Went in on a Sunday afternoon with a large group and we might’ve overwhelmed them because they only had 2 people working but it was amazing! They were soo accommodative and sweet and the food was amazing! People had burgers and fries and tacos and everyone was completely satisfied! Totally unexpected. Casual order at the counter than sit down. Ambiance is of a typical hole in the wall type. Such yummy food though. Definitely try the carne asada fries!

Wow! Excellent juicy & well cooked burger. I’ve driven by this place many times & always been curious to try, my roommate suggested I stop by so I did. I phoned in an order, the Diablo burger and churro, upon arrival I was informed that they ran out of coconut for the churro so they comped the fried ice cream instead. That tells me that the owner(?) aims at keeping his customers happy. The Diablo: what can I say… nothing like a juicy burger to make me happy. The burger comes stuffed with cheese, bacon and jalapenos and topped with grilled onions, tomato, lettuce & an habanero ranch dressing. The patty was on point, cooked to perfection and juicy. While the owner warned me about it’s spiciness, I must say it was just perfect. I plan to stop by again & try the carne asada fries. My meal just made this the perfect Saturday!

Don’t judge a book by it’s cover… I love the food here! I only live 10 mins of walking distance from here and always passed by it and questioned it. Finally, one night a friend and I were in the mood to try something different and decided to finally give this place a chance. The inside is clean and very San Diegan. I ordered The Diablo Burger and my friend ordered some kind vegan/vegetarian taco. We both loved our food! I wouldn’t say the food was too pricy because the burgers were very, very filling and came along with fries. Since then, I’ve came here 3 more times and brought friends along and received the good experience that I had.

Food = 5 stars, Ambiance = 1 star We originally ordered our food for dine in, but as we were waiting for our food we realized that we wanted to take it to-go instead. It was cold, silent and the tables were sticky. There was no music playing, so it was really awkward being there. I felt like we needed to keep our voices down. It was just us, the cook and the girl at the register. who by the way thought it was appropriate to call her bank to take care of personal business while we were there. It was Friday evening and nobody else was in there, you would think this place would be a little more happening seeing all of the great reviews this place gets. Despite all that, the burgers are very good, this was our second time coming here. I had the El Diablo burger and he had the MidWestern Burger… we were really glad we made the last-minute decision to enjoy the food at home instead. I hope they make more of an effort to work on the ambiance, and really, they don’t have to do much! The food is on point. When I drive by a busy restaurant that I’ve never been to, I’d be more likely to want to try it… not everybody does Unilocal

I don’t eat meat, and I’m happy to report that there is lots for a vegetarian or a flexitarian or whatever the kids are calling them these days. Also, the owners were nice enough to do a fundraiser for the Sherman School garden, and served a wide selection of items off their fusion menu at the event. In one evening I tasted numerous apps including the Sweet Corn Hush Puppies and the Ricotta Herb Fish Fritters, as well as several of their non-meat tacos including the veggie, the vegan orange chicken and the vegan baja fish. Coated with coconut, the Sherman’s Shack signature churros(plural spelling???) were a revelation. I don’t treat myself to sugary fried desserts too often, so the SS churros are a huge treat. We’ve been here quite a bit and my kids have developed a habit for bean and cheese tacos, which is an off-the-menu selection. A favorite lunch entrée is the coconut or almond crusted fish filet served over a bed of salad. Healthy and tasty. A few other tidbits: I love the rack of hot sauces from all over the place. They really add zing to most dishes. Also, Sherman’s Shack hopes to get a liquor license. Beer and wine would go great with the menu.

We were going for Chinese but the place the we were going to, I had to veto, since it was more of a take out place. So since we were in the area, we wanted to try Sherman’s Shack. Now I am a tightwad who does not like to pay 10 bucks for a stinking burger. I sit here now at home in a burger coma. I will say it is the best burger I have ever had in San Diego. Stuffed burgers wtf not again. Every stuffed burger I have ever had reminds me of the burger Eddie Murphy’s mom made. Now this Turf and Turf burger was hands down«Epic» «Wicked» or whatever catch phrase you choose to use. Garlic shrimp, cream cheese, all stuffed inside of a burger, with a glaze of sweet and sour. Kill me now since I just came back from burger heaven. I am one to always bitch and cry about sub par fries. I was so not disappointed with their fries. Came out crisp and perfect. Yet the best option was getting my favorite glass bottle of Coke from Mexico. We will all be going back to the Shack fo sho!

Love this place! Fries are cooked perfectly every time! Burgers are big, juicy, and cooked to order. I haven’t tried everything on the menu but I haven’t been disappointed yet! Only negative would be the wait time! Order by phone, it will save you tons of time!

I love this place. The tacos and the SOSA fries are incredible, and you can’t beat the price. The neighborhood can be a bit sketch at time, but it’s worth it for the awesome food. Any of the tacos(all $ 2 or less) are a great choice, and I love that they have vegan options. They also have an entire wall of hot sauces to choose from. I wish their sodas were from fountain, not just a can, but I suppose you can’t have it all.

Hate to dock a star but it has to be done based on my visit last night! I was excited to not only visit Sherman shack again… but also take a friend who was in town. 1. We asked for water and it came out super warm from the tap. I’m not high maintenance where I need FUJI water only BUT at least give me some ice! «Running out» of ice is NO excused when your establishment is 1STEP away from a liquor store with a big ice container in the front. 2. My Bleu & Black burger was delicious stuffed with caramelized onions and blue cheese. However they literally put 4 small pieces of lettuce on it which was kind of a let down. I will be back but I will keep these things in mind… maybe bring my own ice haha.

Sherman’s Shack has nailed a pretty decent burger, but they sure aren’t going to win any awards for their chicken wings. The El Diablo Burger: Jalapeño, spiced Monterrey Jack cheese, bacon stuffed burger, topped with habanero ranch. So, that’s their thing here, stuffing the burgers. It works! In a city with so many great burgers, this place can compete on a certain level. It’s not a gourmet Starlite burger but it also isn’t a bare-bones Rocky’s burger either. It falls somewhere in between and at $ 10 a burger, it gets the job done for middle of the road. The wings: breaded, fried and topped with Thai chili sauce. Ugh, for a guy who loves wings I really wanted these to be good. They tasted recently frozen, pre-breaded, fried and drowned in sauce. They were butchered poorly and each one either had a broken bone of shards of bones. Will not order these again! Do I miss Urban Chicken? Yes I do, but this ain’t a bad replacement either — unless you order the chicken. Strange how that works.

Great tasting burgers and fries. Me and my friends split some jalopeno poopers and carne asada fries. All were very delicious and plentiful. I ordered the surf n turf burger for myself due to seeing the item on here from a fellow Unilocaler, and MAN it was big and tasty along with my tater tots.

A friend took us by this place on a random foodie adventure. What I ordered: Shack Burger 11 Bacon, caramelized onion, monteray cheese, jalapeño, mushroom stuffed burger topped with a egg The burger was well ok. I immediately took my egg off prior to taking a bite just a little weird but an easy fix. As I bit into the burger it was large and juicy but kinda tasted like it wasn’t fully cooked. Some people may like their burgers that way but I like mine well done. They had a cool selection of hot sauces but no mustard! The crinkle fries were good also. The wait was only about 10 minutes for the burger and fries. I like the concept of the stuffed burger but I felt like there was more patty than any stuffings. Anyhow, compared to other places I have had better so I will give this one 3 stars.

SOLID3.5STARS Stopped in with 5 friends and swamped the kitchen. Took forever to get our burgers. I had the Surf and Turf Burger and absolutely LOVED it. Was a little unsure of the orange glaze but it really compliments the burger! Others at the table enjoyed their Classic Burger and also the Black and Blue burger. A couple of our burgers were a bit undercooked… I’m sure because they were rushing to complete our ticket. We were a bit disappointed with the appetizers however. The Carne Asada fries were disappointing which we left ½ untouched. Rare since we have a «clean up crew» who finish our unfinished dishes. We also didn’t care for the Hush Puppies and the Fish Fritters. Stick with the burgers!

We happened across this little hole in the wall burger place, Unilocal averaged it 4 stars so we decided to give it a try. The restaurant is very small with only a few tables. The burgers are quite pricey, pretty much $ 10 or $ 11, and include fries. We ordered the Mid West which has pulled pork and burger with caramelized onions. Interestingly, the burger is a failed attempt at a juicy lucy. They«stuff» the pork inside the burger. I didn’t care for it. The burger was underdone, which for the nearly 20 minutes to get it seems amazing that it was not cooked properly.

I’ve driven by this place a million times and somehow never noticed that it’s not Urban Chicken anymore. We decided to try them out for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. We were the only people there, which I hope is not indicative of how business is going in general, because it was really pretty good. Lots of vegetarian options, including perfectly-done tofu tacos. The ingredients tasted incredibly fresh, way better than your average taco shop. Even the jalapeño poppers were homemade(and fantastic). Service was very friendly. They even brought out an extra veggie taco for us for free because they«made too much stuff». Sweet! I hope this place is doing well enough to stay in business. We will be back!

Do you want to try a new good food spot near downtown? Check out Sherman’s Shack off 25th and Market. For those of you who aren’t in the know, that’s Sherman Heights and it was well worth the drive. I got their hush puppies and El Diablo burger and it was all good in the hood. I grew up in this area and so I know this area is classic San Diego hood status. What that means is its a nice area with some nice homes and small homes and is 1 blocks from a police station. So does the area look like La Jolla? No, but this area is safe. There is no parking here but there should be plenty of street parking. That seems like a knock against the place but its in in a family neighborhood. Its right next to Golden Hill but in Sherman Heights and also close to the Trolley. If you want to treat your tongue and taste buds right go check out Sherman’s Shack for some of the freshest ingredients to ever hit your burger. This place is all substance but not enough flash. Too many places try super hard to be really trendy and have good food. This place has the food needed to be remembered for a long time and never feels like it’s tryin to copy other places. Sherman’s Shack ushers in is the age of the post trendy restaurant… Where instead of trying to be a super creative trendy spot that needs a pig and no logo or a day of the dead theme it’s just about the food. Do not get me wrong I love me some trendy spots but I loved the fact that this place doesn’t have to do «cool theme» to stand out. Check this place if you actually consider yourself a foodie.

They have fat juicy stuffed burgers!!! I live near by and we like this place. Accentuate the positive, it works at the Sherman Shack. We asked them for consistent stuffed burgers, new larger tacos, more fries, new menu items and a kid burger are good changes. One of(if not the best) burgers in San Diego, just having the audacity to introduce stuffed burgers in the barrio get’s them my loyalty. Drop by and support the team. All we need is ice and specials… Just try the Diablo Stuffed Burger once, you’ll see!

. BESTBURGER I’VEFOUNDINDOWNTOWNSANDIEGO! Thank you again, NBC7 San Diego, for«The Goods»; ya came through! This time it’s Sherman’s Shack, new place in Central San Diego. My home here’s way up in Esco, but these guys are worth the drive. To Beth D, self-confessed«burger-holic»(in Austin): you’d LOVE this place! Sherman’s has only been open 4 months, on a busy corner. They’ve got LOCATION, they’ve got the FOOD, & I really hope they succeed. These guys are as GOOD as the«other» Burger joint I reviewed in the area is BAD(find that one, skip over the 5-star idiots & read MY review). If you’re close enough to THEM, you NEED to come HERE, to Sherman’s Shack. As I do when in San Diego, I went w/Cuz Bob, so just like Crazee, yer gettin’ TWO reviews. We both agreed that this place is terrific. I think he said he’d give 4 Stars; me, I’m gonna give ‘em a full FIVE. It was Sunday afternoon, place is pretty new, so we were the only ones there. That’s OK, gave me time to quiz Jason about the place. I think he was all the staff present; nice guy, great burgerflipper. Décor is kinda Divey, which just seems just right for a «just ol’ burger joint». Nothing Divey about the burgers! Bob had«Mid West» Burger. Quoting from menu: «Chopped bacon, cheddar, caramelized onion, pulled pork STUFFED burger smothered in honey BBQ Sauce». Or maybe my «Shack» Burger will do the trick. Again, quoting: «Bacon, caramelized onion, Monterey Jack cheese, jalapeño, mushroom STUFFED burger topped with an egg.» An EGG? I didn’t know I liked eggs on a burger, but this really does compliment everything else. Check out my pictures; make ya hungry? GOOD! You’ll notice I stressed the word«STUFFED»; ALL Sherman’s burgers are stuffed with SOMETHING. Originally, I was goin’ for the«Surf & Turf» Burger: «Garlic shrimp cream cheese STUFFED burger glazed with orange sweet and sour.» Does that sound GOOD or what? My Shack Burger was stupendous, but next time I’ll try this one. OR maybe«El Diablo». I’ll «get in shape» by practicing with Hopdoddy’s(Austin TX) version of «El Diablo». Ya gotta TRAIN for these things, folks! Both Bob’s burger and mine were thick, JUICY, & tasty. If I recall correctly, they’re 1⁄3 lb patties. Whatever the size, they’re perfect for that all-important«meat-to-bread» ratio. Burgers were juicy largely because UNLIKE the“other” nearby Burger joint, when it came to how done we wanted ‘em, Bob and I ASKED for«medium», and we GOT medium. BEST way to have a burger, IMHO. «Medium», at the other place, means: «NUKE ‘em, Danno!». I’m sorry to keep referring the«other guys», but Sherman’s is so CLOSEBY geographically, but so FARABOVE in quality compared to the«other» guys. The«other» guys got featured on Guy Fieri’s show(Food Network); IMHO, THAT’S why they have so much business, NOT because of the FOOD. I’m LOTS more wary of ol’ Guy’s opinion now! OK, back to Sherman’s. The accompanying French Fries were cooked to the right degree of doneness. The fries were average, and I mean that in a good way. I won’t even eat fries if they’re not good, and I ate every one, so I found ‘em acceptable. BUT when ya put ‘em on the same plate as Sherman’s BURGERS, you’ve got one HELL of a combination. Jason wanted us to try the CHURROS, so he gave us a free order; like I said, very nice guy. Sherman’s has a different take on Churros. Theirs are CHEWY, not overly crisp and likely to blow away in a strong breeze, like others. COVERED with sugar & cinnamon; DELICIOUS. If you’re used to the kind you usually get, it might take a moment to get used to, but once ya start, you’re gonna have trouble stopping! Not in the mood for a burger? Maybe a taco would be more up your alley. But not just ANY taco; no, a Sherman’s taco. They’ve got(among others) Carne Asada, Shrimp, Drunk Chicken, and Carnitas. I don’t know what one of you VEGHEADS would be doing anywhere around a place that sells MEAT(glorious MEAT), but if you get dragged in there by one of your carnivorous friends, get yerself a «Vegan Orange Chicken» Taco. DON’T worry it’s actually Tofu; you’ve SAFE. Also«Market Price» fish, with variety of breadings /batters, including Coconut & Tempura(BOTH are favorites of mine). It ‘s a bit of a drive for me, but there’s lots more to try, & I know it’ll ALL be good! I HIGHLYRECOMMEND Sherman’s Shack. These folks are new, and most new businesses really need that initial support, and YOUR word-of-mouth. This place DESERVES to continue. It’s easy to support a place that has GREATFOOD, so this shouldn’t be a problem, you San Diego«Downtowners». Head over to Sherman’s Shack for lunch; and grab a coupla co-workers, even the Vegans! I’m picky about my burgers; if I didn’t like ‘em I’d tell ya; read some my NEGATIVE reviews if ya don’t believe me(especially«other» place in the immediate area). In the case of Sherman’s Shack, I promise you Burgerheads a great experience! larrythediner .

The menu reads like a Jane Austin novel, but the food tastes like something from Red Robins :( As many other people have posted, the prices are too high and the bun was soggy. Also, the fries are straight out of a frozen bag. I do not want to give up on this place. All they need to do is read these reviews, adjust to the constructive criticism, and they will be successful. I have faith.
