Do not use the Shag for dreads. Go to Austin if you must. Three years later, I am still finding out what a bad job the stylists at the Shag did, even though they charged me a month’s rent. They used wax that has destroyed my hair from the inside out. Real dread artists know not to use wax, because it is impossible to get out and will destroy your hair. My dreads are also very lumpy because they were installed incorrectly. On top of this, I remember the stylists were complaining about how much work it was while installing my dreads, making my experience less than enjoyable. If you want dreads, go somewhere where they know what they are doing.

Last year I decided that I want to dread my hair .I did my research and found that their were only a handful of places in san antonio that I could find through internet search that offer dread install this was one of the I came in for a consultation told them want I wanted .and I was given a very expensive quote. After a few days of researching and thinking it through(I did like the picture of the people who previously got dreads installed at shag) I decided to go with them. That in turn would be a big mistake on my part. The end result was that my dreads were poorly installed. They rushed the job they didn’t backcombed my dreads all the way and now it looks like the top part of my head is dreaded while the bottom end of my hair looks like normal hair. They really did rush the job. And not only that that I specified that I wanted to have thick fat dreads installed and I got just the opposite I got flimsy tiny dreads that hardly even resemble was just overall a piss poor job done not to mention getting ripped off even the other salon I went to to get maintenance done said I got ripped off by these people. I know this is just one aspect of their business but think about it if I can receive such poor service at incredibly high prices than it can happen to you to.

I’ve always been a bit apprehensive about salons but they are awesome! They take the time to do the cut right and make sure you like it. They have a really nice staff and make sure that you have an enjoyable experience. I don’t become a regular to many places, but I won’t get my haircut anywhere else.

I have always been apprehensive about going to get my hair cut by hairstylists, as I had been jaded by a bad experience I once had at a salon. My brother suggested that I try The Shag and since I really liked the hairstyle he was given there I said, «What the heck.» I’m not going to lie to you when I first went there I was a bit nervous, it seemed very high-end and my insecurities got the best of me. However, when I went inside it was so ultra-laid back and everybody there treated me like they had known me all their life. I got my hair cut by Kayla who is super-talented, friendly and knowledgeable. Even when she used her salon-speak, and since I am not versed in the lingo, she broke it down to the most simplest terms. But more importantly she listens to you and offers suggestions. If you are fixing to revamp your look or trying to find a new style try The Shag. They are beyond awesome!~ Shag Super-Fan…

Good luck to shag in their big move to North Star mall! I’ve had my hair done a few times here and have always been pleased!

I really like this place. The owners(Keith and David) are great with customer service and with their cuts.

I have been going to Shag since 2005, and I too have recommended the salon to a lot of friends. The atmosphere is great and I always get offered a refreshment. I’ve always had decent haircuts, though occasionally I still leave with split ends, and I have always had a nice new hair color when I leave too. Some of my friends like the salon and others thought it was ok. Shag is relatively inexpensive in comparison with other local salons, so I would say in this case the old saying is true-you get what you pay for.

I was a loyal customer for years and recommended the place to everyone. Then one day the owner gave me one of the worst haircuts of my life. Okay, mistakes happen and hair grows out but when I suggested(while still at the salon) that he try to correct it, he sent me home and told me to «see how it works after a few days». I immediately called to tell him how disappointed I was but no apology or refund was offered. I’ve since spoken with others who have reported the same experience. Sad, ‘cuz he’s a nice guy and it’s a fun space.
