I have been fairly self-sufficient with the technology that runs my cell phone but it was very, very nice to be able to talk to someone face-to-face and get help with settings that I was not allowed to access. I had been part of a family plan, but when my MIL tried to remove the account that my husband no longer used, mine got marked for deletion by mistake. She has always confused our two numbers. So we went to the Verizon store to try to straighten out the mess. Since my MIL is now the account manager, but has very little understanding of the whole cell phone technology thing, we were trying to do it from our end. We would need Mom’s permission to split my account off the rest. That would take a while to orchestrate, since we’d have to be physically present with Mom to get her to say the right things into the telephone. The guys at the Verizon store were very helpful and did what they could, but I think the Verizon database was telling them two different stories, depending on the direction from which they approached the database. After talking to a different person on a different day at the Verizon store, he looked up my account and told us that it seemed that it was going to stay in place after all. But a couple of days later, I opened my phone to use it and it was not working. Darn! This was on the day before I was scheduled to work at the polling place as an election inspector. As having a cell phone is very important on that day, I got down to the Verizon store and set up my own stand-alone cellular account PRONTO! So again, the Verizon store guys were there to explain my options. I had to get a new phone number because my account had been closed and deleted, but we no longer needed my MIL’s permission to split my account off the rest of the family. Maybe it’s better to be split off so that this type of confusion can never happen again. I’m sure Mom benefited from using up most of my 700 minutes, which were pooled with the rest of the family, so it’s her loss. I rarely use that much connect time, but now I have free unlimited texting on a basic phone plan that is $ 20/month plus the $ 5 base fee per household.
