Art In Wood

Art In Wood, Studio 38 in the Spanish Village Art Center in Balboa Park, is a pure joy to anyone who loves all things wood! It was started as the community face of the San Diego County Carvers’ Guild, although that is a bit of a misnomer now, since there are currently no wood carvers in the group. It has a current membership of ten wood artists, accepted by juried review of their work. Everything exhibited in the shop is available for immediate purchase, and the shop is staffed by the artists themselves, taking turns throughout the month. The artists have a work area in-​studio, allowing them to work on their latest project while minding the shop. Visitors are welcome to watch the artist on duty work at their craft. The shop has intricate scroll saw wall hangings, retro-​feel wooden toys and puzzles, wood– turned bowls and vases, intarsia (colored wood inlay art,) platters, a hand-​crafted surfboard, decorative bottle stoppers, desk décor pieces, and wood-​turning writing pens, to name just some of the items displayed. I could get lost in there, given half a chance! If you’ve never visited, it’s a must on your next trip to Balboa Park.
