Strangly its the only mail he gets but faithfully every month the offer AARP comes and we open the envelope for him. He is always so excited expecting a treat or something he might actually recognize but alas it’s always insurance related.

This aarp started hounding me soon as I turned 50 they do it to everyone and I thought how can they afford hundreds of thousands of dollars for this and why are they so motivated to sign me up when they’re supposed tb non-​profit? Their division aarp inc. earns 750 Million dollars annually in kickbacks from the numerous insurance companies etc that are permitted to use their endorsement and of course you pay for this in the form of higher premiums and less benefits. All their recommended services are a rip off. I finally called them 14 years ago when I was 54 to stop pestering me because no matter how many times you move they will find you and they did and never even asked me why.

The AARP is an nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to the interests of its membership consisting of persons over the age of 50. The AARP provides numerous services and products to its members including discounts for third-​party companies, internal-​member-​only products and services. They offer various publications and educational programs and send out not-​always-​welcome letters inviting membership to those poor souls turning 50 years old.
The AARP Information Office located in North Park is where I have gone the past couple of years to have my taxes done for free by retired accountants who donate their services in order to help seniors and low-​income people out. Now I must confess, I have received that dreaded welcome letter myself and was none too pleased about it. You might say I am still in denial about my true age. However, with the inevitable passage of time and the wisdom that accrues from growing older, I feel certain that sooner-​rather than later– I may be taking that AARP membership plunge. As much as I may try to NOT admit it.
For their honorable aid to those who struggle with math and taxes annually, I say that Yay! I’m a fan. Make an appointment and come on down to the office to keep THE (IRS) MAN at bay! AARP may get a bad rap sometimes for always hustling the senior agenda, but they really are pretty cool too.
