Luna Video Games

Fry’s employer suggested this place to us and we are so glad they did. They had so many of the old games here that we have been wanting to play lately that we will definitely be coming back. Had to carefully pick or we would be going broke soon lol. The staff seemed really nice they don’t bother you and answer any questions that you might have.

Normally I only review restaurants but I had a great experience today at this store and had to return the favor with a five star review. I took a box of seven or eight old video games (NES, SNES and Genesis) that I had previously taken to Gamestop to sell, and instead of the $ 0 I was offered at Gamestop (the clerk there actually suggested I go to Luna after seeing that they weren’t taking any of my games) the guy at Luna offered me either $ 12 in cash or $ 24 in store credit. I had also recently found an old N64 with some games that I wanted to play around with but I didn’t have that weird power adapter anymore. Not only did he have one in stock, he also had a really cheap controller cause I didn’t have one for that system. Sure, it’s a store in desperate need of organization, decoration, refurbishment and other improvements, but for what it is, a lone remnant of the past, it’s fantastic. We don’t have Funcoland anymore, so Luna is a pretty good substitute. And it’s certainly better for retro stuff.

Our 4 boys saved up their money for a wiiU and the husband took them down to Luna’s. They purchased the system based upon the sales clerk/​owner stating it was the wiiU Legend of Zelda Windwalker edition, came complete with everything for $ 249. We expected it to have the digital game and came back to turn it in because no game on the system. It was a No go because he didn’t say it came with the game and we just assumed we would get the bundle deal, game included and not just the fancy scrolls on the game pad.
WHAT A RIP OFF!!! Could have purchased a new bundled system with two games today for $ 299 at Best Buy, Walmart or any other place. Lots of great deals on Craigslist or Ebay with games included.
Save your money and your time. Husband USE to like this place for the retro games. Last time we give them our time and business.

The cashier helped us out! He has brown long hair and a beard I think! We traded our old ps2, gameboy, genesis and super nintendo games! It was between cash and store credit. Basically you come to this store you can buy old games for your console or new games with the new console. Or trade it in and get cash or store credit.

I was a little disappointed with the selection of retro games and their prices. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, but I don’t see a reason to come back.
They didn’t have many sought after titles and the prices were a little higher than other retro gaming stores.
And I know Atari cartridges are not worthy much, but to just have them stacked on the floor and against the wall just didn’t seem right. A true retro gaming store wouldn’t do that IMO.

great selection of games for prices much much lower than gamestop and on top of that the trade value was really good cant wait to come back and buy some more games

I got an apology from one of their members on Facebook after I posted a review. They assured me that the person who said the above message does not work for Luna Games. If it’s true than I’ll up their rating and apologize for the confusion that was caused by these reviews, however it’s also hard to swallow when the one of comments I got was about the sweater I was wearing tonight and that the messages were removed after I mentioned seek legal resolution. I hope that Ian and Co can get to the bottom of this before another verbal onslaught happens.
The prices are good buy I still won’t trade with them, but then again I won’t trade with any game store, for you’ll never get what the game is really worth.

Got to finally meet the legendary Ian today. It was great talking to him briefly (The wife was out in the car waiting), and seeing his store first hand. Great gaming shop, and real good selection. The best part was getting to connect with a fellow gamer, who loves gaming and knows his stuff. He’s the real deal, not some two-​bit reseller only into taking advantage of the retro scene. I hope I can get back down this way again someday and spend a little more time here. You’ve got to go in and check it out!

Luna Games is a cool shop. They have tons of throwback games. I go in to buy and trade ps3 games. I cant afford to pay $ 60 for the latest and greatest. Shopping here allows me to buy used games at a fantastic price. So far i have never bought a used game that had any problems. Also they have given me very fair prices on trading in games i dont play anymore. The guys working there have been helpful and nice too. Great spot to buy or trade games! Support this local shop and you wont be disappointed.

Nice stuff if you’re into retro consoles/​games, but don’t go here if you’re looking to conveniently unload your old games or consoles.
They’ll give you about 25 percent of what you could sell it for on eBay. At least that was my experience.
I know they have to pay rent. I know stuff doesn’t fly off the shelves. But they were too tight in a transaction I made with them and I won’t go there again because of that.

I’m not really nerdy enough to write a review that will do Luna justice. But it’s totally great!
I bought my man a N64 for Christmas, and besides online this is the first place we’ve found that still carries any of these old games. And much older! It actually makes me miss being a kid…
The guys working the counter are super knowledgeable, and super friendly.

Luna has got to be the best retro game store in San Diego! I started coming here in October 2013 and been a customer since, my friend actually told me about this store too! I know all the employees that work here and they are pretty chill, haha. I’ve been to the Ocean Beach location as well and it’s a bigger store so more selection but this location is convenient for me since it’s near SDSU. They usually run out of Pokemon games right away too for you Pokemon fans out there like me! You can always call or email them to see if they have what you want, Luna also brings stuff from the OB location that you would like as well so it’s best to check both stores. Luna beats GameRave any day lol

Luna is actually a time machine set to the 80s-​90s. This will send you back to your childhood where you will find an array of NES, SNES and Sega games. Caution: your thumbs may blister along this ride back in time.
Yes, I grew up saying Sega instead of Genesis. Besides retro games they have modern games and consoles too. Weve been to both the OB and La Mesa locations and the staff at both are always super friendly and knowledgeable. They certainly know their stuff and are fun to chat with and arent snobby or disdainful like the comic book guy from the Simpsons. We bought one of the double plaform consoles, the one that plays nintendo and sega games but it wouldn’t register a cheat code to one of our games. Plus, I found it weird to play nintendo or sega on a funky remote. I needed the familiar original – ya know? We ended up returning it after two days with a store credit minus a $ 10 restocking fee. Even though it was in excellent condition, they couldnt resell it for full price because it was opened. Fair enough. We ended up buying a Seeeeegaaaa, Sega 2 to be exact. They hooked us up with an video audio auxiliary cables which are hard to find. Its really annoying hooking up consoles via the antenna input so I was really thankful. They also gave us the Genesis 6 pak game for free. Even though most of those games in the 6 pack are featured in Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis collection, it was still nice of em. :-) Great thing about buying retro consoles is that they guarantee that they work otherwise theyll repair it or let you exchange it.
Needless to say, my bf and I have been back here a lot mostly buying Sega games we used to play as kids that havent been transferred over to PS3. Weve bought Side Pocket (billiards) which aint easy, Genghis Kahn II and Mortal Kombat II. Yeah Mileenas mah biatch!!! Sorry Im a bit of a trash talker when I play games lol. By the way, most of the retro games have no case let alone a booklet. Also if you buy mulitiple games they sometimes give you a discount like at $ 5 off a game. No written rule, its at the discretion of the cashier.
I love Lunas. I hope they succeed and expand. This place is like a gaming museum where the employees are the museum curators. Ill be sure to come back and check for Mortal Kombat I.

Love this place, they have a great retro selection of everything. Chances are if they dont have it, their OB location does.
Knowledgeable nerds, i go there for all my retro gaming needs and even the occasional newer used games purchases. Yeah, can probably pick it up online for comparable, but i’d rather support my local game shop.

There is no better store, in town or online, that caters to retro and current generation gamers.
The owner and the slim fella with the glasses are the most knowledgeable pair of people I’ve ever encountered when it comes to retro gaming.
Add that to excellent prices, constant sales, and a great attitude, and you’ve got the perfect store.

Clifford at Luna is a super nice guy and said hello to my son and I as soon as we walked in the door, we bought a used xbox game there and sure enough I went home and put the deadly circle scratch on it the same day. Came back and Clifford worked his magic on the game to get the scratches out as well as greeting every customer and taking care of all their different gaming needs with speed and professionalism. I was referred her by Gamestop who no longer deals in older games, I think Luna has gained all my business

I took my PS3 to get fixed there. They quoted me at 100 bucks, to which I agreed. They only charged me 60 bucks! Sweet. All the super cool old school games too. It’s good to see an independent non-​chain store like this.

This place is great for collectors and retro gamers. They also have some good deals. The prices are average and can be compared to Amazon.
There are 3 employees that I’ve encountered here.
The guy with the glasses is great! Very friendly and he knows what he’s talking about. He made my experience very fun.
The bald guy is also cool. He’s very nice and will help with whatever any customer needs. He also knows his stuff and is great to talk to.
The other guy is very rude and it seems that any question bothers him. When I show up and he’s there I can’t wait to leave. He barely talks unless a girl is around THEN he becomes charming. That’s just crap. He’s the reason I give Luna 3 stars.

Tons of video games, and tons of older systems to play them with. They also have used games for newer systems, but I really paid them a visit because I was craving some time with my SNES.
Really helpful and knowledgeable staff, but I, unfortunately, ended up not getting anything because the prices that they were offering were much higher than the ones I found on eBay. Had fun at the store, though. They have so many products to offer, and it all brought me back to my childhood. Systems, games, controllers, and even magazines. Cool old posters on the walls, too.

I’m a little perplexed that so many people are slamming this place. I have been there 3 times and each one was a positive experience. First trip was to buy an old game console, which they plugged in right there for me to see it worked. They sent me away with a new A/​V cable, still in the package. When I got home the new A/​V cable was crap, didn’t work. Second trip was the next day and they replaced the cabled no questions asked.
Third trip was yesterday to buy some vintage games. They had lots of games: everything I was looking for including a rare mario kart. I had checked the price on ebay for mario kart and Luna’s was cheaper. I bought 3 games and the guy cleaned the contacts meticulously on each one with some rubbing alcohol. He even gave me a discount on the third game.
In general I have found these guys to be helpful and very knowledgeable. They are clearly game nerds that have played every game ever made. They also have a great selection of old consoles and games.
