St. Louis Symphony

I haven’t been back since I was in high school orchestra but every time we went was so incredibly memorable. I think the first time I went was in 3 grade orchestra class and was blown away, which kept me playing for years to come. Powell hall is gorgeous and the seats are comfortable. Before the performances we would just look around at all the detailing. I really need to go back, I’m sure it’s still as amazing as I remember.

AMAZING!!! They are just an awesome sound to hear. Makes your heart skip a beat. It is so hard to give an authentic review for such a group when you can’t truly describe the emotion you feel when in their presence. It’s magnificent!!!

This is one of the country’s BEST orchestras. They play thoughtfully prepared programs in a gorgeous concert hall setting. No matter what kind if day I’ve had, a visit to the symphony always helps me regain a little of my humanity back at the end if it.
Sit back, close your eyes and be transported by the sounds enveloping you.
They offer two free tickets to active duty military per concert– something not many other orchestras do– and much appreciated!
If you do not take advantage of this, then well… not sure what to tell you. Go. Now.

Wonderful! Bugs Bunny at the Symphony II was performed for the delight of young & old. The flow of music, education and edification was smooth and kept everyone’s attention. Congratulations to conductor and members.

Love love love the STL Symphony. We are season ticket holders (4 years) and have enjoyed every performance. The architecture is beautiful and the music is mesmerizing. A++++

The St. Louis Symphony is simply amazing for not only the lovers of classical music, but for everyone. They have many different types of performances, ranging from classical performances to movies where the orchestra plays the soundtrack. Take a date or bring the whole family!

I’m a huge classical music lover and SLSO is top notch! Not only are their performances fantastic, but they secure talent from all over the country as featured guests (HELLO, YO-​YO MA!!!).
If you even like classical a little, I beg you to GO! Hearing it live is 1000 times better than hearing it through speakers. Not to mention, we need to bring the average age down a few decades! Don’t get me wrong, i“m no ageist but every time I go I see a real lack of a varied demographic representation. I will, admit though when I went to Mozart’s Requiem performance last year the amount of vintage Channel in that building was enough to make Coco herself proud. Wow, dem old ladies can dress!
Despite the place reeking of Channel, the symphony can be affordable. The beauty of the music is, that, you don’t need to SEE the stage. And you certainly don’t want to be seated close. Choose «nose bleeds» over the stage seats. Tickets start at $ 30 and for the more in demand shows, they may sell out. In addition, the SLSO plays various free shows throughout the year, so like their Facebook page to keep on the up and up from that front.
This makes for a great date night, in my opinion. Powell Hall is absolutely beautiful and during the evening shows everyone is dressed up. You can’t drink during the show (except at certain day and holiday shows) but they sell wine, beer and light snacks beforehand and at intermission.
Lastly, there lineup this season is SICK!!! So many great shows narrowing down the front runners this year will be difficult. I feel very lucky to have this problem, and to have SLSO in our fair city!!!

One of the reasons I was quite sad about leaving St. Louis last year was the SLSO. Some cities don’t even have an orchestra, let alone one this talented. If you have the chance, don’t miss out on watching one of the best in the country. And just as a side note, I’m in San Francisco for the next two months. I decided to buy a ticket for the symphony out here. Guess who’s conducting? None other than David Robertson… St. Louis is lucky, indeed.

I attended the All-​Mozart program last month and am still blown away by the breathtaking performance. The setting, the timeless music… it was an incredible display of musical richness. I look forward to coming back in December to enjoy the symphony’s much-​talked-​about Christmas program. On a business note, it is great to see the symphony back in the foray of popularity in the St. Louis area. It’s leadership is to be applauded.

I have to share with you my amazing experience at Powell Hall yesterday. I have been to the symphony many times and love it always. I went to see «The Pirates of the Caribbean» yesterday. The movie is played on a big screen and the orchestra played the musical score. What a fantastic performance! It was the coolest thing I have ever seen and heard. The best part: it brought a lot of people to see the symphony who may not have gone otherwise. It brought a lot of kids, families and young people. It was a huge crowd and they gave the orchestra a standing O! This is a fun way to experience a very talented group of musicians, if you would not otherwise go to the symphony. Bravo SLSO!

I’ve loved the St. Louis Symphony for a long time, but after my experience today I wanted to share my new-​found appreciation for their dedication to customer service.
Over the summer at one of the free outdoor movies on Art Hill, I won a voucher for a free concert at Powell Hall. I just called their ticket office to cash it in, fully expecting to be given the least expensive seats available. (And I wouldn’t have complained — I mean, come on, I get to go hear the symphony for free!)
So their ticketing agent totally surprised me this morning when he eagerly responded to my request, took the time to ask about my preferences, and gave me the best seats available for the performance. Talk about exceeding my expectations! I’m so proud that St. Louis is home to such a generous, community-​minded institution.

I used to sing with the Symphony Chorus, so I’m a bit biased.

The symphony is vintage St. Louis at it’s finest. We go to the holiday show every year, and it never disappoints. It’s a great place to bring your family and listen to some great music. The Powell Symphony Hall is a great place to listen to fine brass and woodwinds. It doesn’t matter your age — young, old, middle aged. Going to the symphony is cool.
A few notes:
1. They do offer booze, and during the holiday show you can carry it to your seat
2. Don’t be fooled, the front row isn’t always the best, unless you want to be looking up the whole time.
3. Parking can be a hassle. Free parking is available, but drop your wife/​girlfriend/​significant other at the door, becuase you will have to walk a ways.

Haven’t been in far too long. The beautiful red all over this hall is spectacular. The music is obviously great as the SLSO is world class, but this building is something that far too many St. Louisans just don’t know about.
They should. It’s beautiful and worth a trip in and of itself.

Some friends recently invited me to the «Krispy Kreme Koncert» which I guess is an annual event for the Symphony. There’s a 10:30am concert, which is preceded by coffee and donuts. Of course, this is a very geriatric event, but so are most symphony performances, let’s be honest :-)
Had a wonderful time in beautiful and historic Powell Hall, and heard Tchaikovsky’s 2^nd Piano Concerto live for the first time ever.
Donuts and classical music. Don’t know of a better way to start a Friday morning. Well, that I can Unilocal about. :0

We St. Louisans are our own worst critics sometimes… We’re constantly comparing ourselves to other cities and complaining that there’s not enough for young people and that St. Louis is only good for families.
Well guess what, St. Louis — you are WRONG! And the SLSO is one of the many cool attractions that keeps me here as a young person. Not sure if many of you knew this, but the Saint Louis Symphony is considered to be one of the best in the country (even better than Chicago — ha!) and our conductor, David Robertson, is world-​renowned.
Last night I had the pleasure of attending Doctor Atomic at Powell Hall and it was fantastic! I will admit that on most occasions, I’m not on the edge of my seat at a classical performance unless I’ve heard the pieces before. But Doctor Atomic was pretty damn entertaining. It was also short enough to keep this ADD girl listening, but long enough to make a night of it. And if you did get bored, just look up at all of the beautiful, turn of the century gilded wonder that is Powell Hall.
Also, it’s important to know that you can have cocktails before a concert and during intermission. And Powell serves champagne. Love me some bubbly… So if you wanted to go with a group, you could absolutely do happy hour before the show. If you would like to continue boozing it up after the concert concludes, there are a ton of great restaurants within walking distance, including Kota Wood Fire Grill, Jazz at the Bistro and it appears as if City Diner is opening another location around here too.
Bravo, SLSO! I will return…

I’m so thankful St. Louis has such a great symphony. Powell Hall is gorgeous, the orchestra is so talented, and David Robertson and Ward Stare are great conductors.
My favorite concert of the season is the Christmas concert. Nothing gets you in the holiday spirit more than that. Get there early to have your picture taken with Santa and be prepared for an audience sing-​a-​long at the end of the show.
I also love, love, love the free concert in Forest Park each September that kicks off the new symphony season. It’s a must see.

The Saint Louis Symphony is a grade-​A orchestra located in the heart of the Grand area in St. Louis city. If you’re a classical musical lover or have been looking to hit up a concert or two, definitely give the SLSO a try.
Of course, Powell Hall is spectacular (cheap beer!), but come for the music, not only the environment. David Robertson is world-​class and the musicianship is entirely and absolutely solid; the recent Orchestral Blockbusters concert, featuring Respighi’s «Pines of Rome,» was one of the most breathtaking performances I’ve ever had the pleasure of attending.
If you’re a student, visiting the
website allows you the opportunity to purchase $ 10 tickets for their «Orchestral Series» concerts. Definitely a great deal. Season tickets for students are also $ 55 for 6 concerts– wow!
Definitely check out the SLSO if you haven’t yet. It truly is a 6-​star establishment.

A wonderful experience!
We drove to St. Louis for the weekend to hear Michelle DeYoung perform William Carlos William’s poems. The symphony hall is gorgeous with beautiful walls, dazzling lighting, and great audience.
The production was flawless. So were the performances. David Robertson is a brilliant director. The oboe and tympani segments were outstanding.
Well worth the 5 hour drive from Chicago.
