English Skills Learning Center

An incredible program, making a positive impact in the community. The English Skills Learning Center commits itself to providing free English tutoring with trained instructors to immigrants, refugees, and asylum-​seekers. They specialize in practical reading, writing, and speaking skills. For students, they have emerging and intermediate programs, as well as classes that focus on parenting, citizenship and workplace English.
In April I attended the ESLC for training to become a ESL teacher. For $ 50 they provide a 2-​weekend training at their headquarters in South Salt Lake; complete with heart-​string jerking stories of their students, role playing real-​life scenarios, creating a lesson plan and a swanky orange tote bag. The staff and mentors are amazing and I completed the program feeling a lot of responsibility in my new teaching role, but well-​equipped and with an ample support system. They also encourage you to sit in on a class to get hands-​on experience.
The staff at ESLC opened my mind to what a impact confidence in language makes. From a parent who wants to ask questions their child’s parent-​teacher conferences, to an individual that wants a more fulfilling career.
