable sleeping in airplanes than I am on this bed.
The hotel is charming from the outside and immediately gets disgusting once you get inside. Under our bed we found bottle caps, candy, pens and paper, and a dirty sock!
The sink leaks, the floor is dirty, the toilet runs and there are chips in the tub. The only saving grace is the huge tub which my son enjoyed.
We had to ask the staff for clean sheets and enough towels and glasses to accommodate our party of four (there was enough for two)
We found street parking a few blocks away (14 @ E) but otherwise you’re sol.
For the amount of times we’ve had to contact the front desk since we’ve been here they have been strangely unsympathetic.
BEWARE the sterling hotel! You’d do better to book the nicest room in a cheaper hotel.
Honestly I’ve probably stayed in shabbier places but at least they were clean! And some good, extra mile kind of customer service goes a long way.
If I had payed I would have left without staying and asked for a refund, but it was booked by my parents. We still have one night left, so hopefully I’ll be able to update with a new perspective

Service is HORRIBLE! Be sure to sort reviews by date. Booked online, didn’t have the room I booked. No ability to correct (full). I ended up on a roll away, then they charged me for a late check out, after we called down and asked for a late check out. Follow up calls to the hotel had no affect. Buyer beware. You get better service at the seedy hotels a few blocks from here. Never again. Way overrated. Also there’s no parking unless you stay on a Saturday. It’s all 1 hour meter parking, if you can find a spot. Customer service is everything… so they get 1 star only because I can’t leave something lower. BEWARE!!!

Very beautiful and vintage. Great place to get married. We do lots of weddings here. They always love our flowers. Great staff!!!

The Sterling Hotel was fine but I am not thrilled with the service. I left my cell phone charger in my room and when I realized it, I called within an hour after checking out. Lauren, an employee, found it right away and put my name on it, said she would have the manager, Angela, send it in the mail. After a week I still hadn’t received it. I called a couple more times and finally got a hold of the manager. She said she didn’t know anything about it but would send it if she found it. Well, she sent me a cell phone charger two days later but it wasn’t my Apple charger. It works with my phone but it’s not my charger. I would have appreciated getting MY charger back and if they had lost it, misplaced it, or someone took it, I would rather they had been up front and told me then sending me some bogus replacement cell phone charger.

Good luck finding a nicer place for a great price. Service is excellent the rooms are awesome. We have stayed here a few rimes and have never had a bad stay. In room jacuuzi tubs are well worth it. We will be coming back.

This review is for their conference space only. I attended a two-​day conference that was hosted at this hotel. Their space is very clean and provided just the right amount of room for the seventy attendees. Their catering services were also very good and the food was pretty delicious.

This place is wonderful! I found it by chance trying to throw together some last minuet New Year’s plans with my boyfriend. From the outside it reminded me a little of The Haunted Mansion in Disneyland (but in a good way… lol). I was also fairly familiar with the surrounding areas. Up and down J Street is full of things to and see that are all well within walking distance. We ended up walking down to Old Town for New year’s Eve with ease.
The staff was incredibly nice and very helpful. There are a few options for parking: you can pay for valet ($ 12) or feed the meters (free after 6pm & on Sundays). We ended up opting to park on the street, passengers should be aware of the higher curbs.
I was surprised to find the inside of the hotel was not as Victorian looking as I expected, which was welcomed. Our room was a single king size bed on the second floor and it had a very contemporary feel. Not to mention, the bed was VERY comfy. We ended up having a third guest join us and the guy working was able to have a full sized roll away bed delivered to our room while we were out that night for an additional feel of $ 15. Our guest reported that she was surprised by how comfy the roll away actually was.
My favorite part was the very large and amazing jacuzzi tub!
