Love launching my kayaks here! You can drive right out onto the sand and offload the gear right out of the back of your truck! No hauling gear across a parking lot or sandy beach! The two kayak tour companies that use the beach always leave plenty of room for multiple vehicles to drive out & use the space. The city keeps the area well maintained year round; placing sand berms to create an obvious flow of entry & exit.

San Diego’s only beachfront boat launch is located at La Jolla Shores. Here you can drive your vehicle right up to the shoreline and launch your small vessel. Admittedly, this is not a fancy boat launch, but it works. No asphalt here – it’s all sand so four wheel drive is the way to roll. Drive all the way to the end of Avenida de la Playa which is about 300 yards south of the lifeguard tower. This is also the place where ambulances come to pick up injured or sick beach-goers. During the summer, when La Jolla Kayak runs round-the-clock tours, boat launch traffic is pretty steady and fairly busy. Had to deduct 1 UnilocalSTAR for lack of parking, overall. The Launch area is an excellent entryway into the unique La Jolla Ecological Reserve. This is a 6,000 acre area of sandy flats, rock reef, kelp forest, and underwater canyon habitats extending off the beach. The Reserve is a «look but don’t touch» area, fostering an abundance of plant and fish life. Kayak Fishing and removal of any objects from the Reserve or La Jolla Cove is strictly prohibited, and motorboats, jet skis, etc. are not allowed unless they are traveling under 5 mph. I would also advise regular cars to stay off the boat launch. I hate when people drive on the launch just for kicks or to check the surf. Sign reads… BOATLAUNCHONLY. NOPORSCHES.
