Nelsonbuilt recently helped me with a kitchen drawers rebuild and soft glide installation for a condo of mine in Golden Hill.
Matt and his team are true professionals. They take their trade seriously and made sure the job was done right — even in the face of a tricky situation where we were installing custom built drawers into the framework of older existing cabinets — they got it done with quality and on time.

Working with Matt of Nelsonbuilt was a pleasure! He listened to what we had in mind, and gave us exactly what we wanted! He is a creative craftsman that can be trusted with any job. We used him for a small project, however with his being so very capable, we know that we will use him for any woodwork that we do in the future, and felt compelled to write to tell others of our wonderful experience.

I initially contacted Matt and another general contracting company in late June to give my wife and I a quote on a bunch of work to the home we just purchased. It took a while (2 weeks) for both Matt and the other company to get all the numbers lined up, but we eventually got everything on paper. The other company made several glaring mistakes/​omissions in their quote, whereas Matt’s was comprehensive and had nearly everything I requested down to the «T». The only thing I wish he had done was itemize the quote so I could see what labor cost vs. materials. A few items seemed like they were priced a bit high (when I did some initial estimates from Home Depot & Lowes), but the other company’s quote came in even higher. Given Matt’s personality, professionalism, and what seemed like a forthright nature, we decided to give him the job.
We asked to start the job on 24 July and hoped to be able to move into the house by 5 August. It was a very ambitious schedule, but Matt did his best to line everything up to make it work. Here’s what was on our remodel list:
— Half of the downstairs was carpet and half was a light tan hardwood. We wanted to remove the carpet, add matching planks of wood, and sand everything down to remove the light finish. Then we wanted to stain a darker color.
— Repaint 80% of the house and all bathrooms
— Strip old color off of banister and stain to match the floors.
— Recarpet stairs and everything upstairs.
— Refinish all kitchen cabinets (about 34 doors, 10 drawers, island, etc.). The were originally a light tan and we wanted to paint them an off-​white color.
— Remove stone flooring in bathroom and replace with travertine.
— Add ceiling fans to all bedrooms (no existing J-​boxes so some drywall patching was necessary after this was done).
Matt used Tommy Bednash from Factory Direct Floor Store (his sanding & finishing crew — Steve and Greg — was terrific) for the hardwood. He used Keith and company from Fairwind Inc for painting & cabinets, again a great crew. For carpeting and tile he used a sub named Jay who was quick and polite and did a solid job. For electrical he used Jason from Correia Electric who was good.
Outcome: hardwood, banister, and cabinets, we were FLOORED with the quality of work. Painting was solid, a few «holidays» here and there but a phone call to Matt was all it took to have things patched up. Electrical was good, but a couple ceiling fans have a buzzing sound; the electrician came back to check wiring and said everything was OK, so that leaves us with exchanging the fans at the store. Tile and carpet, very good work.
There was a mixup during the job and we thought there might have been a situation with access to the house, so Matt came right out (at 7:30PM!) to change every lock on the doors to keep things safe. He was in constant contact either via phone, email, or text and never seemed to get upset with all my nit-​picky questions. Was on-​site nearly every day or two to check up on the subs, but for the most part he probably didn’t need to. It seems he works with these guys often so they work well as a team. There was one small (2-​day) hiccup with the job so we didn’t make it in the house by the 5^th, but given our two-​week window we couldn’t be happier with how things turned out.
Again, not the cheapest contractor out there, and definitely no contractor is as cheap as when you manage things yourself. But since I was in the middle of planning a move I didn’t want to manage a remodel at the same time. And to know Matt had things under control was great. Once I recover from the cost of this remodel we’re going to use Matt again for some bathroom upgrades!

I called Matt in to quote me for a rafter sistering job and he wound up saving me tons of cash by suggesting that my roofers complete the project. He even spoke directly with them despite cutting himself entirely from the project. All I can say is kudos to his ethics. He has also gained future business from me.

Not only did Matt remodel my entire house but he has come back and added his touch to the cabinetry to rest of the house. He custom built a cabinet for our bathroom and just finished a complete overhaul of my kitchen cabinets. I have recommend him to friends and neighbors and everyone that uses him loves him. I look forward to my next project so we can get Matt involved. He has great insight and always goes the extra mile.

Matt did a great job solving and resolving many of the headaches around my home. He is especially adept at finished carpentry, but was capable of fixing many other problematic areas. Tidy and on time, he was also very fair and felt he was looking to provide excellent customer service instead of making the most money for himself.

Nelsonbuilt, Matt Nelson, is absolutely awesome. Over the past several years at our Mission Hills home, Matt has built a multi-​level deck complete with pergola, built-​in bbq, and furniture using the beautiful Indonesian hardwood mangaris. That project led to a complete bathroom and kitchen remodel that is perfectly in tune with the Craftsmen style of our home. His built-​in wine cabinet looks like an original part of the house. Matt’s stellar work ethic combines efficiency and neatness, with a meticulous and friendly nature that makes collaboration with him and his workers a complete pleasure.
