Gateway Transportation Center

St. Louis has an interesting past when it comes to bus and rail terminals. Compared to the retired buildings, a proud but faded former bank in the case of Greyhound and the «affectionately» named Amshacks that welcomed rail passengers, the Gateway Transportation Center is a modern, notable improvement.
The center’s amenities are on-​par with what you might expect to find in similar cities, including on-​site fast food options and a small store with light travel items and souvenirs. Greyhound WiFi is impressively quick and easy to log into, especially for a free option. Security is present and on patrol, but not overbearing.
Intercity transit is offered by Amtrak (routes: Illinois Service, Missouri River Runner, Texas Eagle), Megabus (to destinations: Chicago; Columbia, MO; Kansas City; Little Rock, AR; Dallas/​Fort Worth; and Memphis, currently) and Greyhound. It’s also exceptionally easy to connect to or from the terminal via St. Louis’ public transit. The Civic Center MetroLink light rail station and MetroBus Transit Center are effectively on-​site.
Function is the station’s strength.
It’s the form that leaves something to be desired. Whether it’s the buzz from the lighting, the alternating panes of clear and primary-​colored glass, or the fact that the building is literally wedged under a highway, there’s little travel glamour to be found here. As bus stops go, it’s better than many of the corners that Megabus is known to drop its passengers off on, and Greyhound stations are often somewhat plain. Amtrak passengers, however, can expect none of the sense of place or style that Chicago’s Union Station or Kirkwood’s Richardsonian Romanesque impart.

Slightly resembles a small bus station that happens to have trains running through it. The on-​site café has the basics and it’s easy to get around… would not want to be here after dark though, especially in back by the Metrolink, during the day was bad enough.

Center is ok but stay away from the Pizza Hut Express… staff was very rude, guy behind counter had attitude and was less than friendly.

Both Greyhound and Amtrak depart from this station; Megabus does NOT.
Anyhow, I’ve been here a dozen or so times over the last 4 years, for both Amtrak and Greyhound service. There’s a Pizza Hut and KFC mini-​restaurant of sorts, as well as bagel sandwiches, fruit, and the like. I’m not sure about Amtrak, but Greyhound does NOT staff its counter ²⁴⁄₇ so keep in mind that if you need counter service, for several hours each night it’ll be completely non-​existent.
I’ve been to hundreds (I think?!) of Greyhound stations over the years, even living on the Greyhound bus for 2 months once, and comparatively speaking, this centre gets an ⁹⁄₁₀ from me. Unlike many cities (even many major cities), STL has a transportation center wherein housekeeping is set to city standards, not Greyhound standards, since the city owns the station. This station, comparatively speaking, is VERY clean.
Maybe I’m missing them, but I have never seen lockers here, in the event you want to stowe your things and go somewhere.
There is a 24 hour 7 – 11 on 17^th and Pine, like 5 blocks away.
Power outlets are readily accessible in both, the main waiting area and the Greyhound waiting area.
There’s very little seating in the main waiting area, so if you’re waiting for someone to come in (whether bus or train, this is where you’ll wait unless you’re in your car), be prepared to stand.
Overall, ⁴⁄₅ for me.

I’m here to get on a train or off of a train going to and from Chicago for flights — haven’t had any issues, but also haven’t had any grand, memorable moments. It isn’t like I came to the train station to have a spa day. It is good for what it is. All aboard!

I have only used it for Amtrak arrivals/​departures. The staff is friendly and helpful, and it is clean and safe enough that I am comfortable with Teen and her friends using it for Amtrak. Due to the small circle drive in front of the station, you really have to end up parking if you are picking someone up and then moving into the circle when you spot them coming out. Parking is a little bit of an issue — there are an ample number of short-​term spots, but only one payment machine. The payment machine is fickle when it comes to credit cards, and this can create a pile-​up at the machine during train arrival times. Plan to arrive early enough to account for this, and spending a buck or two on parking to wait for the train to arrive. The good news is that I have always been able to park where I could easily see the train arrive, and know when to move into the pick up area.

Good hub. Horrible for anyone picking someone up via car though. There is enough room for 2.5 cars to fit in the waiting area, so they make you wait off property in a paid lot or on the street… metered. There’s no way to wait for someone without paying!!!

This transportation hub connecting Amtrak, Greyhound, and St. Louis’ metrolink and bus services is clean and modern. It’s got plenty of natural light and is easy to navigate. If you’re hungry you can add to the waistline with a visit to the Pizza Hut inside.

This station has been open for almost 4 years and so many times gets written up as Amtrak or Greyhound Stations, when actually it is a shared station owned by the city. Saint Louis finally is getting caught up with other major cities and has created a transportation center. It is a station shared by trains, buses and Metro. It makes it easy for travelers to make connections when using multiple types of mass transportation. They can come in from Springfield, IL on Amtrak, hop on Metro to the airport and get a plane to New York and beyond.
I commend the city of Saint Louis for finally creating this type of station. It is centrally located downtown, just across the street from Scottrade Center. The station is open 24 hours and has a security staff and management on duty at all times making it a safe environment for all travelers.
