My hometown favorite taco shop. Been going to this place since I was born… Best carne Asada fries, Cali burritos, carne Asada quesadillas. Everything on the menu is guaranteed to be delicious and a little slice of home. Service is always great! Try the horchara!

I’ve been coming to Jilberto’s since my high school years(Class of ’01). This is my go-to-place for Carne Asada Fries. The fries are thin, crispy, and fresh they never taste like old oil or are soggy. They come with Cheese, guacamole, and sour cream and as of today cost $ 7.50. My husband is a little of a picker eater so we order the sour cream and guacamole on the side, if you are ordering to go this is also a great idea to prevent the fires from get soggy. An adult could easily eat an order by themselves. My husband and I share an order fires with a ½ pt. of beans :) Note: If you order something other than the Carne Asada Fries and you don’t like it… well you order the wrong thing.

Always a pretty good place to go late night. The food is great. The portions are big. And the prices are reasonable. I would recommend this place.

This is my go-to when I’ve got the munchies, when I’m hungover, and/or when I’m just too lazy to cook for the rugrats. Everything on the menu is frikkin tasty, I’ve never ever received less-than-awesome service in the 10+ years I’ve been a customer, and they serve THEBEST carne asada fries anywhere. It’s just bomb ass Mexican food. Eat it.

Apparently, this is where carne asada fries orginated. Growing up in southside San Diego, I might be a little biased with my review about this taco shop. I remember when their fries used to cost $ 4 when I was in middle school. 20 years later, it’s about less than $ 8. Nothing has changed about the fries. Everything tastes the same as it did when I was just a kid. The fries are just like the ones you get at McDonalds, shoestring and without all the salt of course. Add sour cream, guac, cheese, the meat, and that’s it. It’s all about simplicity and you can’t go wrong with the simplicity of the carne asada fries Jilberto’s has to offer.

Very bad customer service absolutely bad the meat is mixed with green peppers, and the manager said well you have asked before you ordered the food. Doesn’t this jerk know about allergies out there. Anyways I’ll never return here at all. Nasty can beans and can meat just straight up nasty

Got the carne asada fries because honestly, what else are you going to get in San Diego?! They came with thin, crispy fries which I liked the best along with cheese, loads of carne asada and a green sauce. I had them take out the sour cream because I don’t like it. Anyway, the meal was flavorful and decent. Probably shouldn’t have eaten it before clubbing, but no regrets there.

I love this place! The food is really good the carne Asada fries omg! Everything from this place is good. They also have a big menu so you don’t know what to choose, from the rolled tacos, to the Asada fries or a big plate of menudo. It’s really little and only like 4 or 5 customers fit inside there so you would have to get your food«to go» because your wouldn’t have a place to sit. But the food is really good I recommend this place

Best chile rellenos I have ever had! Service is usually friendly. Salsas and sides were good but nothing special. Not great for dining in– small space and always seems that something noisy/annoying is happening.

My all time favorite Mexican food spot! I live literally less than a minute away but surprisingly I don’t come here often. But whenever I do, it never disappoints. In my opinion, this is the BEST south side SD spot to get authentic Mexican food. I mean you’re seriously minutes away from TJ. The carne asada fries are simple and that’s what I love the most. I’m not a fan of pico or beans in my fries. Partly because I grew up eating carne asada fries the way they make it. So if I go anywhere else I think of Jilbertos. I use to come here all the time during high school. A lot of kids would ditch class and come eat here.(Guilty) I love that the fries are crunchy and have flavor. It’s always fresh. Their carne asada burrito is bomb too! You’ll love it. Oh and the prices are good as well.

This is my local neighborhood taco shop. I always call my order in, and it’s ready in minutes. They have only messed up my order 2 times in the past 10 yrs, and they give me my correct order when I’ve gone back, no problem! A+ in my book

I’ve been going to this Mexican food shop since my elementary school days. It got even better when I ended up going to Montgomery Middle. Back when it was safe to roam the streets my friends and I would walk after school to Jilberto’s to get some carne asada fries. After exploring what SD had to offer Jilberto’s isn’t top ranked, but it’s still worth going to especially with the late night hours and affordable prices. For carne asada fries I’d travel a little more down Palm Avenue to go to Tacos El Gordo or El Cilantro, but if you have a particular fries preference this place might be for you. The fries are thin and you can definitely gobble a whole box down within minutes. I’ve had the best horchata/jamica here though. Good things to know: late night hours, takes card/cash, there’s seating area but not that much, they take phone orders

One thing I love about being a Palm Ave kid are the local taco shops! I’ve been going to Jilberto’s since I was in middle school and it never disappoints! Food is always hot and fresh and the prices are reasonable. I usually get a Cali burrito with extra sour cream & no pico. Another favorite item of mine is the carne asada fries(extra sour cream!). You can place an order over the phone ahead of time and pick it up within the time window they give you, which is pretty convenient and good to keep in mind if you are in a hurry. Just a heads up that this place can gat kind of crowded after the middle & high schools dismiss — around 2:30−4 are peak hours and sometimes the kids can get kind of obnoxious. One of the only negative things I can say about Jilberto’s is that there is a minimum $ 10 charge for a credit/debit charge, otherwise they’ll tack on a small amount of change for the charge. They started doing that earlier this year — other than that, I’ve got nothing to complain about!

I wanted my first review on Unilocal to be somewhere special, so naturally I picked Jilberto’s! I’ve been eating here ever since I was in high school 20 years ago! I moved to the Midwest long ago but every time I’m in San Diego the first stop is Jilberto’s. I just can’t get enough of those carne asada fries! Perfect for when you want to fill your belly with thousands of calories of Mexican food goodness or for a late night snack! I always tell people that the best spots for good Mexican food are the creepy holes in the walls and this place never disappoints!

5 Rolled taco’s w/cheese, guacamole, lettuce, tomatoes $ 4.15, carne asada burrito, carne asada fries, carne asada torta, quesadilla, California burrito, carrots and horchata. Never can go wrong with these folks. Comfort food from the South Bay. When I’m miles away I miss this taco shop.

I usually go to their sister place near by where I live, but I was in the area dropping off a friend early in the morning who needed a ride. I ordered their ham, egg, and cheese breakfast burrito for about $ 3.70 with tax. The burrito was average in size.( ) The amount of ingredients were good. I am used to more, but at least the burrito tasted very good.( ) I really liked the flour tortilla they used. It was very moist and had a chewy texture. An almost buttery yummy goodness! Very good breakfast burrito. The service was great. My food was done in minutes and the price was spot on!
