OMBAC – Over The Line Tournament

I’m pretty much a fan of any huge local event and OTL will provide some fun times! From the vendors to the team names, you’re have your share to eat and laugh as you watch plenty of people, young and old. and even older, get pretty trashed. I hear it gets crazy but I’ve never seen it get as wild as I hear it does, as if people are too busy reliving the past to realize OTL now, haha. Or maybe I just went during the eye of the storm so to speak: p I feel the place could be made a bit more fun for those just coming to drink, I understand it’s a tournament, but the way OTL gets labeled. I would expect something a bit more to how do i say it. encourage wild times. Either way, OTL is truly a great event to go to. I don’t suggest bringing anyone under 21 because they won’t be able to fully experience OTL, but I do suggest getting there early!

OTL two words come to mind «Good times»! If you are a native you understand the full scope of what this tournament means to San Diegans! It’s kinda like an underground Madi gra party that not everyone knows about! I have lived here all my life and I still come across people that have never been!
If you are a sensitive female who is easily offended don’t come. If you have a sense of humor and can drink with the best of them this your spot!
Let me break it down for ya:
The games are fun to watch but if you want to see great athletes then come on the 2^nd weekend and watch the finals!
Beer on the beach in SD is a memory of the past! But not during OTL so bring a cooler or a wagon to drag your cooler from court to court!
Do not bring: babies, children, dogs, bikes, glass bottles or a bad attitude!
Do bring: sunscreen, chair, hat, booze and cash!
I played for 4 yrs and it’s a fun great way get out, meet some peeps and enjoy our beautiful city!

61 years and OMBACs Over the line tournament is still on a roll… this is the kind if event you either love it or hate it. Lets just say that you need to be thick skinned to enjoy. It’s said to be a kind of Mardi gras on the sand… but with a twist. So here it goes… thousands of people from all walks of life, different shapes and sizes (I’ve heard 30– 50 thousand people) flock to Fiesta Island all seeking one thing… a good time!!!
Where else can you enjoy San Diego’s beautiful bay, weather and enjoy a cold beverage for two weekends straight? The tournament consist of multiple division women and men’s teams trying to win the championship for bragging rights. I won’t bore you with the rules and how the game is played. Because in all honesty you won’t really understand until you see it live. The game is simple, easy to learn but difficult to perfect if you really want to compete at a higher level.
Here are a few reasons why I love it.
1. Beer! I’m old enough to remember what is was like to drink on the beach or bay here in SD. So this event is a yearly treat.
2. Visual stimulation… half of the fun is the people watching. Some of it can a little raunchy.
3. The camaraderie… friends and family get together to have a good time while making new friends.
4. the actual tournament it self… who doesn’t like a little friendly banter and competition?
5. Did I already say beer?!
But seriously OTL is an amazing event that I hope is here to stay. I recommend to at least go once in your life… I personally love it and look forward to participating every year.

OTL is for the people that love OTL. You don’t accidentally stumble upon it and it’s not something new so just saying you didn’t know what to expect is a bit like showing up at Mardi Gras and complaining about beads and saggy boobs, really? Are you new?
It’s a fun time to be had by all in one of the few remaining events at which you can bring your own alcohol, watch some amazing athletes, eat some good grub and have a great time meeting like minded fun folks. 61 years, 30 – 50,000 people a year, let’s keep it going San Diego. Oh, and the money raised supports Wheelchair Rugby, Toys for Tots, Pop Warner sports, Surfrider, Ronald McDonald House, SD Blood Bank and others?

I can’t say anything about the Tournament, but about the sorry excuse and mentally unstable employee that works there. Ed Teel. He is a bad reflection, on an otherwise interesting club. I am a student film maker who received permission to film on property not his own, but he insisted that he owned everything, was rude to me and my crew, professionals, and very disrespectful, yelling, and refusing to shake my hand. He went on and on, saying he owned everything, that he would sue us and made a problem out of nothing, that wasn’t his business. On top of that, he tried to step up and start a fight with one of my Producer’s for no reason! He just wanted to see what he can do to help, Ed yelled «You got a problem?» getting out of his car and stepping up to my Producer friend. Finally Ed left, but stalked us for 30 mins. Moving around the block and down the opposite alley turning his lights off and on. I nearly called the cops on him for harassment. He is truly an unstable man who wanted to start trouble and needed attention. Shame on you Old Mission Beach Athlectic Club. Find better employees to reflect your mission and fun club.

Boobs. Bats. Balls. Babes.
This is the mantra of OMBAC’s OTL Tournament.
And boy does it fit the bill!
Everywhere you look there are Over the Line Balls are flying and Babes with boobies on display.
Over the Line is a San Diego tradition, this year being the 60^th anniversary! Old Mission Beach Athletic Club started the «lazy man’s beach softball» way back with pictures where black and white and the babes wore «classy» one piece bathing suits.
Now; the same old men are running the show, once in their prime… but now just fun dirty old men looking at cute chicks and being funny!
Literal bus loads of people ascend on Fiesta Island. Why? Well this is the only time you can drink on the beach of course! If you don’t fancy LARGE crowds, DRUNK annoying people. stay home.
The game is simple, the team names are raunchy as they come and also highly creative, wild costumes are also a tradition at OTL!
The first Saturday of the event is the best, the Sunday and following weekend are for the serious players and Ms. Emerson contest.
Drinking, Sports, Jello Shots, Hot chicks, yummy food, party party party!
If you haven’t gone… Go!

No Babies (I recommend not children as well)
No Boas (snakes)
No bottles
Be careful passing out beers and jello shots; police are around and you can get caught serving a minor!
Parking is a nightmare; traffic is always bad.
Cops walk around frequently
Water, Shade, Sunscreen!

Good time. A lot of skin! Cute college girls in bikini, but also women not in their prime in bikini’s!

If you love the PB bar scene… you’ll like it here, too!
If you like to be around tons of people drinking… you’ll like it here.
And for everyone else, OTL may be a bit of a disappointment.
On the bright side, it can be really amusing to listen to all the team names as they’re called out.

Have a blast every year! The first weekend is the party weekend. A TON of people & everyone is having fun. Saturday is crazier than Sunday, but go either day.
The second weekend is for the more serious players. That’s when the teams that won the first weekend play against the defending champ teams.
I do NOT recommend you bring kids & they do NOT allow dogs (or any pets).
OMBAC gets a special permit for alcohol, but do NOT bring any glass bottles. There ARE cops there & you WILL get busted!
Part of the fun, as mentioed previously, is hearing the team names, so make sure to listen to the announcements, or buy a program!
Oh… and wear sunscreen, drink some water & bring a camera! :)

WOW, I can’t believe that no one has done a review for OTL. yet. For those of you who do not know what OTL is. It is a softball like game put on by OMBAC (Old Mission Bay Athletic Club) during the middle two weekends in July on Fiesta Island. Played with three people on a team. The object of the game is to hit the ball over a line and the opposing team must catch the ball giving you an out. The teams names can be pretty racy and are definitely R rated some even maybe even X rated. Sometimes you can’t help laugh out loud at some of the names when they announce them. Along with the tournament comes the party. While the teams are plying the spectators can wonder around Fiesta Island and drink and have a good time pretty much anything goes as long as you keep it some what under control. If you are going to go get there early they shut down the island to traffic at 9:30 a.m. and you will have to find parking off the island and use one of the shuttle busses or just walk all the way out there.

Good times. My favorite part is listening to the announcers call out the team names without cracking up.
