Yes it is local and friendly, and like a lot of businesses some of what they do is good and other things much less than that. My disappointment was having two new screen doors (which I brought in new prior to installation) to be screened. I asked for grey screen and got black. I asked for flat spline and got round. An I assumed that no one could be so dense as to screen over the middle horizontal flat stiffener (which has spline channel top and bottom to separate the upper from the lower screen section). Well, was wrong. The person who does the screening left a few brain cells home that day used one contentious piece of screen right over the center divider; and when I asked the Mgr about that he told me it was easier to replace the screen if there is tear later on??? Now that is professional a smoke blowing of the highest level. To make it better the screen was very loose and had jagged remains of screen sticking out of the spline. I wound up redoing the door myself, properly; and should have done that in the first place. So if it’s a screen job for your chicken coop go to ACE. If it’s you home and you want it to look good, don’t.

Ace is the place!
Ever since I swore off the Home Depot a few years back, I’ve tried my best to support local hardware stores. The majority of true local stores have been killed off by the big places, so I stopped in to Ace, which is owned by, and staffed by locals.
What an amazing difference in the level of friendliness and knowledge between a Home Depot and Ace. I was welcomed by three different people upon walking in, and was offered help a few different times, as opposed to the Orange Place where employees scurry away and hide.
This Ace offers up LOTS of great choices in terms of power and hand tools, yard tools, paints, fertilizers, and even pet supplies. I didn’t get a chance to check out the lumber selection, as I only went through a few areas, but I was thoroughly impressed with the amount of choices I had in terms of what I wanted to buy, in terms of price and quality. Obviously, the selection wasn’t as big as the other place, but definitely had what I was looking for, all at competitive prices.
What makes this place great, though, is the staff. It made me very happy to be welcomed into the store, and when I was looking through the tools, I had a staff member give me tips, pros and cons, and help me through choosing a certain tool I would need. The folks here know their stuff, and are willing to impart the knowledge onto you, so don’t be nervous if you’re not sure what you need or if you don’t know what you’re doing. Someone here will help you out and get you exactly what you need.
Definitely my go to hardware store in St. Augustine. Great selection, great prices, and knowledgeable friendly staff– my kind of store. Will not be shopping anywhere else in the near future.
