This is my go-to grocery store, and my favorite Save-a-Lot in the area. Sure, Save-a-Lot doesn’t have a whole lot, but what they do have is generally guaranteed to be cheap. I do most of my meat and carbs shopping between here and Shop n Save, and go to Schnucks or Shop n Save for the rest. Store is always clean, security/police(there’s a stubstation next to the store if I’m not mistaken) guy is hilarious, cordial, and respectful, checkout is quick, and prices are right.

The person who posted a few years ago has impossibly low standards if she finds the coffee at Save-a-Lot drinkable. Pretty much everything there is low quality. She compared it to ALDI, which she called, Aldi’s. ALDI has some second rate stuff too, but many of their private brands are first rate. If you do the majority of your shopping at Save-a-Lot, you will no doubt save money, but it will be at the expense of quality.

No longer can one doubt that this country is feeling a profound financial pinch, and many people are looking for ways to shave a few nickels off of their daily expenses. That being said, I am happy to post the first review of a truly unsung local resource… Save A Lot. My fiancée and I are childless and by no means spendthrifts, so our grocery bill-though lower than most-is one of our largest expenditures. I am a vegetarian, and the vast majority of my diet is fresh produce. While he isn’t picky, he happens to enjoy the dream diet of every 12 year old boy… pizza, chips, gummy worms, etc. Shopping at Save A Lot helps me to save a bundle on our bill, and gives me some leverage in the«real-food-is-too-expensive-so-I-will-live-on-Doritos-and-M&M’s» argument. Save A Lot is much like Aldi’s, minus the paying a quarter to push around a wobbly shopping cart, though I have found that a majority of the general groceries are cheaper here. Their produce section is small, but quite reasonably priced. Last afternoon I picked up good quality white grapes for $ 0.99 per lb., a 1 lb. shell of very nice strawberries for $ 2.50 and slicing tomatoes for $ 1.29 per lb. I am a coffee junkie, and I go through roughly a can per week, so I am always on the look out for a good deal. Save A Lot does not disappoint, with the standard 34.5 oz canister of off-label grounds for less than $ 5.00. While they do carry some name brand groceries, those tend to be just slightly less than you would find at Schnucks or Shop N Save. In most cases, I find the generic foodstuffs on the shelves to be comparable in quality, and 99 times out of 100 the slight difference is eclipsed by the disparate cost. Save A Lot has a fresh meat selection that is much smaller than the major grocers, but the price difference is astounding. From ground beef to pork roast to chicken breast, they carry the basics at a tremendous savings. Their breakfast/lunch meats span the $ 0.50 ham packets to shaved honey roasted turkey tubs. They carry cheap American cheese next to the Hautley sliced Swiss and Munster. Their freezer section is fairly standard, as is their dairy case. They carry both name brand and generic breads, inexpensive household goods and a very limited selection of personal products. Whether you complete your shopping in one fell swoop, or make a run to stock up on the staples, Save A Lot is a great place… and it helps to make $ 4.00 a gallon gas a bit easier to swallow.
