Derek and Jim have really created an amazing environment for strength athletes at Deadweight. As coaches, they are both incredibly knowledgeable, as one would expect in a coach, but their focus on teaching, as opposed to simply providing passive instructions to be followed, is what sets them apart from others. They truly want to see every person in their gym succeed in whatever it is they set out to– Olympic lifting, Strongman, powerlifting, or just plain getting stronger. Everyone in the gym is supportive and helpful, cheering you on through tough lifting days and PRs alike, and they’ve really collected a strength family in this space– an accepting community that will push you and support you and teach you as you progress.

If you’re looking to compete in strength sports, or to just suck less in life this is the place to be. You’ll be lifting with coaches that have competitive experience, and aren’t Insta — coaches. Besides Strong(wo)man, and Powerlifting they also occasionally have MAS Wrestling nights. You will get constructive criticism on your lifts so you could improve and grow. If you’re looking for a gym with mirrors and for pats on the back this isn’t the place. Be prepared to never be strong enough(haha!). A short run down of strongman implements: atlas stones, sandbags, yoke, axle bars, logs, circus dumbbell, kegs, frame carry, and other fun tortuous devices ;). Anywho this will be my home gym until I depart SD.

Best gym ever. Yes it’s expensive. but does your LA Fitness have Atlas Stones? This place is a no nonsense strength training facility, you won’t find any machines here, or well tanned douchebags taking selfies by the bench. It’s small, and very focused on providing you a real linear strength training program, and I guarantee you will see results. Yes, it actually is in an alley! Is that bad? All of the best night clubs in the world are in unmarked alleys. you only just don’t know about them because you probably aren’t that cool. Nobody is going to give you shit about grunting or slamming the weights down, because no douchebags go to this gym. If you want to take selfies, go to LA Fitness. If you want to get FUCKINGSTRONG, go to Deadweight Strength. Even if you don’t pick a program that includes personal training classes, the trainers Jim and Derek are always watching and offering help and advice. This place is all about strength, and not at all about typical gym culture.

I’m so glad that I found this gym. Since I started training here about 4 months ago I have improved more than I have in the last few years! The coaches here are great, and the rest of the people who go here are equally great, making for an awesome community feel that truly pushes everyone to grow. I used to think I knew a lot about weightlifting, then I started training here and it has pushed me to a new level. Highly recommended!

Deadweight Strength is THE gym I was looking for. I found this establishment on Unilocal when I was searching for a gym that would cater to my strength training needs, and I found it at Deadweight Strength. Staff was more than willing to let me train at the facility for free to see if it was right for me(as long as i could preform basic barbell movements safely), and I was hooked after my first session. If you are serious about strength training, and sick of commercial gyms, then check out Deadweight Strength. Derek and Jim are awesome owners of the facility, and regularly give tips and form checks on open gym patrons when needed. I am a veteran, and Deadweight Strength provides the raw environment that I was used to in the service. Join this gym if you are serious about your strength gains. Period.

This gym is outstanding! The coaches have stocked it full of everything you need for strongman and powerlifting. I started out trying the Strongman events training they do every Saturday and was immediately hooked. Everyone here is helpful, friendly, and supportive. My first coaching session with Jim was very eye-opening and I learned more in that first hour about my strengths and weaknesses, form, bracing, and breathing than I have in years at other gyms. My strength has significantly improved in just 2 months of training here. This place isn’t for the casual lifter… people are here to do work. Update: After finishing up a year here at Deadweight, I’ve put 80 pounds on my deadlift, 75 on my squat, and 30 on my bench. I made it to Worlds in powerlifting, and we’ve got an amazing, cohesive group of athletes here that really support each other and push you to be better. I couldn’t picture myself anywhere else.

What can I say about this gym that hasn’t already been said? If you are looking for something with lots of logos, pizza events and rules against lifting heavy, go elsewhere. If you want amazing coaching, diverse and quality equipment, great gym members and to get stronger, then this is your place! The prices are super reasonable, especially considering with some memberships you get coaching sessions with Derek or Jim as well as Open Gym and Strongman workouts. In the 4 weeks I’ve been going here, I have increased my lift PRs by 10% or more, Derek and Jim have dialed in my form and I have tried tons of new things through the Strongman workouts. Not for the faint of heart but if you are open to learning a ton, working hard and meeting your potential, get here already!

I’ve been training with Derek for over 6 years. He combines an encyclopedic knowledge of fitness knowledge with an awareness of safety while managing to mix it up and keep it new.

San Diego finally has a place Strongman can call home. Powerlifting also shares this place of fortitude. Jim Kerns is a really amazing strength coach and can definitely help you reach your needs for max performance. I used to go to corporate gyms and was not happy. I found Jim and Deadweight Strength and now have a place were strength and conditioning can really grow. I compete Strongman now, with Jim’s guidance I have improved dramatically! Awesome home for Strength and Conditioning, Powerlifting, and Strongman!

Best strongman/powerlifting gym in San Diego! I recommend this gym to anyone who wants to be stronger and faster or just to be healthier and feel more alive. All the programming are done by knowledgeable coaches with plenty of experience and each person will have a tailored program for them. This will be the last gym you’ll ever go to, go check them out!

I am absolutely in love with the gym! Great staff and great equipment. All the strongman and powerlifting equipment I need is there to use whenever I want. I like how the coaches are really knowledgable and you can ask them anything. This gym is unique, not like all the other gyms around San Diego. I’ll be staying here for awhile!

Having been a competitive athlete most of my childhood and young adult life, I was extremely frustrated with the traditional gym atmosphere and experience. I bounced around trying different things(regular gyms, boxing gyms, CrossFit, etc) and I struggled not only to find something that held my interest or that I was actually excited about doing but I also struggled to find something that gave me the results I was looking for. I’ve been training at Deadweight Strength for about a year now and could not be happier with people, program and results. I highly encourage you to come check it out!
