Marina Inn and Suites

My boyfriend and I had a reservation here on Valentine’s Day. We walked into the room and walked right out demanding a refund. The room was dirty and smelled really musty, there was no refrigerator or microwave as advertised, the shower floor was disgusting and probably moldy (will attach photo), and the window in the bathroom looked right out to what I assume was a homeless persons home — a brick wall with a bunch of garbage scattered everywhere. Not to mention we reserved a king bedroom and got two doubles instead. We were not the only ones who were unhappy. The tiny check in area was full of people complaining. The man at the front desk was very helpful though, I believe his name was Michael? He helped us out. The ONLY good thing about this hotel is the location, as it looks out to the water from the front and had a park within walking distance. Save your time though. We are by no means picky when it comes to hotels, but we just could not do it with this one.

Close to the airport, Little Italy and it’s cheap… those are the only good things. Well, and the front desk person was nice and very prompt. People checked in at about 2:00am right on top of us and screamed and hollered and three things all night. I think it was 4 or 5 homeless going together on a room or something but it was spooky. The area is very sketchy. Won’t be staying here again:(

This is the absolute worst hotel I’ve ever been to. I only stayed 20 minutes before having to leave. After checking in to an extremely hot room at 10 pm, my complaints were dismissed. It was 92 degrees at night and probably 100 or more degrees in the room. I was told to turn on the AC & wait for it to cool off. The manager, Mr. Delgado said they turn off the AC at 3 pm. The AC didn’t make a difference after 15 minutes so we decided to leave since no other accommodations were offered. I had to be at a conference at 6:30 am and needed to rest in comfortable room. Before leaving, I asked for a full refund and he refused. I was charged for 4 nights and only stayed 20 minutes. Mr. Delgado runs his business in an unfair, unprofessional, and unethical way. Now I have to contact corporate to get my money back. If this review could have zero stars it would! Please don’t stay here, you’ll regret it.

Not bad for a short impromptu trip. Great price, Great location, free parking. We booked a room with a king bed & we were supposed to have a microwave… But what they ended up having was a two queen room with no microwave. They advertise «poolside wifi» making it seem like there is a pool but really it’s at a sister hotel 1 – 2 blocks up. Kind of misleading.

Don’t go for the pictures, i do photography as a hobby, and i know what i am talking about.
I don’t know where to start. the first time i saw this hotel (or a motel) it gave me a really bad impression. the guy at the front desk seemed to know nothing. i went to my room, it smelled really bad. the room had one piece of towel. i asked for a some extra, the guy said «we don’t have extra towels, everyone is asking for some.» then i got a really smelly towel, almost seemed to be used. the room did not have an iron or ironing board, and i asked for it, the same front desk guy brings me just the iron, and says we don’t have ironing board so just use iron (i don’t know how he supposed i would use it without a board, may be on bed?)
The parking lot is so small, there is no enough parking space for every room, i had to park in some other hotel parking lot and had to walk. the two time i got a chance to park, the parking space is so narrow, i got door dents on my car both times.
The bathroom was terrible. it stunk like there is no water trap system installed so the smell from the sewer came into the room specially if you are taking the hot shower. it was disgusting.
it was a absolute terrible place to live when they charged me $ 170 a night, for a crap lower than half star motel (they might have higher rating but once you stay, you will know it for yourself that it is actually a lower than a half star motel). Please Do not go there and waste your money

Hotel is in a good location, however we had serious issues with management and the place was way over priced. First off they charged my credit card before we had even arrived and we checked in at 3pm. I had previously been notified of a 24 hr cancellation policy but when we checked in they said 48 hrs. Our room smelled bad, the phone doesn’t work, the door didn’t lock unless slammed shut but at least it was clean. I then notified them 48 hrs in advance that we wanted to cancel the remainder of our stay and was told that they would have to check with their manager who would be on duty the next day. Checked the next morning and the manager was not on duty but the front desk promised she would promptly be called. Asked an hour later but the front desk had never called the manager. Finally they got back to us but they said they would have to charge us an extra night. Called the manager and after a heated debate about their previous cancellation policy was allowed to cancel without an extra night’s charge. Then I noticed that my credit card had been charged an extra $ 50 for a supposed deposit fee which was never mentioned to me. Our sink had not been draining for two days and that night backed up with smelly sewage. The manager refused to let us change rooms. At checkout the next morning I was charged $ 122 per night which seemed ridiculous since we had to brush our teeth in the shower but I did get my $ 50 deposit back. All I can say is if you book this hotel plan on a short stay!

Wow! This is the smallest room we have ever paid for. We paid 200 $ for one night small room tiny shower no closet. I called when we arrived to San Diego to see if we can check in early and they said NO! till 3. Thats an inconvenience.

Budget friendly. Good location.
Most of SD pretty much rapes you with parking prices varying from 20 to 40.
Free parking, walking distance to a lot of spots. Couldnt complain about any of that.
Room otherwise needs some fixing. Small and oudated. Don’t really have much experience at staying in Motel-​type spots but I felt like I was staying at the motel in Breaking Bad.
Update it more and I could see this place being actually okay.

Beware of booking with this hotel. Do not give them your credit card information! Do not book through third party like Expedia. They will take money from your credit card even though you have cancelled the reservation way ahead of time. Be aware they seem to be a criminal organization! do not stay here!

Pros–
The staff was nice, they checked us in earlier and we were able to leave the car in the parking after check out.
The location is the main plus, it’s in Little Italy, close to public transportation, across the street from the ocean and the Maritime Museum. Safe area. Lots of restaurants around. Great walking area even later at night. Free parking
Cons–
Lack of breakfast (it was discontinued a few months ago). Taxes kept being added to our bill, so not a lot of savings comparing to the initial price through booking. We got room #100, avoid it! It’s near the reception, so you can hear noise, luckily not late at night or early morning. The room was newly renovated, but it’s the smallest, the most impractical room we ever stayed in. It’s maybe OK for one night if you travel light. There aren’t any closets, tables, no room to put your things on. Just 2 tiny night stands and a bed. AC didn’t work well. No hair dryer, no fridge, no microwave, no phone. Just a room and a shower-​water spills out when you use it. Strange new design of this room. Lipstick on the bed sheet when we arrived, stains on a pillow.
So, maybe good for a night or two if you need a place to sleep and shower and do lots of sightseeing.

We made a last minute reservation in SD because this whole trip was out of sudden.
To be honest, I’m only giving this motel 5 stars because of the staff Mike. Upon arriving, he was very welcoming so it made us quite comfortable. We ran into a little incident during our first night. A random guy was trying to fit into the parking spot next to my car when he side-​swiped my rear bumper. The funny thing was, we just happened to walk out of our room when this happened. Well, this guy was a complete jackass so a little incident turned into a big scene where cops got involved. Long story short, Mike treated the situation very professionally. He was explaining to the guy what «should» be done and whatnot because I was getting extremely frustrated. (The dude refused to show any proof of insurance) However, he just wasn’t cooperating. Mike agreed to be our witness since he was practically there when it occurred. (I asked him how did he know when all this was happening? He says when someone is taking a long time to park, he usually comes around to see what’s going on) Although the front desk was busy from time to time, Mike still managed to check up on the situation every chance he gets, now that’s dedication and being responsible because it happened on the motel property. It’s very rare to find a staff working at a motel as dedicated as Mike. He should be working at a 5 stars hotel in my opinion.
The overall stay was okay. The room was quite clean and the bed was comfy. The downside is the parking situation, it’s very small and I can see people side-​swiping people cars very easily while trying to park. And if you get back late, you’ll need to park 2 motels down at the Pacific, which was quite inconvenient but hell, the lot is a lot bigger. But yeah, I’d give it a 3 stars if it wasn’t for Mike.

This place is a disappointment. Its a less then Motel 6 grade motel with POOR MANAGEMENT.
Stayed here on 10÷5÷14. To start off our TV picture was unwatchable, phone in the room didn’t work, and there were bugs on the wall– all of which was made aware to the night manager Carlos around 12am when I had to call the front desk with my cell phone due to LOUD noise coming from the plumbing that could awaken the dead. He came to my room unable to fix the problem and I told him about the other issues. He left. The noise stopped briefly, but started up again about an hour later. I called the front desk again and spoke to a different man and said I would like to switch rooms so I could get some sleep. He said he would see what they had available and get back with me. Well he never did. Instead I dealt with this returning God awful noise every hour or so up until about 6 am.
In the morning around 10 am I walked into the office and spoke to the «manager» Elizabeth. She said she couldn’t refund my room since I paid through a third party. Makes no sense. I called the third party and told them my issues and they spoke with the Elizabeth and said she acted like she knew nothing of this issue!!! These people are crooks and liars!

I am so angry I can’t even type. And with that being said, I will not. Too much to say NEGATIVE about this place.

LISTEN AND LISTEN GOOD, there are only two kinds of people who stay at the Marina Inn and Suites: those who don’t know any better and those who’ve been tricked by sites like Travelocity. I fell in the latter category.
This past Fourth of July weekend, my husband and I booked a two-​night stay at a hotel through Travelocity’s mystery deals for our San Diego trip. The way this feature works is that you book first, then find out where you’re going. And we poor, unfortunate souls ended up being sent to the Marina Inn and Suites. Once the name was revealed, we quickly did research and realized that there were many negative remarks from consumers. Since our payment of $ 356.68 was non-​refundable, our trip was sealed.
Even though we were uncomfortable with the place upon arrival, we tried to make the best of it until we encountered a ROACH making a journey across the carpet! I have the pictures to prove it! We wanted to leave immediately. We were beyond disgusted because we know where there’s one roach, there are many. And roaches say a lot about a place. In our many travels, we have never paid money to share a room with such vile creatures. We reported the roach incident to the front desk and they came to spray Boric acid in the room because we wanted to have peace of mind. Now, whatever was in that bottle looked more like soap and water!!!
The only good thing about staying at this MOTEL was knowing that our day was packed with activities and we didn’t have to stay in it for long. This place is nothing but false advertisement. Their pictures are a lie from He**. It’s nothing like an Inn or a Suite. I know some Unilocalers claim, «you get what you paid for» but I expect better even if I only handed over a dollar. I won’t bore you with more negative details but in a nutshell, the place is a dump. It’s dirty and old. I took a shower with sandals on and never let my feet touch the carpet. You can visibly see the smear of dirt on the curtains. And the room did not come with an iron nor an ironing board. Yeh, yeh, yeh, parking is free but it’s so limited. And yes, your pets stay for $ 20 a night and the location is somewhat prime, but it’s not worth your dime nor your time.
Upon check out, we had to take the time to shake down our clothes and belongings to make sure we weren’t taking any uninvited guests back home with us. Though we did some cool activities while in San Diego, the roach incident is unforgettable. Moving forward, I will not use Travelocity for future travels cause I can’t believe they sent us there! Surely they do their research! Talk about their slogan, «go and smell the roses.» It was more like, «go and smell the roaches.»
My husband and I are by no means hotel snobs, but after this experience we won’t stay anywhere unless it’s four-​stars and up. We will pay the extra buck or two to have a clean, comfortable stay.

Update on Travelocity as of 8÷1÷14− So far that $ 50 credit for my troubles has not shown up in my account. The lies they tell… that’s okay. They just lost a long time costumer.

Dear Manager,
Thank you for the generic response. If you took the time to look at the pictures for this motel, you would see that pictures have been posted, including the one with the roaming roach. This is not personal, it’s about business. No harm, no foul. And by the way, roaches are not critters, they are vile creatures that should not appear in a well-​kept place.

Overall, you get what you paid for. It was clean but not super nice and I think their bathrooms need some rennovation. I booked about a week before our trip for one night through expedia for $ 115 for 2 queen beds.
PROS:
The location is prime, just a trolley ride of a few stops away from the convention center/​gaslamp district. It also has a gorgeous view of the beach being on the corner of the block and is only a short walk away from the maritime museum & some nice parks.
Price was afforable, check in/​out time was really easy.
They also serve breakfast in the morning, but I didn’t get a chance to check it out.
CONS:
Bathroom definitely needs some rennovation, and better soaps.
It’s on the corner of a very busy intersection and near the airport, so you do hear a lot of activity going on if you’re a sensitive listener.
Parking easily doesn’t accomodate all the rooms available, can get messy late in the day
I was also asked to pay a deposit, cash or credit card acceptable.
Our AC was really loud, and we had to turn it off at night.
Overall, everything felt a little old. For this trip, we weren’t looking for anything fancy and we didn’t see ourselves in the room for a very long period of time. But there are at least 3 other hotels along the street right next to each other. Next time, I would try one of those.

Horrible!!! I’d give it a negative 5 stars but this website made me put at least 1 star to be able to publish my comment. The place smelled awful (like someone died), linens were dirty and management refused to do anything to correct the problem, or to compensate me for not being able to stay in a room that smelled like a combo between death and sewage.
Yeah, I wasn’t in the room for 5 minutes, asked to checkout and get a refund, and after 2 weeks of haggling with management (and not having calls returned) they inform me that the owner will not refund my money.
Would NOT recommend this chain to anyone, and OBTW, they’re affiliated with Vagabond Inn in Hotel Circle so you may want to steer clear of that one too. The owner is a real tool!

You get what you pay for.
Stayed here for a weekend. The person who checked us in was alright but asked us to pay deposit even though we payed with our major credit card. (Maybe because we looked young) and looked at me and my fiancé and asked her like «one room?”(Shocked)
Yes that’s what we had reserved for.
Few problems:
There was no chair in the room. Fridge didn’t work. AC vents kept falling down so we had to put toilet paper in the corner to keep them up. Toilet seat was broken, when we told them he was like «oh we did our inspection today and we know» well if you knew then why did you give us this room?
Parking is limited.
Few good things: close to downtown, little Italy and many bars and restaurants.

Let me start out by saying that I bought the Unilocal deal, which made it so that I only paid $ 50/​night to stay at this hotel… SO it’s kind of hard for me to complain when I got such a great deal on the price.
Customer service — pretty good
Comfort of bed — not the greatest AND I brought a down comforter to sleep on, still couldn’t get to comfy.
Sound level — not too bad.
Other Pros: Decent sized mini fridge, good little microwave — both appliances pretty new looking. SO close to Little Italy! Little Italy has MANY great places to eat. :) SO close to the Gaslamp district and the trolley!
Cons: the parking is pretty gnarly. Lucky for me I always got a spot. There are bums that roam around this area… I’m pretty sure we had one following us for a few blocks at one point. Bring pepper spray?
I’d probably stay here again if I could get the same great price.

This place is your classic budget hotel. Cheap linen that feels dirty, yucky carpet, etc.
However the location is superb. It’s only a mile or two to Gaslamp and right off the freeway. You also get free parking (if you can find it) and free wifi. Staff is also friendly enough.
But best of all, for only $ 20 you can bring your pet. That’s the only reason why we picked this place since they didn’t hassle us at all and there was no pet deposit or anything like that.
If it wasn’t for the pet thing, I would give this place 1 or 2 stars.

Marina Inn and Suites is located in Little Italy district of San Diego, very close to the maritime museum and the Santa Fe Train Depot (Amtrak Train Station). The unique thing about this motel is the price, is the lowest of all hotel Little Italy and surround area.
Pros:
+ Price (Lowest in little Italy and nearby) $ 60 two beds in a weekday only !
+ Free Parking included (First come first serve)
+ Free WiFi
+ Free Breakfast
+ Friendly staff
+ No issue with the room, working heater and the room is clean.
+ No train noise or earthquake shaving when pass by unlike some other hotel nearby
+ Great location, walking distance to several San Diego attraction.
Cons:
— Street noise is very high especially during rush hour.
— There are no tablet in the lounge so you have to grab it to go only a bit hassle.
— Parking spot could get fill out real quick in the weekend.
Note:
* Check in early in Friday or Sat or will not be parking spot left.
* Go to their official site, it has lower rate.
Conclusion.
* If you are into budget travel in San Diego, this could be hotel to look with it, the rate in the website is lowers than third party site like Expedia. Paid only $ 60 for two beds in a weekday. Other hotel would charge closed to $ 100 or more, free parking is a major factor since parking in San Diego overnight are very pricey, not to mention you get free WiFi and breakfast? Often people said you get what you paid not necessary this one, you get a lot more then you paid for that is for sure. People expect a very nice hotel in this price just crazy I think. Is more idea for people who party and drunk then go back late, if you in a business trip, this will not be your choice of hotel.
