Clairemont Optometry

Dr. Nguyen was great. Went in for my first eye exam 1÷30÷2016 knowing I would need glasses. I used the $ 85 off coupon found here at Unilocal.Him and his staff provided excellent service. They explained everything to me easily. Even though they were short staffed (it was just Dr. Nguyen and David) they got through to me and 4 other patients in just an hours time.

Dr. Nguyen and his staff are simply awesome! I’ve been having headaches for quite some time now and from my primary care physician’s recommendation, he suggested that I get an eye exam since I never had one before. To my surprise, it turns out that I need a prescription as I am far-​sighted. I didn’t realize I was putting some strain onto my eyes, which explains my occasional headaches, I think. Dr. Nguyen was able to walk me through every procedure in a clear and comfortable manner. He is very professional, but is also very kind and willing to get to know me, as a patient and person! In addition, his staff members are very kind and helpful considering that they helped me with the basic paperwork and with picking out my frames.
I am really glad that I went to this office because they are open on Saturdays! This is very important for me because I work full time on Monday-​Friday. Even though this was only my first visit, I will continue to come here for my future optometry needs!

My experience was wonderful. David was great, very courteous, patient and respectful. This was the only location that I could find that was open on Saturdays. My eye exam was very thorough compared to other places. I’m glad I found them. Thank you!

This place was just awesome! I went in with my brother to get eye exams after being without one for a few years. The lady that greeted us was super nice and ended up being Very helpful when I was looking at frames! She walked me through what my insurance covered and didn’t cover.
Dr. Nguyen was the best! I was comfortable the whole time speaking with him and during the exam. My brother and I are twins and he even helped us find out if we would be able to fool a retinal scanner (we wouldn’t).
I picked out my frames and they were ready by the end of the week. The prescription was perfect. Couldn’t be any happier.
They also fixed my previous pair of glasses that were broken-​!

I am not a patient of Dr Nguyen’s but if I lived in San Diego I would not hesitate to see him for my eye needs.
I was visiting from out of town and got stuck in a bind when I realized I had left my contacts at home. Normally, this isn’t an issue as I carry with normal glasses around with me at all times, but I was in town to go snorkeling so not having my contacts handy would have ruined the trip.
I called around all morning to local optometrists and was unsuccessfully in finding help, until I called Clairemont Optometry. Ashley picked up the phone and was very pleasant and immediately tried to help. I gave her my prescription and she asked Dr Nguyen if they had a matching set of contacts. Sure enough they did.
Dr Nguyen greeted me with a smile and handshake, verified my prescription from my optometrist from home and I was off.
These guys saved the day and I am forever grateful for their help!

So I’m sure you are thinking optometry offices are all the same so why the 5 star ratings? it’s for Dr. Nguyen and his staff. When I was there in July I think some of the staff was new so there were a few glitches and that’s why 4 stars and not 5. Dr. Nguyen gets 5 stars though. He is very thorough and answered all of my questions. I got my glasses back in a week and they are great. I don’t love having to wear glasses and I usually go to wherever is convenient that will accept my insurance but Dr. Nguyen and his staff made the dreaded annual eye exam a pretty pleasant experience. I’ll definitely go there again.

I’ve been told I needed to wear glasses my whole life but it wasn’t until recently that I really started to notice difficulty in seeing while driving. I work nearby so I decided to set up an appointment at Clairemont Optometry and I’m really happy I did. From the moment I scheduled my appointment, Dr. Nguyen’s staff made me feel comfortable and very welcome.
Being that I’ve never actually worn glasses before, it was all a little overwhelming (picking a frame, choosing lenses, learning what my insurance covers), but Dr. Nguyen and his staff helped me every step of the way — taking the time to explain things and walk me through the process. They answered every question I had thoroughly and never made me feel like a total noob. The staff was patient, kind, helpful and I felt sincerely cared for.
There’s a huge selection of frames and I ended up picking one I love. Now knowing what it’s like to actually see well, I will definitely be coming back next year and every year after even when I no longer work nearby! Thank you Dr. Nguyen and opticians for your kindness and help!

I’m very disappointed with their customer care. Giving out my sons prescription to a third person without my permission or knowledge is unprofessional and illegal.

Great staff and selection of frames. Dr Nguyen was very thorough and careful in the exam. He is on top of the latest technology for contacts and offered me free trials of the newest lenses!

Dr. Nguyen and his staff are extremely friendly and accommodating.
After getting my glasses made (mail order frames and Costco lenses), I felt like everything was a little blurry and my eyes were tired.
I went to an optometrist recommended by a friend and he confirmed what I suspected – the prescription was wrong. In both eyes. The axis for the astigmatism correction was off as well as the power.
After getting my glasses remade, I can see perfectly.
I absolutely think Dr. Nguyen would have done a new exam at no charge and worked with me to figure out my correct prescription if I had gone back to him. However, I felt uncertain about what the outcome would be on the premise that if somebody is wrong once, how do I know they won’t be wrong twice? So, I fully admit that I did not give him the opportunity of a second chance.
But, I feel like optometrists need to be able to get it right on the first try.

Dr Nguyen was helpful and informative and described what he was doing throughout the appointment. Samira was incredibly patient and helpful as I chose my frames. Thank you for a great experience!

Unilocalers who gave 5-​star rating are absolutely correct, and Clairemont Optometry is one of those awesome gems in San Diego.
I made a same-​day appointment for eye exam & glasses, and 1.5 hours later, walked in and was greeted by Samira. Like 2 minutes later, Dr. Nguyen himself greeted me (always a plus)! They performed the exam, and both Samira and Dr. Nguyen talked to me throughout, and answered all my questions. Afterwards, Samira gave me some options for frame and lenses, and explained what was covered by my insurance, and what my out of pocket cost would be.
They carry a wide range of glasses, and they carried some frameless glasses, too. The selection process was made faster by Samira being able to pick out from their selection the one that were frameless. (always a plus when the employees know where things are)
Wonderful, and pleasant through out.
If you need new glasses or contacts, make an appointment, and see for yourself.

Best optometrist I’ve been to!
I was way overdue for an eye exam, and new prescription. After looking through all the doctors that accept my insurance, I settled on Dr. Nguyen based on his great Unilocal reviews. I figure, «he’s got to be good with all these reviews?» Let me tell you, HE IS!
Made an appointment and when I arrived was greeted by the friendly receptionist and Dr. Nguyen himself. They did the exam, he talked to me throughout making sure to answer any questions I had. Then after the receptionist even went over my options for frames/​lenses. Great visit.
I also went back for a contact exam/​fitting. Great experience for this as well. He made sure everything fit, I knew how to put them in and take care of them properly. He must of spent a good 20 minutes or so with me.
Very patient and willing to answer any question. Thank you Clairemont Optometry!

1. Dr. Nguyen contacted me the following day to apologize for the error. I’m grateful for his apology even though he didn’t directly perform the action. Nonetheless, his employees are a reflection of his business. I apologize for the initial harsh review.
2. Regardless, I’m standing by the rules. The insurance company indicated my member ID was not necessary. My name and DOB were more than sufficient. Samira could have also contacted my insurance organization herself, since she was at fault, instead I had to do it. Also, it’s against the law, for someone to indicate that you need to provide your SSN since the initial method failed.
3. Lastly, Dr. Nguyen only contacted me b/​c of my Unilocal review. If I didn’t write a review, he would have never known b/​c Samira would not have told him of the incident. Someone judicious/​impartial would have gotten both sides of the story before acting. However, he only got Samira’s side of the story. Someone ethical would not quickly assume that I was the one who wrote the Unilocal review. He could have said ‘I don’t want to make accusations or false claims, but do you have a Unilocal account?, did you recently review our business?, is your Unilocal username…‘
4. Overall, It’s rare that a doctor contacts the patients directly and immediately for his employees actions. It’s rare that a doctor apologizes. Thank you Dr. Nguyen for being a rarity.

This place is simply amazing,
Doctor Nguyen is really personable, courteous, and knowledgeable. I got fit in duette lenses, a type of hybrid lenses that is soft on the outside and hard on the middle. I used to wear hard contact lenses for as long as I can remember. For those who knows about those type of lenses… They are truly not the best comfort wise but do the job to clear my sight. Well I am truly amazed by the comfort and clarity I gained from the duette lenses. You would ask how come I know so much about those lenses? Well doctor Nguyen patiently explained to me all there is to know about it. It was essential for me to truly understand the change in my contacts since I was with the same type for so long. It really helped me feel more comfortable with transitioning.
The office was clean and the staff was surprisingly efficient. It usually takes a moment to get all my paperwork and insurances sorted out yet, this time I had no problem at all. The office also has a wide selection of frame with varying prices.
From getting exams in the past at Wal-​mart, Costco, target, or other private practice, I have to say that I have never felt that comfortable than I did at Clairemont optometry. I usually just want to get my prescription and get going. However, this time I really felt comfortable that I wouldn’t have minded hanging out there for a bit longer. It is so hard to find a place that is professional and friendly that I will not let go of that rare pearl that is Clairemont Optometry.
Now I just need to bring the rest of my family and everyone else there.

Dr. Nguyen and his staff are absolutely wonderful! He treated me like family and went above and beyond to ensure my eyes were healthy. He even helped me receive assistance in paying for a year supply for contacts. I mean what doctor does that? I have been telling everyone to come here and hope you will as well. You will not regret it.

Dr. Nguyen and his staff are truly wonderful. They make you feel welcomed from the minute you walk through the door. I decided to try Clairemont Optometry because of all the 5 star Unilocal reviews. I was looking for a new optometrist with a larger selection of frames. I certainly found it. They have a beautiful selection of frames. I am so pleased. My eye exam was very thorough and most pleasant.

Dr. Nguyen is THE BEST. I needed a new pair of glasses and my annual eye exam, but didn’t want to go back to my usual optometrist (there was an incident where I had a burst blood vessel in my eye and just wanted to make sure it wasn’t anything serious, and she charged me $ 80 for a 2-​minute exam to tell me it was nothing). While I was at Dr. Nguyen’s, I also asked him about one of my eyes being red and irritated for a few days. Dr. Nguyen gave me the most thorough eye exam I’ve ever had — and the best part is, he doesn’t use the machine that shoots air into your eyes, scaring the ever-​living crap out of you every time!
Dr. Nguyen was able to determine that I had an infection in my eye and prescribed me antibiotics right away. He also scheduled a follow-​up appointment to check in and discuss changing the contact lenses I use. I ultimately had two follow-​up appointments with him and he didn’t charge me a penny for either of them. That’s genuine patient care, if you ask me.
Getting an appointment was extremely easy. I was able to schedule one for the next morning, which was even a Saturday. Samira, the optician, is also super nice and gave me her honest opinions as I tried on practically every frame in the store. Not only that, I bought the $ 85 for $ 59 Unilocal deal and didn’t realize the fine print said it could not be used with insurance. Since I had already paid for the deal, Samira let me use it anyway.
Dr. Nguyen gets five stars because he’s friendly and GREAT at what he does. His shop also has a big selection of designer frames. The icing on the cake is that he has a stock of contact lenses right there in the store, so there is no need to wait to have them ordered and shipped — how convenient! I would recommend Clairemont Optometry to everybody I know.

It only seems natural to be a bit apprehensive about seeing your doctor, because who knows what new mortal things you’ll find about yourself… but I was very pleasantly surprised as soon as I stepped into this office. Customer service here is top notch. Frame selection is awesome. Dr. Nguyen is extremely professional and personable with his patients! It is often hard to find a doctor who is willing to make you comfortable, and you can certainly tell by his friendly and warm demeanor that he truly cares.
In short, I look forward to returning when I’m in the area to make sure my eyeballs are in the right place.
