Loved everything about this wonderful experience! A really great friend of mine,(romantic interest at one point) set this up for us, when I was visiting SLC in November 2015. It was the week of Thanksgiving, and the only night we could break away from our families and meet up. I’m so glad he took the initiative to do this. I loved the whole experience. There were two other couples in our cooking class party. Chef Freyka Nunez Del Prado was spectacular! She guided us in our«Mexican Favorites from Scratch,» cooking class. It was so well organized, we all had lots of hands on in the preparation of our meal! Freyka was not only knowledgable and gave us so much background on many of the key ingredients and preparation, but she also gave us helpful tips on basic things, such as how to properly use the entire blade of my knife while I was cutting up some of the ingredients for the red chili sauce. She was very engaging. We made Sopes(Savory Mexican Corn Cakes) with Chorizo and Cotija Cheese — and I have been craving them ever since this class. They were beyond savory and delicious! My man friend and I could not get enough of the Red Chile Salsa we made,…No joke! He kept going back to try it, and bringing me samples of it as well. We could’ve just made that and shared it with fresh tortilla chips and some margaritas! I will definitely be making that salsa soon! But wait, our menu consisted of more deliciousness! We made probably the best and most flavorful Pozole dish I’ve ever had — Chicken Pozole Verde,…Yummmmmyyyy! Last, but not least, we made something I’ve seen, had the chance to have, but have never had,…And I’m Mexican! These have never appealed to me, and especially when I think of the calories,…Well, I can honestly say, I highly doubt, I will ever have any that were this heavenly and delicious! We made Churro Fritters with Mexican Chocolate Sauce! Hot damnnn!(And yeah, I said«Hot damnnn!» a few times while I was having these there!) We couldn’t have had a better and more authentic Mexican dinner if we’d gone out to a Mexican Restaurant. I know it! Like I said, I’m Mexican, and I’m very particular when it comes to excellent Mexican Food as I grew up eating exceptional and authentic Mexican dishes. Chef Freyka and this cooking class at Sur La Table exceeded my expectations! I only wish I was in SLC more often, as I’d definitely take another class with Chef Freyka!

The cooking class was a serious disappointment! Do not waste your money on this subpar experience. My friends and I thought this would be a great«girls night out» activity. The class that sparked our interest was titled«date night» so we call and were informed the name was a marketing ploy and open to anyone. Imagine our surprise to arrive to the class only find a room full of couples. I was not offered a beverage unlike the other attendees. I had to ask for a beverage, only to have the snotty staff member act inconvenienced and annoyed. I tried to brush it off and enjoy the experience. We got to our cook station only to find that every couple was paired with another couple. Really? We each paid $ 70 per person and we were now dividing the duties between 4 of us! There was NO teaching or instruction offered and there was hardly enough to keep 2 participants busy, let alone the 4 of us. Not only was there not enough to do but our equipment did NOT work and we were missing or had to share the majority of utensils with other groups. Our group was eventually moved to stove to cook where we were directly in front of the oven and felt like we were in the way. The chef was unhelpful but friendly. The snotty staff member, previously mentioned, continued to make snide remarks and unfriendly looks throughout the evening. The recipes were good. However, we kept being told by the chef to prepare it to your taste, only to have the dish be combined with everyone else’s in the entire class! So much for my taste! It was also disappointing considering everyone else’s hands had touched food I was about to consume. Needless to say, I will not be returning to this overpriced class with rude staff, lack of «teaching,» and overly pushy marketing.

I took the Baking 101 class at Sur La Table last Saturday. It was my second time in the store and my first taking a class. The instructor, Chef Anthony was great. He was fun and energetic, had a great knowledge of baking and baking processes, and was an overall great instructor. We started off making a basic pizza dough(which we used for a great flatbread), then we made french banquettes, drop biscuits with onions and cheese, pecan cinnamon rolls, and ended the class with a brioche. I’m really glad I took the Baking 101 class(thanks Kimberly), and look forward to taking more classes from Chef Anthony. Before leaving Sur La Table I picked up a few items. I was impressed by the selection of the store and the knowledge of Chef Anthony, who helped me choose a few things. While the prices seemed a little expensive the 10% off coupon I received for taking the class helped make the prices a little more manageable. Happy baking!

Perfect place for a date with someone special… take a cooking class. It will cost you $ 75/each, but you get instruction from a chef on 3 courses, drink wine, espresso while you’re doing it… and use all these cooking gadgets. Guys… I’m telling you this is a SURETHING here! Check out Sur La Table if: A) You want to take a cooking class… again superb! B) You like to check out cook kitchen stuff(since I’m a Unilocaler I don’t really cook)…it’s counter intuitive. C) You want a free shot of espresso, as the Gateway on Memorial Day weekend can get.
