The bite has come a long way. It now has a brew fest along side. Would love to see more local restaurants participating in it.

For the first time, the Bite of Salem is not as disappointing as it used to be. The Bite is now the Bite and Brew, with a few local breweries having tents open(Gilgamesh, Mt. Angel, etc) and a few local restaurants as well. Still not as good as it could be, but definitely better than the fast good and Coors Light that it used to be.

I’m going to keep coming to this. Here’s why. One day the company that puts this together will understand that they *must* beg and beg and beg *local* business to come and display here. They need to get local business even if they have to give a discount. They need to say no thank you to Pizza hut and the Carnival food places. There should be a rule, they *must* have a store front and have their head quarters in Oregon. I will continue coming, I will continue leaving with every penny in my pocket until they get their act together. Bravo to the few restaurants that were there last year.

Naming this«the bite» is very misleading. Most of it is unrelated to food and is actually your typical carnival type thing with a bunch of rides and a music stage. What *is* related to food is pretty pathetic — an unexpectedly small number of food booths which are mostly national chains(Subway and such). The 2 or 3 local places that *were* represented were nothing special. You’ll find a far better(and cheaper) selection of local food at Salem’s Saturday and Wednesday markets; both run all summer long.

Bite of Fastfood is more like it. This is supposed to be an event to show off local restaurants in Salem. So what’s Pizza Hut and Subway doing here? They’re here because good ol’ City of Salem sets the price to have your restaurant be involved so high that no LOCAL business can really afford it. In addition to that, restaurants have to pay other ridiculous fees to other agencies just to buy their way into the event. What a waste, Salem. Of time, effort, and business’ money.
