The Lion & Rose at Alamo Heights

Came here for Father’s Day recently and we were able to find seats at the bar. They had Fuller’s London Pride on Cask, which is very hard to find… I’ve personally only had this beer on cask in England. The waitress was really nice here and super helpful.
As for food, we ordered the Guinness dip & chips, a scotch egg, and the Shepherd’s pie. All of it was really good. I really like the way they make their «chips» aka french fries. They are like little potato slices. The cheese dip was also very good. The scotch egg was cooked perfectly and so was the Shepherd’s pie.
I know there may be some bad ratings of this place, but I received great customer service, food, and beer and will definitely be coming back.

Hadn’t been in it for a while because of the smoke, but when everything had changed and it was no longer a smoking place I decided to give it another shot. OMG!!! The food was great! I had the best fish and chips I have had in a very long time. My wife had the tuna and cannot stop talking about it. It is really a great place to go now and I would encourage everyone to give it a shot. The prices were very reasonable and the wait staff are attentive.

The only thing that seperated this overpriced pub was that u could smoke inside. For some reason the owners decided to make it nonsmoking now. Idiots.

So first let me start off by saying I came in on a Tuesday around 7pm. The establishment is very nice and clean inside, however it was relatively empty even though it was trivia night. Our server was Rebecca and I must say she was pretty darn good. I ordered the herbal salmon and it was pretty tasty with a sizable portion.
I’m pretty sure this is probably the place to be Thursday– Friday

No more smoking!
The Lion and Rose has always been an «okay» place — service can be iffy and the food is never great but a few things are generally decent (i.e fish and chips) but we enjoyed the true pub atmosphere and character of the place more than anything, including the smoke. Yes, smoking is horrible, we all know, but it was part of that pub feel, along with the décor, the dartboards, etc. People enjoyed having a place to do all that. Maybe they think business will pick up now that they’ve eliminated smoking but, considering a few of their non-​smoking locations closed, I don’t think it will make a difference. For non-​smoking bars and pubs, there are better places closer, so we won’t be making that drive across town anymore. Thanks for the good times!

Love getting hair done by the EXPERIENCED (15+ years), talented, and down to earth Lori Cole. My boss told me about this place and after seeing Lori’s work on her hair (love the way she blends color those of you looking for a good balayage!), I was convinced!

Found a fly in my beer. Smelled horrible in restaurant. Staff was not helpful at all and no one was around when we needed it. When we told the waitress about the fly, she said «sorry these things do happen.»

Celli is the best server ever. Came in on a Friday at 3pm with an old buddy from college. We had a great time. Had the fish and chips and a few drinks. Yes, there were people smoking cigars, but this is America. Remember that. Celli, thank you for the amazing service and we will be back soon. Bonus: the fish and chips lunch plate also came with a small soup. It was great!

Food was VERY salty which is dissapointing. Also there was an incredible amount of smoke from cigars which is disgusting.

Decent pub. I can’t handle the intense smell of smoke in the place. If that’s something you’re ok with and you feel like going to an English style pub I’d say it’s pretty good.

This place is great! I’ve been to many of their locations and I always find the best service. Tonight I indulged in their special of prawns and chips. It sounded good but honestly the batter is weird. Our waiter though, Jeremy, was awesome! Attentive when he needed to be, and not over bearing. This guy really knows his customers. My husband even commented I wanted to take this guy home. I do, cause he comes by at just the right time to ask me what I need next! The service here is top bar and the staff really is great. Just ask for descriptions to how things are cooked before you order so you aren’t weirded out like I was lol.

I have been going to The Lion and the Rose for many years and have had several experiences. I am not sure why but my service has always been lackluster. I keep coming back to the location because I love the food and the beer. The chips and petals are my favorite on the menu for an appetizer and I have to get it every time I am there. I also have enjoyed the scotch eggs. The food has always been on point and the reason to keep me coming back.
Normally we go for the Spurs games which I know means a wait and slower service. I have grown up in the service industry and do not have unrealistic expectations. I am always reasonable even with new waitresses but its hard to keep coming back knowing the service hasn’t gotten better.
Multiple times our waitress messed up our order of Black and tans bringing us multiple drinks, letting us have them «on the house,» then charging us for them. I have no problem paying for an accident like this and offered multiple times to pay but she reiterated that it was on the house. Once our check came, surprise! they were on there. I confronted her by pointing them out and she accused me of trying not to pay for the drinks/​stealing from the restaurant. We ended up paying and moving on because the drama was not worth it.
Maybe I will come back but who knows this might have been the last straw.

I’ve been going to this L&R before they built the other locations around town. Through the years I’ve ridden on the roller coaster of service quality, but after my last visit I have decided enough is enough and will not be coming back which is a shame because I like the beer, food, and ability to smoke inside. (The reason for 2 stars instead of 1)
My last visit was June 27^th and I entered the pub at 11:30 pm. The place was not busy and probably had 14 other patrons. Our waitress Sage notified us that she was in training, but with her lack of attentiveness and excuses for her poor service, she should probably look for another job.
During my 2 hours there I had to remind her to bring a water (you’d think someone at our table of 3 with nothing to drink in front of her would’ve been a clue that she forgot something). I asked for an ashtray, which never came. I had to wave at her to get her to come to our table while she was just standing behind the bar doing nothing. (time to lean? time to clean! — if she was adhering to this service rule, I could at least be a little sympathetic). Our appetizer we ordered (new hummus dish) came out less than 10 minutes before our meals — rather odd since it is a cold dish and should’ve been served much more quickly. In 2 hours our table was only served 2 rounds of beers.
Long story short — Sage, our server, screwed herself out of a tip, screwed the restaurant out of making more sales, and doubly screwed us and the restaurant as I will not be returning for future business. (This includes the other L&R locations which I also frequented from time to time)
I’m sorry to let you go Lion and Rose, but my time and money is better spent elsewhere.

The food was great and the wait staff was very attentive and friendly. The place is clean and they have a wide selection of beers. Not just the usual bud light, miller lite stuff. This is by far one of my favorite restaurants to visit. I will definitely be back, again and again. If your in the mood for a menu with a little something different, come check this place out. You won’t be disappointed.

Worst service and drinks I’ve ever had in my life, hands down. No wonder why this place is dead. Don’t have a margarita on special if you don’t know how to make one! So annoying.

Not going to pretend to be a food critic by repeating some new catchy dialogue I saw on the Food Network like a lot of people seem to do on Unilocal — I will just say that the place is what it’s supposed to be — an English pub. The food is what I’d expect when downing a pint or two (or four), and it’s very tasty for pub grub. If I had to recommend something, it’d be the mushrooms…
Waitstaff was attentive, I recommend my waitress, Sara, she sports a multi-​color hairdo, so she’ll be easy to spot.
Basically, if you’re goin to a pub expecting a Michelin experience or a hipster, then you’ve already lost half the battle, but if you’re lookin for a place to down a couple of pints (or more), load up on some pub grub, and catch a soccer match, then give this place a look.

The Lion & Rose on Broadway has a fantastic atmosphere for watching EPL football matches. If you are a fan THIS is the place to be! They open early for every match and supporters from all clubs can be found here every weekend. The local Arsenal supporters group always has a large turnout, but other groups are forming quickly making the vibe on match day a great experience for all football fans. The food is delicious and they have a great selection of beer with a full bar. The waitstaff, bartenders, kitchen crew, and management staff are awesome! This is the best place for a true «pub» experience in San Antonio.

This place is awesome! The greatest staff ever! And they always open early for the games!

Probably should have avoid doing a farewell luncheon here as the Lion and Rose was completely unprepared for 30 people even though we called a few days ahead to let them know we were coming. Waitress was completely overwhelmed and seemed to be the only one in the place; kitchen was slow in getting orders out (at least an hour for most dishes) and in the end, three of us (including myself) never got their meal. Complained to the waitress because there was no one else to complain to! No manager and no one besides the waitress said «boo» to us. Won’t be going to this place again; not worth the time and effort to scrub the smoke smell out of your clothes…

Good ambiance, a little smoky, don’t recommend it for children but good drink specials… coming back for lunch & drinks again! Food wasn’t bad for a bar…

Every time I come to San Antonio I always have to stop here. The beer is good and the food is awesome. It slow right now but the the atmosphere is good and great place to hang with a friend. Before I leave will definitely come back for to enjoy lunch.
