Cafe Expresso

Right across from Starbucks, with much better coffee plus car hop service. Friendly employees. I always stop here when I am visiting San Clemente.

The past two times I visited the Starbucks off Oso on my way to work I have asked for my macchiato upside down and they don’t seem to understand how to make it. So instead of complaining to them (I’m awkward) I decided to leave home a little extra EXTRA early to go to Starbucks off Estrella (not as close to a fwy off ramp, not as convenient). I get there and they’re packed. So at that point I’m like I need to get coffee right this second or I won’t get coffee at all. I remember that there’s a «drive thru» across the street. I’m like hey a little local shop, it’s probably going to be great! First off I had to park and go to the ATM (already running late) because they only take cash. Seriously? Then I get my «iced» «caramel» macchiato. It’s room temp, not cold. And there’s NO caramel. Sure I can taste the flavoring like they used some syrup flavoring, but I’m sorry there’s no ACTUAL CARAMEL sauce. So why did she say «sure thing» when I asked for an upside down caramel macchiato when all she was going to hand me was a semi iced caramel/​vanilla flavored ish latte??? And I got a bagel that sucked. Don’t waste your time!

Born and raised in San Clemente, today was my first visit to Café Expresso and it definitely won’t be my last! I stopped in because I wanted something other than Starbucks, and Café Expresso offers drive through service. I always wondered how its drive through worked because it’s located smack dabb in the middle of a two story business plaza. A menu sits outside the store front and the owner or manager come out to greet every car, take the order, and deliver the coffee. I loved that! I love seeing an owner actively involved in his business. The coffee was excellent but the service just cannot be beat. This place only takes cash or check so come prepared! If you’re in north San Clemente, or just passing through, Café Expresso is conveniently located off the the Estrella exit and definitely is not to be missed!
