If you’re looking for an authentic Chinese place, this is it. Lately, hotpot is the most popular option but their spicy dishes and flavors most closely resemble ones you’d find Chinese places in bigger cities. Prices are decent and portions are large. Spicy chicken dry pot– Crunchy on the outside coated in a thick soy-based sauce with some veggies. A bit too salty. Spicy rib noodle soup– The soup was too salty and had a thicker than normal layer of chili oil floating at the top. Spicy cabbage– Pan fried cabbage with dried red peppers and chili oil. If you’re looking for a veggie only dish, you can’t go wrong with this one. Crispy tofu– The deep fried tofu is crunchy on the outside but soft and silky inside. It’s served with sautéed carrots, peas, and mushrooms. This one is not spicy and balanced out the other super spicy dishes. We also tried to order the shrimp and pork bun mentioned in other reviews but they no longer make it.

This is another Chinese restaurant that opened on this tiny busy strip mall, it is slightly different than the café next door that serves dim sum, since that is more of Cantonese style, while the Red House serves Chinese food from deep mainland regions. The space was just a single room with few tables, probably cannot fit a big party here. They have many smokers here that like to hangout near the front door, customers and staffs included, and it might an issue if you are not one. They have a regular menu with some bad translation and they have a secret menu with just Chinese in it, so only the ones that can read Chinese did most of the ordering. We started with some Pork & Chive Dumplings, it tasted on the bland side, they were handmade, and the dumpling skin was quite thick, despite poor handy work, I would still prefer them to the store bought ones. Chinese Hamburger was just a confused fusion dish, and I was not sure what happened during their thought process when they came up with that dish. Chongqing Fried Chicken was quite doughy, just by the color you can tell the breading was not quite right, and it tasted mushy too. Good thing the chicken was not pink… I guess? We added tofu in our Spicy Boiled Fish dish, and they used the watery type broth, the seasoning was just a bit off, probably on the lighter side in flavors. Cumin Lamb was a solid dish, balanced flavor with nicely cooked lamb. Other dishes like Pork Ribs, Crispy Tofu, and Sizzling Peppered Beef all seemed like hasty put together, and presentation was a bit messy. Especially in their pork belly, as the skin was a quite though, and probably need braised a bit longer. They did not have fountain drink here. Mediocre would be my description for Red House when compared to other restaurants in state. No mistake that they serve authentic Chinese food here, but they only remind me of the food I had in villages in China rather than the cities type, good enough to get by for a meal or two, not enough to call home about them. Service was just ok with the standard Asian poker face servers.

Decided to try here since it has 4 Unilocal stars. I ordered the pork and cabbage dumping which is the only one they said they were making today. They were very tasty. I also had the spicy beef noodle soup. Not a lot of flavor and it was not really hot. I also ordered hot tea which was very hot with Jasmin tea bag in a large stein like mug(I would have liked a refill, but it was not to happen). I came on a Sunday. I don’t know if they were short on help or if this was typical but getting my order taken and getting my food took longer than expected, like 45min. The waiter never came back to ask how my food was or anything. Also most all the condiment holders were empty of soy sauce and vinegar. Hopefully this was just an off day for them. I was very disappointed since they have such a high Unilocal rating.

I can’t say if they’re ‘authentic’ or not but they certainly aren’t your standard Americanized Chinese restaurant. If you want that style of food, step next door to Café Anh Hong. Seriously, they’re awesome and their General Tso’s is the best in SLC. I got the Chili Oil Beef(though I’m pretty sure I got chicken) and an order of pork dumplings to go. The chicken was super spicy but very flavorful. Never too hot to eat, just really enjoyably spicy. The dumplings are fresh and very tasty. Very happy with the food. My only minor gripe was that the front end people seemed a little confused and I didn’t get any kind of chili oil sauce for my dumplings. Also they asked if I wanted rice for the chicken. I guess some people just have prepared rice at home? Kind of odd, but not a deal breaker. I’ll definitely be back.

Best Kung Pao ever. This is the way it is supposed to be… Flavorful and spicy. Moo Shu chicken was also amazing… Tender and garlicky!!! Large portions, great prices. Will definitely come back next time in SLC! Well done! Highly recommended!

We had dinner here on 12/18/2015 and loved it. A dining companion ordered for us and we ended up with amazing food, but please forgive my memory on the name of the dishes as he did not order in English. We first had a braised pork belly with garlic sauce. The pork was tender and the sauce excellent. We were then served family style several of what was described as «dry pots» which were 2-quart sized metal bowls filled with a protein(fried fish, pork ribs, and tofu) along with potatoes, mushrooms, carrots, cabbage, chilies and dozens of mouth numbing peppercorns(apparently a key ingredient in Sichuan cuisine) Hands down this was the most amazing Chinese cuisine I’ve had in years. The food was certainly spicy, but accentuated the flavors a rather than demolishing them. The fish, a whitefish, was fried in batter but almost caramelized in sauce. The pork ribs, tiny little tender nuggets fell off the bone and were flavored well. The tofu, never my favorite, was also done well. We also ended up with another pork belly dish, done slightly different than the first, with mouth-melting fat and tender meat in a broth with veggies. Five stars as follows. One star for the hole-in-the-wall gem. (The location is a strip mall bordered by tattoo parlor and a check cashing place) One star for the elaborate menu in English and Chinese with great staff. One star for the fish, a fried whitefish(I tasted cod, but could be anything) which was crispy on the outside, but tender and moist on the inside. Two stars for the pork. We had three pork dishes not one better or worse than the other. All tender and flavorful. We will be back and will order the hot pot next time!

Chili intestine is great, while the beef is so so for a chinese eater. But you could add spice to the beef so it’s ok.

Went again. Kung Pao chicken this time… DUUUUUDE!!! THIS is how Kung Pao is supposed to be! HOT n Spicy but not so hot that it burned away the flavor. SOOOO good! But damn — still no dumplings. The waiter said they make them completely from scratch on site, and the guy that used to make em went back to Hong Kong so until they get somebody new…

I got a suggestion from my hotel while in town and I am happy I tried this place. Never thought Chinese food in SLC could be this tasty. Definitely spicy so if you don’t enjoy some heat in your food I’d be careful. I’ll be back when I get back into town.

I feel like the asian food scene in SLC is really stepping up lately! Glad I found this gem thanks to fellow Unilocalers and their very accurate reviews :) I went around 9pm on a Friday night. It was clear they had been really busy, because while 90% of the tables were unoccupied, none of them were bussed. There were only two waiters so they were stretched pretty thin. We waited a few minutes for a table to be cleared, then waited 10 minutes with nothing in front of us. When one of the waiters realized we hadn’t even seen a menu, he apologized profusely and gave us some menus. So definitely a rocky start — my companion really wanted to leave due to the lack of service, but I made him stay because I was eager to try the food! And we were both glad we did. Not only is the food great, the service ended up being great as well! As many fellow Unilocalers noted, the majority of the menu is in Chinese. I definitely feel like I missed out on a lot of good options, so next time I’ll try to bring someone Chinese with me :) The waiter was good at making recommendations despite the obvious language barrier. We went with the pork and shrimp dumplings, the pork belly noodles, and the spicy pork ribs. I can’t pick a favorite, because they’re all GREAT. This is definitely one of those places where I really want to try everything on the menu, but never end up ordering anything different because I stick to what I know is delicious. Lastly, kudos for having chili oil that is actually spicy. I can’t stand chili oil that has no taste and flavor, but this place does not fit that category. And the icing on the cake… it’s SO cheap!!! For two people, we left STUFFED and only paid $ 25 total. I also overheard a large group paying and commenting now cheap it was as well! I feel like I would have to consciously try very hard to spend a lot of money here. Great food, cheap prices, friendly service = five stars in my book. Move over Tosh’s… your neighbor might soon steal your spotlight :)
