My husband and I recently joined Shaolin Do West and have found it to be a perfect fit for what we wanted in a school, both for the Kung Fu and Tai Chi classes. Even when there is a full class or a spread in experience among people in the class we receive a great deal of personal attention from Sifu Rick and the other instructors. It is a very supportive environment that still treats you as an independent adult and encourages you to push yourself to new levels of physical fitness and skill in whatever form you are working to learn at the moment. The sense of welcome among the existing students and positive environment also make it a place we look forward to going several times a week. If you like a very structured program, the progression for the belts and levels is well laid out and there is a lot of history and background of the styles worked into the classes. The instructors are also open to questions and are great about discussing and demonstrating practical applications of the katas and forms you learn at each level. While we do not have any children ourselves, we have also been impressed by what we have seen of the children classes and the instructors’ ability to move from teaching the children to teaching the adult classes. The school offers regular classes in both Kung Fu and Tai Chi, spread over both evenings, afternoons, and weekends, which has made it easy to fit in our schedule. It has also been incredibly affordable and the school is very transparent about where the costs exist for both monthly fees, testing costs, and equipment. We look forward to progressing into the weapon katas and more advanced forms and would highly recommend this school for anyone looking to increase their physical fitness, work on their health and general well being, or just learn something new!
