Speedy’s Chicken

Before any of those other chicken places showed their legs and wings on the southside there was an is SPEEDYS. If you want a truly delicious big crispy chicken don’t go anywhere else but here, TRUST ME… oh did I not mention their awesome chicken livers and chick strips… a must visit place.

I don’t like the chicken from Speedy’s as much as I like the chicken from Bush’s, Bill Miller’s, KFC, Popeye’s or Church’s. The strips are okay but not as good as the ones from Bush’s but better than Church’s and Whataburger. The fries are average and the rolls are tiny. I prefer Bush’s rolls over Speedy’s. The only thing Speedy’s comes correct in is their gargantuan 32 oz. sweet tea, which tastes what sweet tea should taste like instead of Bill Miller’s tea flavored sugar water. There’s a difference believe me. They are weird about their ketchup though. Instead of having bottles of it at your table you have to go up front and ask them to bring you a bottle that they get from the back.

Yes Yes and Yes! Is the fried chicken delicious? Is it reasonably priced? would I go back?
i usually look for the reviews of places I’d like to eat at in the Sunday paper, so that is how I found out about Speedys. We’ve been there twice (it’s super far from our home) and we’ve really enjoyed it. it’s fresh and really delicious. the tea… watch out! Suuuuper sweet, the way I like it! Too bad we live so far, or maybe it’s a good thing or my arteries would be chugging with grease by now!

After figuring out the closest Bush’s Chicken was 14 miles away, I decided to give this place a shot… good call, Matt!
While this place only speedy in namesake alone, the chicken (strips) were fantastic, the breadiing is seasoned nicely, the sweet tea is southern sweet (i.e. fantastic), and the side I had (fried okra) was tasty (albeit slightly overcooked or just the frozen type).
This is now my «go-​to» spot when I’m on SW Military drive and have a hankering for good chicken. Plus, it’s locally owners, so I get to support local business.
The good:
+ tasty everything so far
+ has a drive through
+ close-​ish TAMUSA campus
The not-​so-​good:
— order was slow to be delivered
— kind of hard to see/​find if you are driving by (next to a Subway)
— fried okra could use some work (getting mashed potatoes next time)

Hubby and I were looking for a picnic meal to take to the park by Mission San Jose. We asked someone if they could recommend anything and no one was able to give us any recommendations. Hubby quickly pulled up Unilocal and found Speedy’s Chicken. We went there and ordered chicken and rolls and fries and cole slaw. The chicken was very good and we were glad we found it.

I was inbetween 4 and 5 stars but decided to go ahead with 5. It really doesn’t get any better than this for fast food fried chicken. The chicken fingers are amazing and the gravy is ridiculously good. I ordered a 6 finger combo which was huge.
Even though I knew that much food was going to hurt my stomach I ate them all anyway. And the fries and the roll. I was about to take down the rest of my gravy like a shooter when my wife pulled me back from the ledge and took me home where I spent half the night with stomach pains from overeating and the other half making plans to return and do it again.

this is my favorite place to go for chicken tenders. Great flavor and good portions. Very reasonable price. May be a bit simple but they do it the best. Did I mention the Sweet Tea for 50¢. This place is great.

I’m not sure why the other person said it gets hot. It actually gets pretty cold in there they usually have the A/​C running all day. Me and my boyfriend love going here even after we moved all the way to the north side. It’s well worth the travel. Their chicken strips are to die for. It’s like heaven in your mouth. Their rolls are pretty good too. The gravy is awesome as well the mashed potatoes. I love their macaroni and cheese, but thats probably because i’m addicted to macaroni lol :). I have had their onion rings and i thought they were all right but I tend to be pretty picky with my onion rings. And on to the tea the tea is sweet just the way i like it :) I was told once they dont use sugar they use honey to sweeten it and i really like honey in my tea :)
So bottom line is you should really try this place out :)

this place is dam good i have to say its alot better then bill millers the only thing i say they need is dessert other then that the tea is probably the next best thing next to the chicken and i mean best, better then the millers good little place

Small local or one-​off places are pretty much the only way to go on the south side if you’re looking for great food, and Speedy’s Chicken is one of the places that proves just that.
First, the actual food is really good — not the best fried chicken I’ve ever had, but it definitely made me happy, and I’d come back just based on that. The ‘menu’ consists of chicken and… sides you can have with chicken (mashed potatoes, *really* good bread buns, etc.), but honestly that’s all you’d come for so it’s makes it simple to make order decisions. As far as drinks are concerned, your only real choice is *VERY* sweet tea, but it’s oh so caloric and amazingly good. Order to-​go and you can get it in gallon jugs (they aren’t cold when you get the jug, at least ours wasn’t, so plan accordingly).
Second, the actual dining/​ordering area is small, very hot in the summer due to a lack of running A/​C and quite industrial, but that all adds to the eclectic appeal. Also, the lunch rush produces an amazing line inside and a distinct lack of parking spaces outside, so be aware.
Overall, if you don’t know what to do for lunch one day and you’re nearby, it’s worth a try.
