Husband and I tried to stop by here this morning and it looks like it is all closed down. There were for lease signs in the windows and some windows were completely boarded up.

J. Spain’s is new restaurant concept occupying the northwest corner of 19th and Washington Ave. a little off of the beaten path away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Saint Louis. When I entered, I was greeted with gorgeous interior, not common to the chicken and waffle niche. Sleek wooden tables were organized well with some comfy booth seating lining the walls. I chose to forego the latter, posting myself up at the bar where I typically tend to seat myself as I grill the bartender on the history of the joint. Although there is a bar, the presence of alcohol and a bartender were void. I guess a beer to wash down my wings and waffles were out of the question. After a couple of minutes seated at the bar I was greeted by a warm smile and my order was collected. I left my the decision up to my server on what to serve me and this is how it went: Served up on one plate were six jumbo breaded wings resting on a blueberry waffle topped with strawberries and whipped salted butter. An over-easy egg sat perfectly fried on a seperate plate dressed with a sprig of parsley. They gave me two sides to which to dip my wings: Apricot Peach and Sweet and Spicy. The plump, juicy wings were some of the best I had ever had and one even squirted a little juice in my direction. The sweet and savory combination of the chicken and the sauces was quite exceptional with my favorite being the apricot peach highlighted by the bite of cilantro. Going back and forth between the waffles and the wings made for a enjoyable dining experience. This was my first run at chicken and waffles, and if there’s more inspired versions of this southern classic, count me in. So, folks, give me some more! Where the FORK do U go for chicken and waffles?

This restaurant is just getting it’s start, so some of the reviews I have read should take this into account. My wife and I went two nights ago to J Spain’s Waffles & Fries. We had been wanting to check it out for a while, but never got around to making it there. It is on the west end of Washington Ave — away from all of the businesses & restaurants on the east end of Washington Ave. The good thing is there is normally ample street parking in front and on the side of the building. The bad thing is it is located right next to a salon that smells horribly of pot. We both ordered the JWW chicken & waffles that they are known for. We were there around 6:30 and there was only one other large table seated at the time. It appeared there was only one waitress there, but others were coming in as we were seated. The waitress we had could not have been nicer. She was friendly and always checked in on us. The chicken was great — we really loved the sweet n spicy sauce. My wife had the original and ginger/asian sauce, and I chose the ginger/asian and sweet n spicy sauce. All was good, but we both agreed that we would get the full sweet n spicy next time. The waffle and eggs were great — complimented the chicken perfectly. I feel like this place maybe got a bad wrap in previous postings because they came in at the wrong time. I believe this business might get a lot of night traffic, but I may be wrong. This place could be as good as Sweetie Pie’s if they make sure that customer service is the most important thing of any business. We had great customer service, but it looks like some people did not. You could tell the food was fresh, so this does take longer and people need to take this into account. I really am hoping this place makes it. I know the BBQ place that was in this location before had great BBQ, but didn’t make it. I gave this place five stars because we received great food and service on our first visit. We will definitely be back.

There was several things wrong from jump coming here. Got there and waited for a table for about 5 minutes and there was only four tables seated. Only one waitress for the entire restaurant and it took her amost 10 minutes to even take drink orders. After orders were taken it took 35 minutes for our food to come out to us! I wasn’t impressed with the chicken and waffles that I ordered. I didn’t feel the chicken had a good flavor.

i got there a exactly 10 am… i thought it opened earlier. I was the only person in the place. Ordered the city waffle with six wings, and scrambled eggs with cheese… wings had a nice flavor(unlike that deep fried cardboard at HODAKS)…the waffle was okay, but they need to steal waffle houses recipe…

I must say, I was REALLY looking forward to trying J Spain’s Waffles & Wings. If there’s one thing I love, it’s the chicken & waffle combo. Unfortunately, this place didn’t knock my socks off. Don’t get me wrong — it’s GOOD, but it’s not great. The place itself is very spacious and clean. It’s located on Washington Ave, but not on the busy stretch. I kind of like that; it made finding parking really easy. The menu is varied; it reminds me of an IHOP in a way; they have typical breakfast items, but they also have a nice variety of lunch(and even dinner) selections. I saw a few vegetarian items, including an interesting sounding bulgur/quinoa veggie burger, so there’s that. I wasn’t feeling like chicken, so I went with the french toast instead. It was served with eggs and your choice of meat(bacon or sausage). I went with bacon, naturally! My mom ordered chicken strips and fries, which were tasty, especially with the spicy sweet BBQ sauce she ordered alongside it. We also ordered sweet potato puffs, cornbread, and macaroni and cheese to share. Everything was tasty, but nothing was hot, temperature-wise. Everything was lukewarm, which was really disappointing. I feel like the food would have been GREAT if it was served at the proper temperature. I ended with peach cobbler, which was disappointing. Again, it might have been great if it was hot. Service was super friendly, but a little slow, especially considering the fact that it wasn’t that crowded in the restaurant. I’ll attribute that to new business hiccups. The hours on the weekend can’t be beat; J Spain’s is open until 5am! This would be a fun place to stop by for a late night snack on the weekends. I’ll definitely be back to try the chicken and waffles. Hopefully the kinks are worked out by then. I have high hopes for this place… don’t let me down, J Spain!
