I got the regular fish and chips combo and really enjoyed my meal! Two big pieces of fried fish and my choice of onion rings and a side salad. The selection of sauces is also quite nice, as a I could try out different combos with my meal. I’d recommend trying out the french fries or zucchini instead of the onion rings– they were just a little too bland for me. Whole meal was about $ 9

I went here on Friday for National Fish n Chips Day! Not sure if that’s a real holiday, but it was a good excuse as any to go indulge. And I was not disappointed. The folks are really friendly and helpful. I ordered the Double Combo(1 fish &3 large shrimps). I really liked the light breading. You really get a good taste of the fish. Most places fry it beyond recognition, but here it’s a nice batter & fry. Almost has a tempura texture which I love. I didn’t get the fries, but ordered the rings instead. Very good. Like another reviewer mentioned, you can bite into it without making a huge mess, The onions were big & fresh. I added on a clam chowder which was nice. Chock full of goodies. Could use a bit more clam bits, but good nonetheless. The prices are really good too for the portions you get. I like their to-go containers too because they have holes on the corners so the food isn’t soggy by the time you get home. I thought I would have to re-heat the food at home(about a 30 – 40 mins drive for me). But I got home and the food was still hot & crunchy! So yay for me. No time wasted… dug right in and went to town. I think I found my fish n chips place!

Fresh, light fried fish. Small, manageable menu. The fish sandwich is very good. So is the fried zucchini. The owner(I assume he is the owner because he is always behind the register) is very friendly. Prices are reasonable. Plenty of parking. With all that said, I rarely eat here. Why, you ask? Because of the darn hours! This place closes at 8 pm*,(and is not open on Sunday) which is just too early. By the time my boyfriend and I both get home from work, change out of work clothes, walk the dog, and then decide on dinner, Mr. Fish and Chips is ruled out because it’s either closed or closing within 15 minutes. *In looking up the hours, I am seeing that they are now open until 8:30 Mon-Thurs and 9:00 on Friday and Saturday… is this new? Or do they always close early? Anyway, the ambiance is just okay — this is a place for the food, not the dining experience. But, with the good, surprisingly fresh and light food, this is a solid four star place.

I absolutely love this place. I can’t recommend anything other than the fish and chips because that’s all I order here but the other items I have seen come or look amazing. I can’t get enough.

Great little shop that’s hidden in Clairemont. I like the light breading on the fish and even though it’s deep fried, it’s not heavy. I ordered 1 pc fish & some clams, it was DELICIOUS!

First time here drove by many times. Well me and wife decided to try it out. We both enjoyed it very much. The fish was very light and crispy and the fries are tasty we will be back to try other foods they have. Only thing I didn’t like was caned drinks I’m a refill type of person.

Fried scallops sound kind of nasty, but thank you Mr Fish and Chips for showing me the light! YUMMMMM! I like to get the seafood combo — it includes fish, shrimp, and scallops, that way you can try a little of everything. If you dine in, they bring you a whole tray of condiments to help you customize your fried delicacies. Everyone who works there is always very, very friendly and sweet. Sometimes there is limited seating, though, so I usually order to go.

I ordered the 2 piece fish and chip combo, which I got with a side of fries and cole slaw. The fish had a unique tempura batter, which I really liked. They provide sides of malt vinegar, cocktail sauce, tartar sauce and a VERYGOOD sriracha sauce. I would definitely come back again.

The owners are the greatest people. This is down the street from my house, so whenever I need a fish n chips fix, it’s readily accessible. My family has been eating here for years, you can feed a family of 3 or 4 for under $ 20! They recently got a square reader so you can use credit/debit cards now.

Was craving for some clam chowder so I decided to check out this place for the first time. I ordered the lunch special of clam chowder, fries, cole slaw and a drink for either $ 6 or $ 7.99. My boyfriend got their fish and chips with two pieces of chicken strips. I was surprised that they chicken strips at a fish & chips place. My cup of clam chowder was very filling that I barely only had only a couple of fries along with my meal. This was a very casual and laid back dining establishment. We waited about 10 – 15 mins for our meal. I will return to this place if I’m ever craving for clam chowder again.

I really wanted to like this place based on all the great Unilocal reviews however that was not the case. I ordered the seafood platter which consisted of one piece of fish 5 scallops and one large butterfly shrimp. I ordered an additional piece of fish for my husband since he is allergic to shellfish. It took awhile to receive our order however when it came the cashier opened the box to show us the items which included both pieces of fish in with the seafood. I explained my husband was allergic to shellfish and needed to have his fish separated from the seafood. She explained to me that all the food is fried in the same oil therefore the fish would be tainted with seafood. I asked for a refund for the additional piece of fish however instead they accidentally refunded my entire order which I had to repurchase. I was excited to dive into my seafood platter instead I was quickly disappointed on the first bite. There was absolutely no seasoning, no salt, no black pepper NOTHING. All I tasted was greasy, bland scallops, fish, and shrimp. The most flavorful item was a side of potato salad which they did not make, it came out of a container. I absolutely have no desire to venture into this establishment again.

Tonight my dinner was The Double Catch combo meal with 3 large shrimp, 1 fish fillet, zucchini, and a side salad with bleu cheese dressing. It was delicious. Contrary to what’s on Unilocal, and other review websites, they accept both cash and credit & debit cards.

Our favorite fish ‘n chips place went out of business so I set out on Unilocal to find a replacement. This place definitely didn’t disappoint! The fish portions were large and delicious. The batter didn’t have a lot of seasoning itself but once you add frech lemon juice and tartar sauce you would never notice. The hot sauce was ah-maz-ing, like a spicier sriracha! We had the onion rings and fried zucchini with our combos, also very delicious. We also opted for the side salads instead of the cole slaw. All in all it was a well priced, very filling meal. We will most definitely be back!

I’ve been coming here for years and it was not good when they were closed due to the fire. I have always enjoyed this place and the fish is never greasy nor are the fries. I don’t do zucchini but their onion rings are great also. It’s a good value for the money, fast, and most of all, it’s good.

«We’re all stories, in the end. Just make it a good one, eh?» Dr. Who I read about Mr. Fish and Chips on Kirk’s mmm-yoyo blog. Place has delicious fryer aroma. A light tempura type batter gives the food good crunch and a mild fried flavor without hiding the underlying flavors. Fresh cod is the only fried fish choice. Has a nice mild flavor and is juicy inside. Onion rings have a rich fried onion flavor. Zucchini gushes juices with every bite. Big pieces of zucchini have bold zucchini flavor. I think the onion rings are my fav dish here. One of these days I’ll have to try the fried shrimp. It was a dark time when this place closed for almost a year due to a fire. I had to go to overpriced fish and chip places till they reopened. When they reopened I noticed the British Pub type décor matching the food. Fancy outdoor dining area looks like a great spot to eat under the stars in the summer. Luckily the prices haven’t gone up. :-) The owner is nice and the filtered water taste better than the previous water which tasted like tap water.

I came here one night because I needed to indulge in my pregnancy craving of fish and onion rings(in this case). The prices here are almost too good. Anytime I see beer under $ 4.00 is fantastic. I ordered the Mr. Fish and chips combo with Cole slaw and onion rings and my boyfriend got the first fillets. We spent under $ 20.00 and left more than satisfied. There was about a ten minute wait. It was packed when we got there and they were also doing take out. For having only three people working I was impressed. The food was really good it wasn’t too breaded nor greasy. The owner checked on us a couple times and thankfully every condiment was already on the table. The people working here seemed to know their regulars really well and they made everyone feel welcomed. I will definitely be returning to this establishment.

To be honest, this is the only fish n chips place that I’ve been to in San Diego county. Thus, I can’t compare it to any other places that also sell fish n chips. Yet, I’m giving this place 5 stars because their fish is big and very satisfying! Their tartar sauce is also delicious. Of course it’s always best to eat when it’s still fresh especially because of the batter. Yum!!! Now they also accept credit cards, which is a big plus point :-)

Mr. Fish & Chips Meal +Fried Mushrooms w/cole slaw Dropped by after work. Decided to try their bread and butter so i ordered their fish and chips meal and added a side of fried mushrooms. Its a lot of food. The fish was delicious with a nice crispy batter. The fries were not so fresh, wish they were made to order. The coleslaw was good. But the Fried Mushrooms though. The moment you pop one of these in your mouth be prepared to get hit with a –where have you been all my life explosion– careful, theyre pretty hot so dont burn yourself. We came to San Diego to watch the Raiders Chargers game. I looked up seafood and this place popped up. When you see that it’s a storefront shop, you start thinking, ‘could this be the place?’ Then you taste it and yep, that’s it. I ordered the Mr. Fish & Chips combo with a side salad. The salad was simple; lettuce, tomato and carrots. Oh yeah a couple of cucumbers. The fish and chips were really good. Not a strong fish taste and the batter was just right. The fries were okay, but again, I’m not a fries guy. Now let’s talk about the service! It was awesome. The guy at the counter was extremely personable and friendly to everyone that came in. This was a really good choice

Without question the best place in the county for fish and chips. I prefer the zucchini strips and chips mom likes onion rings and fish. Prices are reasonable for what you get. Deep fried foods by nature are not the healthiest choice to make, but when the craving is irresistible this place is the winner.

Where’s the fried clams plate? Well they have clam strips on one of the combos and I screwed up my order. Got the combo plate with fish, jumbo shrimp, scallops, fries and salad. Everything’s pretty good, but could be better. Mainly would like to see different fish options and fried clams. The batter on all these are fresh, light and crunchy. The seafood is good, but nothing memorable to touch upon. Fries are pretty good and I liked them giving a salad option. I’m interested to come back for the clam strips and chowder. I love fried seafood and this is a good place. Reasonable prices from a nice family run spot. This is one of the better options in the area. Would like to see them add more options to their menu and get some hot sauce in here.

If you are looking for classic breaded fish, oyster, chicken, shrimp or clams Mr Fish is the way to go. The onion rings are the perfect combo of crunch and chew. It’s greasy but all the better in fried food. They give you squeeze bottles of tartar sauce, ranch, cocktail sauce, and malt vinegar. The clam chowder is homemade.

My friend Wendy wanted to meet up last night to celebrate both our recent birthdays, and as she found out, I had never been to Mr. Fish And Chips. This little seafood spot is in the same mall that houses Pieology, Chicken Charlie’s, and 85C… as such, parking can be a bit tight, but the food is worth it! We both ordered the Seafood Combo($ 11.99); this is a rather large piece of fish, five scallops, and a jumbo butterflied shrimp with your choice of salad(we opted for cole slaw) and sides(we got the fried zucchini — French fries or onion rings are also an option). I loved the tempura-style batter that coated our dinner; while crispy, it wasn’t even oily at all. The scallops were quite huge, the shrimp was tasty, and the fish was definitely on point. There’s also plenty of sauce options to help go with your meal, such as tartar and cocktail. Like my fellow Unilocalers noted, it does take a while for your order to arrive, as it’s being cooked fresh, so a tad bit of patience is to be expected. Also, drinks are either in a can or in Snapple bottles; no self-serve fountain here(not that there’s any room for it… Mr. Fish And Chips is a bit on the small side, even with the outdoor patio). Service was polite and friendly — Wendy was surprised that her card was already on file(which also shows how much of a regular she is at the restaurant). There was smooth jazz being streamed inside the dining area, and we were both surprised at how we lucked out getting seats inside, as more people came in as the night went on. Although the price point may be a bit high, you’re definitely paying for quality at Mr. Fish And Chips.(Speaking of paying… contrary to some Unilocal reviews, the place does accept credit/debit cards.) And seeing how Wendy told me that their clam strips, hush puppies, and fried mushrooms are worth trying out, I can see myself coming back here a bit more often after work.

Pretty good if you’re in the mood for fish & chips the food here hits the spot. I ended up getting the chicken strips & fish combo since they didn’t have a variety of fish here(only Cod). The chicken strips were juicy & flavorful, & they even have BBQ dipping sauce, the fish was solid as well. They accept credit cards with an iPad app now.

Their fish, fried in beer batter is fair to average. The jumbo shrimp taste even better. The ‘chips’ are frozen and wiggly, not very crisp. I like them crispy, not wiggly. Their cooked to order fish and shrimps come out super-crisp, very tender and hot. And those stood up well to any sogginess you would expect for a take-out order. You can’t expect much from frozen French fries(chips) :/ You can get 1,2,3 or 4 pieces of fish separately. They come with fries, fried onion rings, or fried zucchini. Ask about their combos and substitutions, because they won’t offer them unless you’re in the know about it, which isn’t very helpful. The people who work here are average in friendliness because it varies on every visit. Non consistent. One minor thing that was a disappointment to me was there was no lemon in my first to-go order. I would’ve appreciated a lemon wedge tucked in with the fish, and since then, have had to ask for one every time I go here. I kind of expected lemon for anything seafood. They are average as can be, but I think there are better options. I’ve been here at least a dozen times.

Well, after some moderate beer drinking in the San Diego area. We decided to head here since it was close and that it was one of those quick dining places. Quite honestly, I was not in the mood for waiting anywhere again after going to a brewery with only 1 person working. Coming here, we for sure wanted to try their fish and chips. We got the 2 piece fish and chips around $ 9 that came with the side. We tried the mac salad as well as the cole slaw. We also tried a 4 piece fried scallop. The fish and chips are above average, so was the cole slaw. You can taste that it was quite fresh and made to order. The wife that works here take your order and the husband brings it out along with a try of condiments that has malt vinegar, tarter sauce, ketchup, cocktail sauce. Yes it was a lot of sauces and all were cold as they came from a fridge.(Just the way I like it) The fish is crunchy, long strips and you can actually see the fish. The fries are just normal fries but they don’t over salt them. The cole saw here is chopped thicker than I like it but has the right amount of mayo that you don’t feel gross. You should pass on the mac salad. For me, that didn’t taste fresh and the fried scallops just tasted like a fried item but I couldn’t tell what. The owner was sweet, she gave our kids some treats after they had finished their dinner. Total hole in the wall feel to this establishment. So a 4.5 star feel rounded up to 5.

I looooove cheap seafood!!! Most of their meals here are all under $ 12 which is extremely affordable when it comes to seafood. Be aware that 90% of their menu items here are all deep fried!!! SETTING: The place seems to be a family owned restaurant. Very friendly and talkative male owner who also worked the register. The restaurant itself is very small. There’s about 5 – 6 tables inside and 2 – 3 tables outside. Not the best for large parties. Food: + Mr Fish & Chips Combo $ 8.99 (Includes two fish fillet, choice of side and salad or coleslaw) I chose fried zucchini and salad for my sides. The fish was delicious. It was moist and not dry. The batter was light and crispy. The same batter was used for the fried zucchini. It was a generous portion that definitely filled me up. As for the salad, it was just your basic cesar salad. + Shellfish Combo $ 11.99 (Inlcudes 1 jumbo shrimp, 1 oyster, 2 scallops, 1 clamp strip, with choice of side and salad/coleslaw) I personally think that this is a pretty good deal. You get a little taste for everything all for one low price. The french fries are the fat cut ones and were decent. The coleslaw is pretty good. + 8 Piece Fried Oysters $ 7.90 The fried oyster batter was the same batter that they used for the huspuppies. I would’ve prefer the lighter crispy battery that was used for the rest of the seafood. The batter was slightly over fried and hard. The oysters were small but they were still good. + Hushpuppies(Regular Size) $ 2.99 The huspuppies seemed a little bit over fried because the outside layer was dark and extra crispy. But the inside was soft. The hushpuppies were well seasoned. They offered honey as a dipping sauce which i’ve never seen before but goes great together. I also really liked that they offered many different sauces to eat with your food, they had: Ranch, Tartar Sauce, Cocktail Sauce, Hot Sauce, and Vinegar. Overall, I would definitely like to try to come back here again and try other things.

A friend and I went to Mr. Fish and Chips(MFC) for lunch recently because we were craving legit fish and tasty fries. I had read pretty good reviews of this place via Unilocal and it wasn’t too far from where we worked. I had been in the plaza where MFC is located, but never even noticed it was there — I never make it to the VONS side because if I’m ever in this plaza, it’s to visit 85 Degrees Bakery and Café. Good to know that this place exists! The owner – who informed us that he’s the third-generation owner of the place – was friendly nd showed my friend and me photos of the various dishes offered on an iPad while we perused the menu, located overhead. Sicne we got to the eatery soon after they opened at 11 a.m., it was pretty empty, save for one other diner. The menu was liminted in selection, but that made the choices easier. Note: If you like soda, go with the«Lunch Special» option because you get a good sampler and save a bit on costs. If I drank soda, I would have gotten this option. After some deliberation, my friend and I put in our to-go orders and the owner proceeded to tell us more about the business since we were one of the only customers there — how they have been in business since 1969, how there are only a few fish ‘n chip places in San Diego and how they really take pride in their business. It’s always fun to run into mom-and-pop shops like these with so much history. Overall verdict: I thought the fish and chips from this place could be more flavorful, and they could have benefitted from additional salt and seasoning. While I appreciate that the fries were thick – I prefer thick, steak-like fries as opposed to crispy, skinny fries – and there was sufficient batter on the fish, the entrée itself tasted rather bland. I was grateful for the opportunity to try MFC, but I’m not sure if I would return. After my meal, I had yet to satisfy my craving for seasoned fries and buttery, salted cod. The fish ‘n chips were not at all bad … I think they just would have tasted better and been more memorable with a lot more seasoning. Here’s what we got: «Fish Sandwich»: This sandwich came with tomatoes and lettuce inside a French roll. Though my friend’s a huge fan of fish sandwiches in general, she agreed with me about the bland taste of the fish. She was pretty disappointed, saying she would have to take me to Shakespeare’s in Downtown to experience a legit fish and chips entrée. «2 Fish + 1 Side»: It’s always a bummer for me when fries aren’t included with the fish – it’s called fish ‘n chips for a reason – but I wanted the full experience so I added a side of fries to my two-piece fish. Though I did appreciate the crispy, flaky exterior of the fish and the tender interior – as well as the thicker consistency of the fries – a little more flavor and seasoning would have gone a long way to make this entrée better. I should have added more malt vinegar/sea salt to my entrée, but I didn’t want my meal to be soggy by the time I got back to work. The fish and chips itself weren’t bad … it could have been worse. It just would have been tons better with more flavor. «Hush Puppies/Onion Rings»: I debated getting one of these sides with my fish instead, but for my first fish and chips dish, I wanted the«traditional» version. If I ever do return to MFC again, I would want to try one of these sides and see if they make my entrée any better. «Lunch Special»: If you’re at MFC from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., I definitely recommend getting this combo to save a little bit of money and get a good sampler. The fish fillet option comes with a piece of fish, your choice of side, salad/coleslaw and a drink. I was interested in trying the«Seafood Salad,» since I’m not a huge fan of slaw, but I didn’t really want anything from the beverage/soda menu so I passed on this combo. Still, it’s a great deal and you get to try a little bit of everything when you opt for this. And the best part — the side(fries, onion rings, etc.) are included in the price, so you don’t have to get it a la carte.

Lunch combo specials with options. I got a fish sandwich with a side of zucchini and a small cole slaw. The combo includes a chilled soda can and a styrofoam cup of that crunchable ice. No fountain soda machine here. You can pay the up-charge if you want to substitute mushrooms as a side or get a beer instead of a soft drink. It’s still Cash Only, and there’s a couple of ATMs nearby, or use the cash back if you buy a bigger drink from Vons. I noticed the cashier let a guy put in an order and pay later when he returned to pick up the food. Kudos for that. I guess the place was temporarily closed because of a fire? I’m not sure of the details; just reading a few more reviews while waiting for lunch to be prepared. Cozy interior with cute London themed decals and a wall mounted marlin. I don’t mind waiting a few more minutes and it’s nice knowing they’re cooking to order instead of grabbing stuff from under the heat lamp. Lunch was ample and it wasn’t greasy or have a weird aftertaste like other places that need to swap out the fryer oil. The sandwich had a nicely battered piece of fish, although this portion is snack-sized compared to the giant filet I had from Chef John’s Fish & Chips last week. The lunch order also included 4 planks of fresh battered zucchini and a small styro cup of cole slaw. I only needed a few dashes of salt to season the zucchini. I probably should’ve ordered their standard fish & chips to compare it evenly with Chef John’s. I do like both places for their own reasons and I will return to Mr. Fish & Chips again to try a seafood combo and sample more oceanic critters and other goodies.
