After living in the OC for years, and recently moving to SoCal, I was disappointed in many of the Mexican restaurants in the area. Then, yesterday my cabinet maker and his coworker bought some hefty burritos for lunch. I asked where they got them, and more importantly, were they good. So, location is tucked in a group of buildings(think strip mall), behind the newly located Play It Again Sports store, which is why I hadn’t seen it! And yes, this is really good Mexican food! Rolled tacos and beef tacos are shredded beef with loads of meat, lettuce, guac, and Mexican cheese. Can’t wait to go back for one of those big burritos. And hey, if you want impeccable service and lousy food, there are hundreds of restaurants out there. Me? I’ll take great food with hand written signs, and not too chatty employees any day. I went at lunch time and there was a brusque business, but food was prepared quickly– under 5 minutes.

I’m not too fond of the carne asada fries here since they use thick fries. Other than that, everything is on point. Haven’t found a place with better hot sauce. Two favorite things I like to order from here are rolled tacos and breakfast burrito. Yummmmm.

Hand written signs on lined paper demanding you pay for refills are scotch taped to the soda fountain. This tells you everything you need to know about this cheap, dirty, and ungrateful back alley taco shop. They dont appreciate their customers. The California burrito was okay and I liked that they offered 5 salsas. However, If you have a choice, go to two blocks west on Mira Mesa blvd to Vallarta Express. Order yourself a California Burrito there and you’ll have done yourself a favor.

I came down for an afternoon Hockey trip with same boy and got another chance to go here. I had a single taco al pastor. I found it was a little pricey at $ 2.85, but the taco was huge. I am glad I only ordered one. The meat was good and was served with onions and guacamole. I will definitely come back again the next time I am here.

Best Americanized Mexican food(the burrito is an American invention) I’ve ever had. Their carne asada and pollo asado burritos are to die for. However, their California burrito is not as tasty as Chilli Peppers. You gotta try their complimentary marinated carrots as well.

Amazing freaking food. I have had many different dishes over there and each one is amazing. Cooked fresh comes out hot. Don’t expect any customer service though but they have been getting better at that. I wouldn’t buy anything to drink over there as they do charge for refills but there is a liquor shop next door that has drinks/sodas/etc. If you’re looking for mexican food and you are in the area then you need to go here.

Took a one day trip to SD to visit a friend and I don’t know if it was the fact that I was so close to Mexico that had an insatiable craving for some tacos. The portions are down right ridiculous. The surf and Turf burrito can feed a small village in Rural Veracruz! Tacos were mediocre but the burritos were impressive. All and all I would not drive an hour to come back here, but I’m dam full.

Shredded chicken is so good. Asada is good. Asado is good. Al pastor is really good. His special red sauce is amazing. This is one of my go to quick good places. I eat there a lot.

This place is that good, quality is low and customer service is poor. No smile or friendliness… Just basic bad Mexican food???

Maybe it’s just one of those days, but: Rude service. Got attitude asking about drinks. Got attitude asking for napkins and took a while to get one burrito. Vibe wasn’t very inviting.

After looking at the reviews, my husband and I decided we’d give it a try. And neither of us were disappointed. My husband ordered the two cheese enchilada plate which was served with rice and beans. The enchiladas were a bit skimpy but the flavor was all there, nonetheless. the beans were amazing. Sprinkled with queso fresco and cheddar cheese. I ordered two tacos, one carne asada and one pollo asada and they were both delicious. Cooked perfectly. The pollo asada was my favorite out of the two. Both topped with pico de gallo and guacamole. The in house chiles were very delicious and ranged from mild to extremely hot. Haha, I learned that the hard way. But still, the flavor was all there. We will be coming back.

This place has the best chile relleno burrito in town! Don’t forget to try the creamy jalapeño hot sauce!

I came here one morning on my way to work. It was kinda gloomy and cold and I knew my bar in my purse wasn’t going to cut it for breakfast. It looked like they had just opened. I ordered my breakfast burrito, bacon, egg, cheese, and potato. As soon as the order came out of my mouth the man in the back started cracking eggs. It took about 5 minutes tops to get my food. It was pretty freakingn good! I’m always hesitant to try new taco shops. As an SD native, you know there are shops and every corner and not all are good. I can only contest to the burrito but I will try for lunch some time.

Tried the carne asada burrito. For the price(under $ 5) it was very good. Didn’t feel as greasy as a typical burrito, which was a plus.

I was in this area and opened Unilocal to find a good place for lunch. The reviews here made me feel like it was a good bet. I went in during the lunch hour and one person was eating at one of the tables. Nobody else was there. The lady was nice and took my order for a California burrito. It was an expensive burrito, almost $ 7, but large. They had a good selection of salsa and the place was clean. I already read the comments on how they charge you to use your debit card and credit card so I paid with cash. I hate to argue with merchants on this one because they usually stand their ground but charging consumers a surcharge like this is illegal in the state of California. The only people exempt from this are government entities and utilities(like gas stations). The California Burrito was good, not great. The carne asada was not good, it had no flavor. It tasted like a pot roast. Plus, someone got a tiny bit crazy with the onions. The flavor and the onions were enough to deter me from eating the whole burrito. Now I’m still hungry and out $ 7. Maybe other things are better? I probably won’t return though.

Fresh, affordable, tasty. Vegetable oil and NOLARD a PLUSPLUS! The clerk and cook are both friendly and helpful. Large menu. Good selection of popsicles too! Location is convenient to other good places in same plaza. A group can easily find a great lunch with all the choices around there.

I lived in San Diego for 10+ years and never noticed this little taco shop during that time. I only discovered Don Lucio’s when I returned to SD to visit family nearby and was craving a California burrito. Forget the fact that it was 9:00 in the morning, I was on a mission. Obviously, that early in the morning I was the only patron of the restaurant. I placed my order and to my surprise, the woman started cooking the meat right then. Yes, that’s right. No pre-cooked carne asada here — the burrito is made to order! As if that weren’t enough, guacamole is included in the price of the burrito! Sure, the burritos here are not as large as those at other taco shops. But I’ll bet you money that the quality exceeds the quantity of other competitors. If only I knew about this place when I lived in California.
