New China Bakery

Omg I wish someone told me that there was a new owner… drove around for awhile until we found this place… cake was not that great…

I am NEVER going back here. First off, it feels old, dirty and dusty inside. I recently ordered a cake here and regretted it. I placed my order over a week ahead of time. I paid a portion and came back a day or so later to pay the rest (it’s cash only). The older lady who helped me said she would remember that I paid but I made sure to write «paid» on the receipts. I also confirmed the delivery time and location.
Then, the night before the party as I was in my kitchen making favors, I get a call from New China Bakery asking me to come in and pay. After being yelled at and hung up on, I stopped what I was doing to go over there. When i got there, she says everything is fine now. She then explains that it was MY fault because I wrote paid in the wrong section on the receipt… the man behind the counter insisted everything’s fine. Then I ask about delivery, and he asks if I can have someone pick it up. What?! I paid for delivery. He checks the receipt and agrees.
The day of my baby’s 1^st birthday, the cake wasn’t the flavor I ordered!
I go in the Monday after to complain, and all I got was a list of excuses and No apology. NEVER Going back. I don’t need the stress! …and neither do you.

I had two big-​big cookies. I broke ‘em all up so I could share with my family. Everybody at my house including myself loved loved loved the cookies!!! NEW CHINA BAKERY!!! YAY!!! WE GOT A GREAT BAKERY IN DA NEIGHBORHOOD!!!

Great place to get birthday cakes and fruit tarts!
The staff is super friendly and would go out of their way to please you!

Got my wedding cake here, as well as an assortment of desserts for our dessert table. Cake was good, decorated just the way we had asked, and was super reasonably priced. 3-​tier cake (was enough for probably at least 120 people) was only $ 300. You can supply the flowers yourself (which I did) or they can get for you (for about $ 100). I recommend you get the flowers from a wholesaler (like Wholesale Flowers and Supplies or San Diego Wholesale Flowers) and drop them off a few days before your wedding. For desserts, I got cheesecake, cream puffs, fruit tarts, and chocolate dipped strawberries. Very reasonably priced as well and one guest said the fruit tarts were some of the best he had ever had. Would definitely buy from here again.

I think there’s not that many reviews for this place because most of the people who come here are old asian parents… I’ve never been here myself, but I love it when my mom gets my birthday cake from here :) The cake here is fruit filled and airy and the frosting is not too sweet (unlike the ones from American stores). I guess the closest equivalent is chiffon cake and whipped cream frosting. Anyways, like I said, never been in the store myself but I’m always trying to convince my moms to go. I took off one star because one time the cake was kinda dry… but I think it’s because we didn’t pre-​order and they just gave us a pre-​made cake.

To be fair, I stopped by as the store was winding down for the night. I was hoping to snag some Chinese pastries and not cake or cookies. Surprise, there were about three taro buns and two sun cakes.
Taro bun filling had the consistency of real taro. The bread itself was pretty bad. Sun cake innards were sweet and had some black egg in it. I wished I didn’t eat it.
Skip it.

I just moved to the San Diego area and was on a last minute search for a birthday cake for my boyfriend. I was literally up all night looking online for representable bakeries that I could pick up a cake that morning, not cost me and arm and a leg, and still taste wonderfully.
I decided to give New China Bakery a call quite early in the morning. One of the owners, the lady, had answered, and was so sweet and friendly. I told her what I was looking for, and that I needed it for that day and she told me to stop in.
When I arrived, I got greeted with a friendly smile and hello, and told her I had talked to her on the phone. She remembered and showed me the perfect size cake and I got an option to have chocolate covering the rim or not. Then she took it to the back and had it freshly decorated with chocolate covered strawberrys, more frosting, and had written what I asked for on the cake. I was also offered balloons and candles, which was nice, so then I didn’t have to go out of my way for those items.
She also managed to sell me a couple of amazing cookies, which i enjoyed every one of those large cookies to myself. There was also plenty other yummy looking baked goodies they had available, the fruit tarts looked amazing.
Overall great customer service, and needless to say the cake tastes AMAZING, the strawberrys filled in the cake does wonders to your taste buds. I will definately be returning, and want this same cake when my birthday arrives.

— cake is top with fruits & strawberries (yeah, they do use a lot of strawberries)
— you can also have your picture on your cake (still edible)
— rice krispie (HUGE that’s a plus)
— fruit tart
— butterfly cookie (Asian cookie)
All their cakes are filled with strawberries and you can also buy a slice of cake for around $ 3 something. They also sell balloons and other birthday stuff if you’re too lazy to go elsewhere. They also make wedding cakes!
Con:
— Pretty pricey for a cake though.

My idea of a Chinese bakery tends to include more than just cake and cookies. To me, a Chinese bakery means there is also an abundance of baked breads with various fillings as well and sadly, there is not one of these in sight here.
I walked in and was so disappointed — was really feeling like some pork sung buns, hot dog buns, etc — I gave it the once over and then started to walk out.
The lady behind the counter asked if she could help me – I said, no thank you! Don’t come here if you are looking for bready stuff. I can’t really talk about the cake since I didn’t have any.

The awesome thing about this bakery is that they make the most amazing chocolate Dulce de Leche cake I have ever had… this is also kind of weird, seeing as the best thing a Chinese bakery is making is a Mexican cake. Whatever, it works. I haven’t really tried anything else here, but I always ask for the aforementioned cake for my birthday.
