The donuts here were great and the price was spot on. The guy at the counter was really helpful and attentive while we figured out what we wanted. Only thing was that the seating area looked like someone was living there with papers and personal items strewn about the couch and tables, so we opted to get our donuts to go. Also, we drove by twice as it wasn’t clearly marked outside.

If you can find this place, you’ll be in luck. Donut hunting tip #12 — Don’t let the bikes fool you!

Freshest, tenderest doughnuts I have ever had, seriously, and an incredible deal. I actually love that the shop looks like the cyclist hangout I imagine it is. I’ve only ever stopped in on my way to work so I don’t know how comfortable it would be to settle in for a while, but hope to try it one of these days. The guys who work the counter are efficient and polite.

I’m in love with the delicious donuts they make here. Every time I stop in it seems like there is a fresh batch coming out of the oven and they smell amazing! They have all the flavors you would think of like chocolate, powdered, jelly, cream, bear claws, maple bars, and a lot more. I usually go for the old fashion chocolate or cinnamon crumble when they have it. Coffee is just alright. it’s not like a cup you would get at a high quality coffee shop, but it definitely gets the job done when you have both a donut and coffee in hand. Good service and good donuts, what else can really ask for? Will be back here again and again.

I have been to a few different donut shops in the cities – Mojo Monkey(W. 7th Street, St. Paul), Donut Hole(Little Canada Road east of Rice Street), Maplewood Bakery(Frost west of White Bear Avenue). I had come across SugaRush when I was doing an online search for Twin Cities’ donut shops. One of the sites that had reviews gave me pause because of comments about how untidy the shop was. On 4÷29÷16 I happened to be running errands that took me to University Avenue so I decided to stop at SugaRush. I got there around 9:30 a.m. I was the only person in the place. On a wall there was a news article and photo about the shop. The person who waited on me was the owner(per the photo). Pleasant young man. I ordered a plain old-fashioned and a white-frosted old fashioned plus a small coffee. I was told that there wasn’t quite enough coffee to fill the cup so was asked if I wanted an «americano»(hot water added to coffee). I said that was fine. Usually when I stop someplace for coffee and goodies, I like to sit and read. However, upon surveying the surroundings, I made a decision not to do so. Other reviews of SugaRush have commented about how untidy the place is and nothing has changed. There was a tall counter along the front window. The accompanying stools were tipped upside down on top of the counter and the rest of the counter space was piled with junk. There were two couches forming an L. The front couch(close to the front window) had a huge plastic bag of clothing on one end and there was clothing strewn around the bag(looked like the clothes had fallen out of the bag). There was a young man(employee, friend?) who was sprawled out on the second couch. A coffee table in front of this couch had junk all over it. On the wall opposite the entrance there was a counter or shelving that was also loaded with junk. In the center of the shop were two tables with chairs and, surprisingly, the table tops were clear. But the general messiness of the place was so off-putting that I decided to take my goodies and leave. The plain old-fashioned was very good – nice and crunchy on the outside. The frosted donut was also good although I would have preferred chocolate frosting(which they apparently don’t do on the old-fashioneds). Will I go there again? Don’t know. From other reviews, this donut shop has apparently been around for about three years so there’s no excuse for the place to be this messy. I don’t get it – common sense would indicate to most business owners that having a tidy place is just good business practice. The garage where I take my car for service is tidier than than this place that prepares and serves food!

Probably the best donuts quality wise for their value. Their cheap compared to other donut shops and taste excellent. I’m a huge old fashioned donut guy and they have my favorites in all of the Twin Cities. The place isn’t the most well kept and appears dirty. But I’m coming in there for amazing donuts, and that’s what I get every time.

If you ask me — best donuts in the city. Over the last two weeks I’ve been several times to pick up a variety of donuts and doughnut holes for guests staying with us. Everything I’ve tried — raised glazed, cake, fritters, donut holes, chocolate frosted, etc — all excellent. I would recommend this place to anyone. Donuts were also very fresh — they clearly don’t use a bunch of artificial ingredients(a good thing!) because they go stale fairly quickly. Best eaten right away, as donuts should be. Note — It’s really messy inside. Not the kind of place you want to hang out in, just pick up your donuts and go.

Place is a dump. Walked in and the employee was laying down on the couch. Got up slowly and seamed to grunt that he had to work. Plus the coffee is awful!

Seeing as how this is basically the only donut specialty shop in St. Paul, I’m glad it tastes great! The café has a nice quiet atmosphere. The donuts were very good and I have definitely been craving the maple glazed raised since I tried it!

Great donut selection! I found this place after I discovered that Roseville Bakery had closed. Swung in mid-morning and there was still a good selection of donuts, and other baked goods. Street parking was a bonus.

Fresh donuts, engaging staff, and the best raised donuts I’ve ever eaten… and I don’t usually choose raised donuts! Totally worth the visit!

It was my first time here, picked it because it’s close by. The exterior is simple and little run down, but don’t let that stop you. Nice variety of your standard donuts — raised, cake, filled, etc. We grabbed a cake donut, bavarian cream filled donut, and glazed. The cream filled donut was average but the cake and glazed were awesome! Coffee was good. Interior is shabby, kind of reminds you of a studio apartment. Definitely a grab and go type of place. Definitely going back!

I LOVE SugaRush! This is my go to place for donuts, now. The risen yeasty ones are amazing, the cake are also delicious, and I haven’t had a variety that I didn’t like. The crullers are tops. The donuts cost a little bit more than some other donuts, but it’s definitely worth the price. My one complaint is that both times that I’ve ordered a dozen, they’ve kind of crammed the donuts into a box that was too small, so some of them got smooshed.

Really solid, no frills doughnuts. Bagged tea available, and the espresso is EXCELLENT. Not a ton of space to sit, but service was good and fast even with a line.

Great donuts but not a good place if you’re looking for a study spot. There are some seating options but no plugs for computers.

It’s National Donut Day, and though I placed an order for pick up later today at Cub(still my favorite budget donut option) I was secretly hoping a co-worker would bring some in this morning. When my manager walked in with 2 unsuspecting boxes from SugaRush, I was excited but since I hadn’t heard of the place, I wasn’t expecting anything impressive. I WASWRONG. These classic old-fashioned donuts have the perfect crispy outside and were still piping hot and melt-in-your-mouth delicious inside. The flavor was perfect, not overly sweet or glazed, and substantial without being heavy. Apparently its just a hole in the wall joint, but I am sure to be paying it a visit next time I am east of the river. Well done, St. Paul!

Who knew this little hole in the wall in Midway would produce such delicious donuts? I was scrambling for a last-minute treat to bring to my students on the last day of our brutally early 8:30 a.m. class, and forgot to plan ahead. Cue a frantic search for nearby donuts, and this little joint popped up on a Unilocal search! I was able to get in and out with two dozen donuts in under five minutes — and they were DELICIOUS. Hot and flaky and fresh and perfect. The maple-glazed and star-shaped donuts were my favorite. Wonderful selection. The shop is small and untidy and tucked away out of sight, but the product is great! I imagine I’ll be back again for future classes.

They might make the perfect donut. There is nothing fancy going on here. Take your bacon maple bismark and bourbon honey turmeric sugared rhubarb fritter or whatever and get out of here. I like funky as much as the next Unilocal foodie but sometimes you just want something familiar and delicious. SugaRush gets the basic donut so right… which other more adventurous donut places cannot seem to do. Too focused on shocking the palette to master the basics first I guess. Their cake donut is perfect. A slight crunch on the outside. Dense yet moist cake on the inside. The glazes are perfect. Sweet but not too sweet. I am never on this side of town but you can bet the next time my work demands I be in St. Paul super early I will be stopping here first. Oh, and they serve one solid and reasonably priced latte too.

I’ve been waiting for you, Suga. How did I not know there was a donut shop on Midway??? I found their adorable website by accident and decided to venture out in search of sweets. Believe me, if you blink, you will miss it. After I found my way in, the owner greeted me and began telling me the story of his little shop, and his ideas for the future. It was 11am, and the selection was sparse, he told me it was because all the regulars come in and snatch them away early in the AM, and he sends them to local coffee shops in the Twin cities. Guys — these donuts are LEGIT. Not like the kind from Cub or gas stations where you get that waxy-type feeling in your mouth afterwards. They are soft, not TOO sweet(again, like the kind mentioned above), and have a sort of je né sais quoi quality about them. SODELISH. I think the only thing that would make this place better is some real coffee. The kind they had was generic — but could you imagine the flavor explosion if you paired their donuts with Dogwood coffee? OMFG.

It seems appropriate that this is my highly monumental 200th review. Hold your applause. I likely wouldn’t have come across SugaRush if it weren’t for Unilocal. So there’s that. Mix in my extreme weakness to all things sugar and you have a perfect storm. SugaRush is a quiet, standard donut shop located in the Frogtown/Midway area of St. Paul. Private parking lot next door. Cozy enough to hang out in for a bit with wifi and a TV. The donuts are pretty normal. That’s not a bad thing. You’ve got your standards that you’d expect and not much outside of that. I tried an apple fritter and was very pleased with the amount of crunchy and gooey and appley and deliciousnessy. Also had a coconut flake chocolate frosted cake donut. Good chewiness from the cake donut while still being soft. So I had those two and an OJ. Ran me about $ 4. Good deal. Pretty safe to say that I’ll be making a return trip when I’m in the area.
