Great shows but only happen once a month and you have to get tickets by 2PM. Mal Hall’s funny as hell, and so are almost all of his guests. Tipsy Crow has it all over the other 3 local comedy venues in terms of booze, food, and service. The waitresses are quick, get your order right, they have your kind of beer and you call brand of liquor but well brands are medium quality also, and the food’s great. Don’t sit at the front row table on the right, the a/c blows right on you and you’ll freeze.

Based on all the excellent Unilocal reviews for this show, I was expecting to laugh until my face hurt. That wasn’t the case this past Friday. I’m just not a fan of when the comedians pick on audience members. It seems inappropriate for a night meant to relax and be entertained. One of the comedians told a guy in the front row that his shirt was too small because he was too chubby and advised him never to wear the shirt again — not sure the comedian was hammered or nervous, but his attempt at making a joke by poking fun at someone left a lot of us in our group feeling uncomfortable and irritated. If there’s a rule saying«no heckling the comedians» there should be a reciprocal rule to not heckle the audience. Overall, it was a unique experience — but I most likely will not return nor would I recommend this event to any of my friends.

Very funny. I laughed the whole time. Better than the comedy clubs I went to in NYC and much better than anything else here in SD.

Awesome show! The comics were all REALLY funny, and the atmosphere at the Crow is really amazing. For $ 10 there is no better comedy show in town. Duh. For $ 10 you can usually still grab a good view table seat if you show up early. The comics are always funny at the shows I’ve seen and it’s a great place to bring a first date :)

Comedy clubs have left a pretty sour taste in my mouth over the last few years with their Inflated door prices, gimmicks, trickery, «free tickets,» exorbitant drink costs, minimum drink orders, terrible service and most of all, lack of talent. For these reasons alone I don’t get too jazzed about going to see local live comedy anymore, but knowing that Mal Hall had his name attached to this show I expected a step up from my previous lackluster comedic nights out — I was not disappointed and his reputation precedes him. Mal is a class act and simply gets it. It almost as if he sees the racket that the other clubs have been running around town and wants to be anything but that. First of all Tipsy Crow is not a comedy club, they just transform the downstairs portion of the building into one for the night. It’s a bar run with bar rules with Mal Hall at the helm for the evening. You will pay a(reasonable) cover, there are no gimmicks or trickery, the drink prices are not swollen, there are no drink minimums, the service is spot-on, and the talent is great! We had the chance to watch Mal and three other comedians who were all experienced, funny and professional. The show ran smoothly and our continuous laughter made the time fly by. Overall great night and I highly recommend this show when it is happening in town — check the calendar!

Went to the show on 12÷27÷13. Very much enjoyed the show that Mal put together and Mal’s own portion too. Tipsy Crow basement drinks are weak and over-priced but I didn’t go there to drink. The seating feels over-crowded but better than an airliner. I’d hate to have to evacuate from there in an emergency. But I didn’t have to. They have a LOT of security people working there. Why? Dress code prohibits gang attire but men are still allowed to wear backwards ballcaps. In my opinion, gentlemen shouldn’t wear hats indoors anyway. All ages from 20s to 70s enjoyed the show on 12÷27÷13. Highly recommended.

I have to say that the few times I’ve been to a show, they’ve all been great! I always feel like I have a good laugh here and the comics are on point. I also like the fact that there isn’t a stupid drink minimum where I have buy overpriced coke’s even after I already paid for the show. It also doesn’t hurt that happy hour is until 8 and the food is pretty good too. The Tipsy Crow is one of my favorite spots to go to in general. Definitely recommend it all around!

Some pretty good stand-up comedy. The place was full, and people were chuckling, but it was not 5-star funny. The audience didn’t seem to think so, and I didn’t think so. Why so many 5-star reviews? Mal Hall announced 2 or 3 times during the evening, that anybody posting a 5 star review on Unilocal would be emailed 2 free tickets to a future show. This is how the Unilocal review system sometimes gets corrupted.

What a hidden gem! I loved the atmosphere of the tipsy crow when I visited it as a bar in the past, but I REALLY loved downstairs when it was transformed into a comedy show. The comics were all really awesome! By the end I was fighting my bladder(never got up to go to the bathroom, not enough pause in between comics to run to the restroom), trying not to laugh TOO hard so I didn’t pee my pants. service was great! didn’t realize there would be cocktail waitresses coming around but they were all really great and nice: D Dr. Mal, I am a pizza person too(it’s my favorite!!!), and as a small youngin’, i did not get my pizza cut up for me with a knife and fork, i picked it up with my hands and ate it upside-down :) Also, wow the first act, a guitar player, John right? you’re awesome!!! not gonna lie, your last song got me(and probably every other straight woman in that place) feeling a little warm ;) ohhh, guitar, the panty dropper lol found all you guys to be outstanding. I was laughing all night! wonderful! Oh! also finally tried their signature Salty Dog, mmmmmmmmmm

(–1)The fourth show was a bummer, a lot of repeat comedians from the previous shows with the same jokes. Mal even had most of the same jokes, the beard, the bag, what kind of black guy are you, and other repeated skits. I understand that getting up there every week can be a little difficult to come up with new fresh ideas/jokes, but if you want people to keep coming back you gotta do what you gotta do. (-1)Another craptastic deal with the Tipsy Crow is when you purchase your tickets online then call to reserve(like the site says) a set of tables for a group they are totally clueless on how to help you, then they get an attitude and say to just show up at the door Friday night and deal with it, so we went from a group of 10 down to 4… (-1)Also ask what your drink price is prior to ordering, $ 11.75 for a 22oz bottle…(that was on ground level before the show), also the ‘Stock Market’ drink system/happy hour is quite confusing just to order a dang drink… Downstairs for the show, My gf and I each had 2 Hefinweizen drafts(I don’t recall the the brand) and the bill was $ 38.23… Seemed quite high and odd to have a number like that when there wasn’t any food ordered with it. I doubt I’ll be back, I’ll probably try one of the other comedy shows next time.

Mal — you put on a first class show, and in return I prmosed you a first class review. I came to San Diego for my bachelor party last weekend. We were the tough looking group in the teal blue shirts(yes, thanks for giving us sh*t about those!). I couldn’t have found a better way to kick off the night. All the comedians were hilarious, and Mal really sets the stage for them and has some hilarous humor himself. Oh, and Mal — thanks for the shots before, during, and after the show!

In all honesty I’m a pretty serious person. I don’t laugh at much and most comedy I find either too raunchy or just plain boring. Mal Hall get’s me laughing! It’s a small venue that has a really nice feel and vibe to it. I’ve gone four times and have enjoyed myself each and every time. The comedians are diverse enough and Mal has plenty of original material to keep you laughing and coming back for more. I do wish that the venue would offer more of a selection as far as drinks go. I don’t drink alcohol so it would be nice to have a larger juice or smoothie selection but that is just a minor gripe. I highly recommend you grabbing your friends and enjoying a nice inexpensive night out at The Gaslamp Comedy show @ the Tipsy Crow with Mal Hall!

I’ve been to this show a total of three times, each time Mal has booked excellent comedians. Not once has the audience not enjoyed their time, its very obvious that Mal Hall puts a lot of effort into his show and giving everyone their money’s worth. I would recommend this show to anyone who’s looking for a great comedy show at very good price. I’m not too partial to the bar area, but the service and food is also good at the Tipsy Crow.

Mal always puts on a superb show! Tipsy Crow’s basement is one of my favorite comedy venues in San Diego because it feels a little like you’re entering a secret room for a sneak preview of something really awesome. The best part is that the show always turns out to be truly awesome so the anticipation the venue creates is met well by the performers. If you pre-drink upstairs before the show, their happy hour includes a «drink exchange» where drinks change prices through the evening based on demand — it’s a great way to try new things cheap too! Once settled in the basement, everybody is seated at a table where you can order dinner, drinks or snacks from Tipsy Crow’s menu, which is quite excellent as far as bar food is concerned. I am always happy to eat there. I’ve seen Mal quite a few times at different venues, and you only get a snippet of his humor as he introduces the main acts he delivers, but he cracks me up every time. I bring various friends to see him, and every single person leaves telling me they want to start following Mal. His humor is easy to relate to. When booking the performers, he seems to include a little something for every humor type so you’re bound to love at least one, but usually all. As for other items — they always have a professional photographer come in, and usually a comedic musical act to open, so it really is the little things that round out the experience to make it even better. Do yourself a favor and catch Mal while he’s in SD at this show. He’s originally from SD, but spends a lot of time elsewhere for the job so support a local talent and enjoy the show!

You never know about independent comedy shows and while I was hopeful this show would be great based on Unilocal reviews, I was still unsure. Never fear fellow Unilocalers, Mal Hall and the comedy line-up(Aug 31) slayed me with laughing. Each and every comedian on stage was drop dead funny. This was a great show and I highly recommend it. Service during the show was decent, and food/drink prices didn’t gouge you so overall, thumbs up for the Tipsy Crow too.

It takes a lot for me to laugh my whole-hearted, from the stomach laugh – and this show does just that! Every time I’ve attended I have literally laughed out loud, almost to the point of my beer or drink coming out of my nose. Mal is always hilarious and the comedians that join him never fail to be excellent. Plus, tickets are totally affordable! So if you’re looking for a way to have fun Downtown during the weekend without spending an arm and a leg – this place is the place to go!

Bought the $ 10 tickets(standing only). Don’t waste your time or money buying this ticket :/The room is long and narrow and you end up standing up in the way back next to the noisy bar, and the staff, patrons and other comedians talking away and the music from upstairs. so hearing the show is a hit or miss. Unfortunately, Mall Hall was a dud that night. When mentioning this to my friends a friend of his chimed up that he is funny but was lazy that night because this was his show he does every week?(Hmmm a lazy comic= a lousy routine.) We were about to walk out the door when thankfully the other pre-comedians and headliner recovered the night. No 2 drink minimum but if you really want to go watch a show here the $ 20 ticket purchase is required so I would rather go to American Comedy Co. and or the La Jolla Comedy Club and pay the $ 10 ticket and 2 drink minimum.

Doesn’t get better than $ 10 tickets and no drink minimums! I like having the option of getting drinks without feeling like I have to, so kudos to you guys for doing that. Drink servers were fantastic and always checked our tables without being too pushy and forcing us to order more drinks. Nice venue. I came here early with the bf after reading other reviews about seating and all that. So we got there around 6, went inside the bar and sat down at the table for some drinks and appetizers. Just note that you have to line up outside Tipsy Crow to get a table number. We made the mistake of going inside for drinks and food and didn’t realize that we had to wait outside. Luckily it worked out and we got a table. The show started relatively on time and ran a little later than 9:30, but no complaints… the show got better and comedians funnier as the time went on. Comedians were pretty cool, down to earth, stayed after to chit chat with patrons. Jokes were not just about sex, actually I don’t think they made too many sexual jokes that night, which is nice. Last time I went to a comedy club, it was just sexual jokes. Good for date night!
