Gold’s Gym

One of the most dirtiest and nastiest gym I have ever went too. The whole gym smells like Urine and dirty bathroom. I felt like throwing up after 15 minutes of my first day here. Many machines were broken down too. No sanitizing supplies for cardio equipment either.

Convenient location and yes it’s super crowded during specific hours such as after work during the week. I appreciate the Kid center as I am a single mom and yes the machines are a bit old but exercising isn’t about pretty machines and because of that I get everything I need from there. If you time it right you can get in and out. Gotta make the best out of your experience and it’s been good so far for the cost.

Gym is good… always crowded (but that’s s good thing from a business standpoint) and no one seems to wipe the machines after using them! If you don’t mind wiping every machine you use before and after and don’t mind your workout being a little longer than usual… then this is your gym

Decent gym, but usually crowded. Equipment is all in good shape, but no towel service.

Acceptable but nothing special. My wife and I signed up for a year long contract for our family, no towel service at this gym and you have to bring your own lock. We went through our full contract, did not try to cancel early, then two months out from the contract end date decided to turn in the paperwork to end auto debit and filed the additional paperwork to not continue the contract. They kept billing us though for three months even after repeated visits and phone calls. We ended up having to call corporate to get them to stop. They would not refund our money to our account on our card and are supposed to mail us a check. That was a week ago, I called again today and they said that I need to verify our address. I asked why they couldn’t just refund to our card that they had been charging and their response was that this was just policy. I verified our address asked for an ETA of a delivery time and they could not give me an answer. I will be following up with them again next week if I don’t receive the check in a week.

This gym definitely needs more equipment… And updated cardio machines (It’s kinda scary when the stair master is rusty). Lawrence is the best trainer there… And possibly in San Antonio… I would invest my money with him if I didn’t move away. Don’t waste your time and money with anyone else!

The layout is awful and it’s always OVERCROWDED plain and simple.

For a cheap and middle class gym it is cool. I prefer this location because it has a diverse crowd. Wish the music was just a little louder. I don’t like carrying my own music device during workouts. Terrible Wi-​Fi service. The best part is that this place is open ²⁴⁄₇ several days per week. That is very accommodating for those of us that work nights. Most of the front door staff are welcoming. If this location is a reasonable drive, I highly recommend you join. Besides, shouldn’t we all be going to the gym anyway, especially us foodie Unilocalers, lol. Hope to see you there!

Not very clean, its a fashion show to say the least, people doing things with machines and weights completely causing a scene. the employess dont bother to check on you. ive had my stuff stolen before while i was swimming. Canceling is a huge disaster. i havent even stepped foot in there since… oh but they make great shakes.

Don’t expect to workout here if you just moved to San Antonio from anywhere. I moved from Los Angeles and wanted to checkout the gym before I buy. The location’s «policy» requires you to have a local Texas license to receive a 7 guest pass. If you don’t the gym will try and charge you a daily pass. Not sure how this gym expects to bring in new members from out of state but I certainly losing out on customers. Not the way to run things

Pros: This is a large, two-​story Gold’s Gym with lots of machines and a fairly large free-​weight area.
Cons: This location gets very, very busy on weekday evenings. I have also noticed that the staff could be more cheerful and friendly.
As if a going to a gym full of body-​builders and ultra-​fit people isn’t intimidating enough, this location needs a tune-​up in customer service. I have had a mixed experiences here with some front desk employees being friendly and welcoming while others are either indifferent or downright unpleasant. Being an avid fitness freak (I workout in a gym between 5 to 6 days a week), I expect more from a club besides good workout facilities.
I would like to point out that this location has a large free weight area, lots of machines, and the entire upstairs area is full of treadmills, Stairmasters, elliptical trainers, and a punching bag and Jacob’s Ladder. Moreover, this facility has child care, an indoor swimming pool, a jacuzzi hot tub, a woman’s only fitness area, an aerobics classroom, a group cycle room, a full basketball court, and a family locker room. There is definitely a lot packed into this gym.
If you are planning to visit, make sure you go on a weekend or during «off hours» on a weekday, as the weekday evenings are very, very hectic. During the weekday evenings, it can be hard to be able to use a particular weight machine or Stairmaster without having to wait.

This location is decent. I am mostly here for the pool. This location lacks changing rooms (there is one, but it’s usually occupied), which is my main gripe. You have to change in bathroom stalls and that’s a pain. The pool area and the ladies locker room are usually clean. I like that there is a small ladies-​only workout area in the locker room. The pool is larger than the one at Prue and the one at Crossroads, thankfully. There are three regular lanes roped off, plus one slightly larger lane that lends itself for use by more than one person.

Does no one here wipe. off their equipment? Yuck!
Well, it’s a gym. There are gym things where the gym things go. There are showers and a pool and fitness classes. Unfortunately, there are a buttton of sweaty people who don’t know how to wipe off equipment, put back weights, not hog the popular weights and machines, and at times it’s hella crowded. But options are limited… I’d actually go somewhere else but it’s close, convenient, and the hours are good.
Hey management: please get on top of everyone! Make a couple of rounds around the floor and put back weights/​instruct people on proper use of equipment!

Could only do a week here just recently, decided to pay for the UTSA gym instead for the rest of the summer until my fall semester kicks in. It’s really packed. You’ll have a hard time finding open benches or machines during peak hours. The women’s area is small and hard to find weights to match, made it harder to stay motivated throughout a workout. I like that the UTSA gym has individual TVs on some of their treadmills unlike the ones here that are hanging and usually set on sports or their ads. Sometimes I felt the floor shaking on the 2^nd floor when there was a lot of treadmills in use which was distracting. Cannot comment on the pool or classes since I did not try those out.

My working out time at Gold’s Gym was ok — machines were frequently broken, but it was a no-​frills type of gym. That was okay with me. My problems with the gym is when you actually have to CANCEL. In my case, I was relocating out of SA to Houston and the nearest gym was a 40 minute drive from me.
I called a MONTH before I left to check out the cancellation process — I was told there would be no fees/​charges for relocation cancellation as long as I could provide proof of address change. Sounds easy right?
I went in on April 29^th to officially cancel in person. I had proof of my address change on my smartphone, but they wanted a physical copy. I asked if I could email it to them and they said that would be fine however ‘it is very difficult to cancel over email, you need to email it like multiple times because the man who checks his email can’t read all of them’. I thought that was very shady, but again I was reassured that there was no cancellation fees/​further charges.
Lo and behold, I got charged again a week later during their bi-​weekly pay period. I called and spoke to a lady who said the ‘processing of my cancellation did not take place in time’ so I had to be charged. I was like fine, and let it go.
Then on May 18^th, I got charged AGAIN. Absolutely livid, I called to complain and demand some kind of solution, but ‘no sales reps are present, call back later’.
I called the gym 5 times in a week. NO sales rep/​manager to be found or available and no messages taken. I emailed the GM, who said he would contact me the next day. I waited THREE days and then emailed and called the gym. Still no response. I had to call AGAIN that same day to finally snag the manager. Why did it take so many attempts on MY part to resolve this problem?
The management of this gym needs so much work. The GM compared my frustration of being charged multiple times to his frustration of not being able to get dinner reservations. What the heck? Is this some sort of empathy technique? And I did NOT get refunded on either of the two charges, despite the fact that I had called a month in advance to see if there was any action on my part that I needed to do for cancellation and being reassured that there wasn’t anything besides just coming in. They charged me an additional month’s worth of gym membership despite the fact that I was blatantly told by two different employees on two different occasions that I would not be charged at all and that the cancellation process involved nothing on my part. How foolishly naïve I was to trust them.
Just a warning for all of y’all — easy to sign up, hell to get out of. Extremely inconsistent and irresponsible corporation. No sense of professionalism. I am extremely dissatisfied and frankly disgusted by their practices. Good luck trying to contact them or even get any straight information out of them. You can’t even find a number for their corporate office that easily. If you have a complaint about a gym, you are told to contact that gym. Well what happens when that gym doesn’t care? Don’t be fooled like I was — might be convenient for awhile, but that convenience stops once your money is needlessly taken.

I’m not a member of Gold’s Gym anymore (I know, tsk tsk). But when I was a member, this was the Gold’s Gym I went to. It’s right next to my house in walking distance and open ²⁴⁄₇ so it’s very convenient for anybodys schedule.
Pros:
1. They have a child care center. This is great if you have older kids. But in my opinion, it’s not too good for a baby or a toddler, it’s really more aimed towards older kids that are already in school. A majority of the time, I’ve noticed they have the kids color pictures, do crafts or watch TV, which is fine, but not when you have a baby. They have a rule there: if your child cries for more than 10 minutes, you have to come get them and settle them down, otherwise they have to leave. I tried multiple times to leave my son here and all of the times he would scream so they’d have to interrupt me in yoga. Not a big deal in any way, shape or form, but the child care center definitely didn’t work good for me.
2. They’re open ²⁴⁄₇. If the only time you can come and work here is in the middle of the night, you’re in luck, because they are OPEN! You can get here first thing in the morning before work or you can get here late at night when everyone else is in bed. Perferably, the best times to go in my opinion, NO people makes it easier to work out, I enjoy it more!
3. There’s a «woman’s only» gym, I rarely used this because it’s so small and the best machines are usually taken. It’s great for women who would prefer to work out without a bunch of people around, can make you feel a lot more comfortable if you’re uncomfortable working out to begin with.
4. They have a variety of classes to choose from and every month they change the date/​time, which is great because it can be difficult to make a certain class and certain times so at least you can have variety. The classes are large and the instructors genuinely enjoy their jobs which makes it more enjoyable for people who attend the class.
5. Canceling my contract was fairly easy. I just had to fill out a form and I didn’t have any hassle from the workers to continue my contract which was definitely nice!
Cons:
1. Personal training is a pain. Since we joined we were able to get a free session with a personal trainer. The trainer was great and it really helped us get a good workout but they’re really forceful about continuing to have a trainer throughout your contract with Gold’s. Trust me, I’d jump on the personal trainer bandwagon if it didn’t cost so much (cost us about $ 200 for six 30-​minute sessions, way too expensive).
2. This place is ALWAYS packed except for first thing in the morning or last thing at night. I can’t stand how many people are always here. Sometimes a lot of the good machines are taken or you have to go on a machine you don’t really want to and keep checking the machine you WANT to see if you can can steal it before someone else does. With how big of a facility this is and how many machines there are, it’s seriously ridiculous how many people go here. And the worst times to go are in the evening after work (after 4PM onwards).
3. Machines are nice and a lot of them are updated but a majority of them don’t work if you connect your headphones to listen to the radio and/​or listen to the TV’s (they have four big screen TV’s that you can watch) and listen to if you get a good machine! That can definitely be disappointing but if you go there enough you’ll know the machines that work versus the ones that don’t!

This is my gym of choice. The staff is always friendly when I walk in the door and they really do a great job of keeping things clean which is important to combat the dreaded staph virus. I love the fact they have a pool. It’s nice change of pace if I don’t feel like running or lifting weights. Really my only qualm was the squat rack area. It’s a little crowded and there are only a few machines. Granted I understand typically the squat is something most people don’t do. It’d be nice to see another rack to help alleviate the eventual log jam at these stations. Other than that the peeps at Golds Gym are doing a great job!

Great classes here

I’m conflicted by this Gold’s Gym.
They have a small women’s room with a few TV’s, which is nice. I also like their women’s locker room just fine. Their cardio equipment is on the second floor, which is also nice.
However, and this is a big however, whoever decided to put a basketball court next to and a dance/​body pump/​step/​cardio studio BELOW a yoga studio needs to be fired. I love my yoga, and the relaxation time at the end is amazing. However, it is not possible to have that at this gym. The entire time you are doing yoga (if there are bball players and/​or another class below you), it is awful. The music and bass from the cardio studio and the yelling and slamming of the basketball from the court is deafening and the opposite of relaxing.
Gold’s: put some freaking insulation in that room or something to make it better!

I just added this location for Gold’s Gym. Can’t believe no one has ever reviewed it!
I use mostly the swimming pool and I never had any trouble finding a swimming lane… is VERY clean and well maintained and seems a lot bigger than the other Gold’s at Babcock & Callaghan close to 410.
The cardio area upstairs is really big and most of the treadmill/​cycling machines do actually work. They have LCD screens all around and the high ceilings and huge outside windows just make it feel bigger than it is.
I just love this place. Staff is also very friendly, Lilian has been very helpful and I’d recommend asking for Anthony for any personal training classes! he really knows what he’s doing!
