MR Master Mechanics

I was referred to MR Master Mechanics by a friend a few years ago and glad I remembered the name due to my recent car issue. I was running errands in Mira Mesa and my car began to overheat. I immediately pulled over and noticed coolant spewing out from under my car. My Infiniti has never had any major issues since ownership but with 113,000 miles, something was bound to happen. It was already late in the day so I called MR Master Mechanics. They said they were fully booked but would take my car and work in between jobs. I had it towed to the shop the next day and they were able to take my car in due to a few cancellations. They identified a cracked radiator so they had it replaced. The car was still overheating and the root issue turned out to be a bad thermostat. The thermostat was replaced and the car was running back to normal. MR Master Mechanics called me to update me on the diagnosis and to get my approval on the work needed to get done.
When I picked up my car, the mechanic Phil walked me through what was done as well as show me the other areas of the car that needed immediate attention. It turns out my wheels alignment are off which are causing the inner tire to wear unevenly. Now I have an appointment for a new set of tires and a 4 wheel alignment.

These guys were great for confirming another mechanic’s claims: realistic and truthful.
I didn’t know what to think about these guys for a while. I usually go here for oil changes because of the high ratings. After today, though, I give 5 stars. In the beginning, I kept asking about my tires and they always said it was fine and I never knew if they were actually checking everything b/​c my tires would always squeal more than usual and after the oil changes, my car felt bumpy. So I didn’t know what to make of it, but after having my car serviced at others, comparing it with how my car felt after those services — although still a little more bumpy/​hard shocks feeling– I don’t know why — and after today, I feel much better about them. I came in to have my transmission fluid checked and tires checked. They gave me a very honest opinion– no sales persona and did it really fast and for no charge and this time, something was wrong with my tires. I was really happy with how they explained it to me and felt I should’ve tipped since they didn’t charge me and I didn’t come in with anything else to charge this time. (Some day, when I can keep $ in my wallet again, I’ll be able to start tipping again haha :/.)

A third time visiting the shop with great experience. Car wouldn’t start with a couple of error codes. First an engine sensor wasn’t giving any readings. Then the fuel pump was found to be totally dead. Hao tackled the problems one by one and explained things in details.

Brought my truck in for an oil leak and some shaking. The guys diagnosed to problem quickly and were kind enough to stick around a few minutes after closing to wait for me to come pick it up the same day.

According to the dealership on multiple occasions, they had suggested that I replaced my brakes. By the mileage on my car, I figured it must be time for new brakes. Brought it in to Hao twice for other maintenance and at both times, he told me that I still have enough pads on my brakes and that it wasn’t necessary to replace yet. I honestly didn’t think I need to have it replace yet either, but figured what do I know? I am happy that MR Mechanic was honest and didn’t try rip me off. I am highly recommending all of my friends here due to their great and honest business. Service was completed in a timely matter, good communication, and decent rates.

This place has reliable mechanics. Me and my friends go to Alex. He is simply the best. He has fixed minor issues such as fixing a tail light to other bigger issues. I find him trustworthy and reasonable.

I’ve had a number of good experiences with guys, most recently for an airbag light. They were able to get me in on short notice, and they credited the cost of diagnosing the problem toward the labor of replacing the part, which I thought was remarkably fair of them. They’re very reasonably priced, and transparent in the work they do, as well as explaining everything. I’ll definitely be taking my car in to be serviced with them again :)

Another late review — About a month ago I had my car acting up on turns, with ABS starting to kick in and some loss of steering control. Scheduled an appointment with Hao, and dropped the car next morning. Even though we suspected the brakes initially, it turned out to be worn-​out bearings on one of the front wheel. Hao kept me updated throughout the diagnostics process, provided accurate estimates, and had it fixed by late afternoon. Another great job! Thanks Hao.

These guys are awesome! They not only fixed my car, but the price was honest and I didn’t feel hassled. I also was able to use their wifi connection as well.

My car had a check engine light, wasn’t sure what the problem was so I brought the vehicle in for a diagnostic. Hao ran diagnostics for my vehicle the entire day, wasn’t able to find anything wrong with it so ended up not charging me a dime for the diagnostics despite me insisting. Excellent and honest mechanic, would highly recommend and will definitely be coming back for all of my auto mechanic needs.

I come here every time for my oil change! These guys are great! I always ask them to put some air in my tires and they are always happy to do that!

I am happy with the service I received from MR Master. They delivered on their promise of same day turnaround and it was even done a little sooner than I thought it would be. Super upfront with labor rate (which is very reasonable) and in the end I paid a little less than I thought I would – and a LOT less than what you would pay at a dealership. Thanks!

I had my rear brake pads and rotors replaced here. The entire staff was courteous and they did the job quickly and correctly. Their prices are also very reasonable.

Good mechanics for foreign cars. It’s out of my way but I’ll make the trip for good service.

I will be taking my car here for a long time. Very honest with me, pointed out problems with my car that they don’t even do and told me to save my money on service I thought I needed.

I came here for my 40,000 mile service. They beat the dealership price by $ 300, the service was quick and they were up front, timely, honest and quick to communicate. I will return.

We came in asking for a second opinion on a large job, they did a thorough examination and gave us the truth. The damage wasn’t nearly as bad as the other shop had made it seem. They gave us two options and didn’t pressure us at all to choose quickly. Their prices were significantly less than the other shop as well.
We will definitely be using these guys in the future and recommending them to all we know!

When I lived in San Diego I wouldn’t let any other shop touch my car.

I don’t know how this place got a 5 Star rating! I like Unilocal and took my car here. It needed a new transmission. They sent it to a mechanic in National City. It took a month and came in $ 300 over estimate. The kid told me he didn’t understand transmissions enough to explain why it cost more. Two months later and with a 12 month guarantee on the transmission, my car seems okay.
The reason I’m giving One star – there are Master Mechanic certifications all over the office but that mechanic was never there all the times I visited. It’s just two young kids that aren’t very way less than «master» mechanics. After they got the transmission in they called and told me I needed an alternator. I said okay and let them replace it, adding another $ 200 to my bill. As it turns out when I picked up my car they had left my ignition in the «on» position, which would drain the battery. (It’s an older car so it can go into the on position without the key) — I doubt I really needed that alternator– they had probably just left my ignition switch on.
Next…they told me they needed about $ 300 more because I needed a starter. After one month without my car and all these «added on» repairs and money I said No! After over two months of driving my car every day it has not had a «non start» situation! I don’t know if these guys are taught to add unneeded repairs or if they are super inexperienced but this place does NOT deserve a 5 star rating!!!

I literally just got my seat belt fixed here and came out very satisfied. 185 for the part and 85 for the service fee. Total was 288 and something cents. The part is the same pretty much anywhere in SD but 5 dollars less service fee wise.
Vu was the one who took my first few calls as I was checking out prices and also the one that fixed my seat belt when I went into the auto shop. The process was under an hour and the least hassle I’ve dealt with at a shop in awhile. I went to the appointment thinking it would take longer and that I might need to take a nap but sadly, Vu did his job too well and now I’m back at work still sleepy and writing this review.
The shop itself is the easiest to access on Mira Mar and the guys working there are really friendly. I definitely suggest to anyone that needs the services that they offer to give them a call.
