Smith Fence Company

Needing a new fence, my husband contacted Chris for an estimate. He came to the house and gave an estimate. The job was a little tricky due to mature landscaping which we eventually decided to remove. Chris and his crew were great. They worked really hard during very hot weather. End result: a beautiful new fence that exceeded our expectations. Nice job.

I am a guy who love to support small businesses specially those ones who inherit business from their parent. Chris smith is a perfect example. He is the guy who answers the phone, give you estimate and show up to do the work. This guy is awesome. I had to replace one side of the fence in my back yard and Chris smith gave me a bid less expensive than 2 other major companies in the area. I couldn’t be happier! I highly recommend this company, these guys been fencing for over 40 years and sure enough no comprise in the quality.

Seems like everyone else is really inpatient. It was clear from what I have read that this company is owner operated and as such I expected delays in return phone calls and estimates because he did the work himself. I had a «small job» and Chris the owner Did an amazing job showed up a little late but that is par for the course for all contractors in San Diego. He used the best materials around but his price was still one of the lowest. The best part was the same person that did the estimate did the work so any issues with the job I had one person to deal with. I did have to leave messages every time I called but usually got a call back in a day or two. Out of 6 estimates I received Chris was the only one who explained what Master Posts were, why they were better then round posts, used hand picked materials from J&W instead of the junk from Home Depot, and the only contractor to be honest with me about the scope of my job. Every other estimator told me my entire fence had to be replace otherwise it would fall down. Chris told me that was not true and that a few easy repairs (which he made) would increase the life another 10 years. Chris is prideful about the quality of work he installs and always tells the truth. If you are going to consider a fence contractor have some patience and give Chris a call you will not regret it.
***On a side note I confronted Chris about the bad review here on Unilocal and he explained that if you check any other site (Google reviews or Kudzu) you would find great reviews and testimonials his site even includes several. He did not even try to bad mouth the people writing them he let the truth shine through. I checked and this was correct. I also did some research and realized that all the bad reviews were never customers which is a poor resource for how a company is with its work and quality. With the short detail-​less reviews I have to assume it is a disgruntled employee or an unhappy competitor.***

I read the reviews on Google and decided to contact A Smith since he had very high marks and was right around the corner from my home. I contacted him on Tuesday morning and have not heard back as of Thursday evening.

Read about Smith Fence on Google Reviews (Should have checked Unilocal) and called about getting an estimate. Chris (the owner?) called me back, and we set an appointment for a Saturday morning to meet at the property and discuss the job.
Saturday morning came, and I was there on-​time. He was not. After :15 I called and left a message inquireing if he was running late. Left another message at :45 After :90 of waiting with no response, I left.
Their websight claims their ‘hours of operation’ are 7:30 — 5:30 ‘seven days a week’.
48 Hours later and there has been no follow-​up call to the missed appointment, or my telephone calls.
Business must be good for Smith, he certinaly dosen’t need mine.

I don’t know what happened to Chris, but he made 2 appointments to give an estimate and was a no-​show for both. After the first he called two days later, apologized and made another appointment. But for the next he never called, never showed. I don’t know what happened, Chris, if you read these reviews. You sounded so proud of your high ratings. But if this is any kind of pattern for you, you will lose your good reputation in a hurry if you keep this up. I’m a potential customer lost.

Called this dude out to give me an estimate for fence install. Piece of cake job, he said. Could do Friday or Saturday. After 3 days of waiting for an estimate to give OK (& 3 calls) he finally emails and says he can’t do it. Too small, can’t get truck down street, yadda yadda, started a big job. Not cool.

I called this company 5 or 6 times, but I always had to leave the message, and I have not gotten a reply yet.
P. S. I read the review by DC one day after my review was posted and wondered why the company could treat customers so differently…
