We all, every single one of us, owe it to ourselves and our children to give back to the world we live in a little love. And unlike those who would accuse me of confusing sex with love based on many of my reviews, I am talking about compassion, not passion… doing something, acting to help this little ball called Earth to lessen our impact and perhaps even to reverse the damage we’ve done so far. We all contribute to the damage and there is much work that needs doing in a thousand different areas. As a member of the Surfrider Foundation, I dedicate myself to keeping the beaches clean, supporting unlimited access to our shores and defending the need to conserve our abuse of the seas. I do this in many ways, first and foremost by contributing to this fantastic organization and others such as the Natural Resources Defense Council( ) so they can carry on the duties they declare in their charters. Physically, I never leave any trash on any beach and, in fact, leave it cleaner by always finding trash to discard of properly. I educate by writing letters to newspaper editors, speaking at City Hall meetings, petitioning governments to protect the shores, voting for like-minded politicians, participating in protests when called for, and not ever being shy about informing smokers that their flicked cigarette butts wash right down onto the beach where children will put them into their mouths, fish will eat them and things get sick. There are many chapters of Surfrider(see link), including many inland, like Colorado. How does an organization such as this get support from states miles away from the ocean? Simple, trash flows downhill and finds it’s way into the sea. This trash needs to be stopped at the source. If you love the beach or taking your lover or children down to the sands; if you enjoy eating fresh, wholesome seafood; if you are tired of beach closures due to pollution; then I urge you to join Surfrider Foundation and show support to these dedicated people trying to make a difference. Believe me, your children will love you for it and you’ll be proud that you are helping. Earth needs it.
