I use to love this place the gentleman taking the orders is friendly and I always talk to him when I come. But this weekend was unfortunately my last time that I will step into the establishment. First I overlooked a lot the customers and the mental patients that frequent the facility. it is sketchy at times, I sometimes scared that I will be robbed but the food always had me coming back. I know its crazy, you would consider being robbed for great food. I know I know But this weekend was the last straw. I overlooked the unsavory customers, I cant judge them but when a clearly crazy lady that smelled so foul came in with her very large breasts showing and her skirt coming so far up that if you were to look you may see the landfill between her legs all of this in front of my child. now that I had enough. I thought I might have to defend myself with a mystic bottle. lets carry on to the food. usually its hot fresh and tasty. I don’t know what I received the fried rice was a weird dark brown color and there was something white and stringy going through my food and no it was not bean sprouts. the crab ragoon tasted like pure C&H sugar. I could go on but why bother. Just don’t go there.

Considering I live in the neighborhood, I had a good idea of what I was getting myself into when I ordered from here. Yet, it held a few surprises for me. This is by far the most ghetto Chinese place we’ve ever ordered from(not a surprise). I was slightly turned off when I called them and they were somewhat unfriendly on the phone and in person. We were also bummed when we got home and found that there were no fortune cookies to accompanied dinner. But, the place has fairly good Chinese, and it’s cheap. We’re used to paying a little extra for Chinese Noodle Café or for House of Wong in Clayton, so we were pleasantly surprised by how much we got for the money. I’ve finally found a Chinese place that makes a decently spicy Kung Pow Chicken. The fact that this place is two minutes away might be enough to lure us back, despite the lackluster customer service.

Bottom line, I’ll be back. Great deals on Chinese combos in Skinker-DeBaliviere here — Robert is right, fill your belly with an entrée, fried rice, and crab rangoon for $ 6.00 or so. The owner seemed very friendly and knew a bunch of people that came in during our short wait for two combination platters. It was a comfortable place to sit, but I’d definitely bring it back to the house before beginning to nosh. I think there was a deal here — spend $ 10.00, get a free soda! Who can say no to that? Put this on your list. If you’ve ever been to Hon’s Wok in the Central West End, Chinese Express will strike you as pretty similar.

Great tasting, relatively authentic Chinese food with great prices and friendly service. I was able to get a full meal for about $ 6. The restaurant itself is a tad scuzzy, but I’ve found that scuzzy places are best for authentic Chinese food… and takeout is always a good option. I will definitely be going back.

If you are looking for great, cheap Chinese food, you have found the place. This establishment is full of Americanized Chinese food as well as your more traditional-style Chinese food. The portions are generous and the owners are very nice. If you want the best deal, you have to go with the combination plates. My personal favorite is #12: Beef and Pepper Steak Combo. It comes with a generous serving of beef and pepper steak with ham fried rice and your choice of an egg roll or two crab rangoons for $ 5.26. I am a decently sized person(6’1″) with a decently sized appetite, and I find that Chinese Express’s portions are just a little more than what makes me full. No worries, I always finish my plate for the sheer enjoyment of the taste, not to satisfy any hunger. The Hunan beef and Kung Pao chicken are more traditional and spicy, have some napkins handy when you order those dishes. Lots of people do carry-out, and you probably should too, because there are some interesting personalities there on occasion; though I’ve never felt threatened or in danger before.
