Commander’s House is a city parks & rec facility that is also on the National Registry of Historic Places. Therefore, it is surrounded by the new HEB they’re building on Main St.(Which means they can’t buy it out and change it. It must stay as is #Winning!) Enter through Flores and Whitley and make a left before getting to the HEB guard. Once inside this quaint two-story house welcomes adults and seniors(mainly seniors) with a host of activities throughout the week. Painting, pottery, guitar and other fun offerings are paired with scenic views of the architecture and the Tower of the Americas. Classes are about $ 15 per month which is a steal now-a-days. Tuesday through Thursday there is a fully catered lunch with two chefs on-site. The cost for lunch is a mere $ 3 and you should call ahead to reserve a spot. This works great for me since working downtown makes going out for lunch an expensive venture. I love my South Town restaurants but shelling out $ 10 or more for lunch is too much after a while. You must be a member to participate. Annual membership is $ 15 for adults and $ 7 for seniors but then you can participate in a lot of activities. I brought my mom with me and we had a nice time at lunch chatting with two other ladies at our table. There was a game of bingo afterwards but we spent the time upstairs at the accordion class. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon. It’s a great find among the busy bustling South Town/Downtown hubbub.
