Star of India

We had fun checking out the ship and its history.
We lucked out with parking but I could see it being a challenge to find a spot sometimes.
There is a tour you can take that allows you to see not only this ship but about a dozen others all in one tour.
There was a kiosk in front that will give you all the details.

Had my son’s team banquet on the Star of India, who would of know that was even possible? They all had a great time! It was a unique and fun experience.

Still looks (and smells) like it did back when I was a kid. It’s one of my favorite ships to tour via the Maritime Museum.
— Multiple decks full of information, artifacts, ship models, and even a kid’s pirate ship on the orlop deck.
— Some of the mannequins look sickly. Not sure if that was for historical reference or just that they’re not aging very well.
— One thing that I used to remember, but you can’t hear now (because of fans) are the clicking noises of the barnacles on the ships hull. You’ll actually hear them if you go to the lower decks of the Berkeley however.

My whole family had an amazing time walking around The Star Of India. Absolutely beautiful. We will go visit many many more times before the end of the year.

Beautiful ship! It was there 20 years ago and still it’s beautiful. You see awesome view of the ship and the sea. It’s never hot. But come early so you tour all ships in that strip

First annual Earth day at the bay today and admission was free!!! Wooohoo! The sun was out shining and what a great day to celebrate and enjoy the ship.
The staff are very knowledgeable
and are super welcoming and go out of their way to give you bits of information and share.
Because it was earth day we got to enjoy all of the museums for free including the star of India, the submarines and the Berkeley Ferryboat. It was fascinating to see how travel life was back then when traveling on the star of India was the only option.
My son walked in to the bathroom of what the passengers would have used and couldn’t believe it. Hahaha! He said he was glad he wasn’t born back then.
I also love how the sleeping quarters were reenacted with the mannequins.
It made it easier for my kid to imagine and ignited a whole load of questions. Every now & then the ship would rock and creek which made us feel like we were passengers on this amazing historical ship.

I chaperoned a field trip to the Star of India.
I guess if you come here on your own. it is a completely different experience… you are granted admission and get to cruise around the boat …
not the case with a field trip…
the staff was completely in character as far as costume, lingo, behavior, and time period.
all people on the ship are referred to as men, since there were no women on the boat during this time.
time was just after the Boston Tea Party
each man was assigned a job… the staff represented the captain, 1^st mate, 2^nd mate and so on…
the children were split into 5 groups each with a leader (Mate?)…
kids were instructed on how to respond to the captain, how to line up, how to act and so on… it was so much fun!
the groups had different rotations… they learned how to coil the ropes… they learned how to raise and lower the sails, how to raise and lower the life boat, we all rowed a long boat out into the water… there were more activities that lasted a total of about 3 – 4 hours (including our lunch break)…
it was a fabulous experience for the kids to act out what they have been learning in class… and it was a fabulous experience for parents/​chaperones to be a part of…
i am excited to chaperone this field trip when my next child does it!
FYI…the do field trips… starting at $ 500, they said that they cater it to whatever age group you bring and you can pick what activities the crew does with your group

Great historical ship. Must visit. Its part of the SD Maritime museum exhibits. Family had fun visiting the museum and the ship.

This ship is just straight-​up awesome. We’ve been twice; my young son thinks that this is Blackbeard’s ship (thanks, ComiCon!). The second time was for the Make-​A-​Wish Pirate and Princess event. I love that the Maritime Museum participated; exposing the kids to tangible history is great.

Believe it or not, yesterday’s visit to the Star of India wasn’t my first time aboard — that was actually during last year’s Comic-​Con. She had been redressed as a pirate ship to promote the upcoming Assassin’s Creed video game, and the line to see her was long! (Then again, with normal admission being $ 16 and a bunch of out-​of towners in the area, no wonder the line to go aboard the Star of India, I mean, the Jackdaw was lengthy.) You know Comic-​Con has hit it big when even the Star of India participates in cosplay for SDCC… anyhoo, though I finally boarded the ship for the first time and got a chance to look around, all the video game displays and demos were kinda distracting. I had resolved to go do the tour properly one of these days — and this weekend Kathy and I finally did so.
Lots to see and learn about when onboard… from her history as the trading vessel Euterpe, to her time as a passenger ship, to when she was hauling lumber, and ultimately being rechristened as the Star of India during her days as part of the salmon fishing fleet. The displays are informative (who knew that some of the cases were originally the fishermen’s bunks?), and the pictures and paintings onboard are beautiful. Even one of the original privys is still around (complete with bucket)… I was actually tempted to sit down, though I didn’t do so!
One day, I want to see her make her annual trip to sea — I’m sure the Star of India would cut a dashing figure as she makes her way through the bay.

The ships and Subs are cool to look at but it’s a little bit too pricey and not cool enough for me to want to cough up $ 16 for a tour of the boat or $ 5 to board it I’m happier looking at them from the docks! All the people I saw leaving the ship looked like they were sea sick errr I mean bored! Maybe If I was 5 or if they had a bar on the submarine I would be more interested! Party on the sub anyone?

A chance to walk around the oldest active sailing ship in the world? I’m on board! We LOVED this floating time capsule. The exhibits are great, we got parking karma, the whole experience was wonderful. Very good tour and even a little gift ship, er shop.

Great ship to tour. Very informative. We weren’t able to spend much time since we had to get back home, but it would definitely be easy to spend a half-​day soaking in all the displays.

One maritime superstition is to never change the name of a ship. This ship’s name was changed from the entreped to its current name Star of India. According to some very good sources, mainly volunteers and maritime museum this ship is haunted. On a voyage from Britain this ship mysteriously claimed the life of a Scottish Sailor. Many claim he roams the deck of the ship and plays jokes on those who come aboard. Just walking by this ship at night gives me the creeps. I would not board this ship for a million bucks.

An SD landmark that we are lucky enough to see daily when we walk our dog-​pretty cool to visit every now and then.

We just held our son’s and daughter-​in-​law wedding/​reception on the Star of India and could not have been any happier. Beautiful, historic venue that appealed to the young and «older» at heart. The kids never got bored as they could explore the entire ship and the «older» kids, many who have sailed themselves for years loved reading the history and walking all the decks. The event staff came from the Maritime Museum including the caterers. The food was wonderful and the staff professional and attentive. We were fortunate to have a beautiful evening with a classic San Diego sunset adding to the special night at hand.

I’m on a boat! This classic SD maritime landmark is a must see. Friendly tour guides greeted us as we boarded the vessel. They even told us of the ghost on board named Jonathon, who was a stow away that died on it. Lot of history and great photo ops to be had on here.

Love this ship. Especially in the rain and wind. I felt like the Captain of the Black Pearl… Arrr!
Lots of interesting things to see both onboard this ship and in the other Maritime Museum vessels.
FYI — Not the best choice for those mobility impaired — lots of stairs.

I’m on a boat! A big, creaky, scented ship!
I have to admit, the Ghost Hunters episode was one of my reasons for boarding the Star of india. Yeah, it’s haunted.
The girlie pirate with the cockney accent was amusing, the rope samples fuzzy to examine… but the best part, the pictures of little woodsy spaces on the ship. If you are into photography & playing with light, the Star and entire Maritime museum is a gorgeous subject.
There were museum staff/​volunteers practicing climbing and other activities beyond the ropes, like monkeys, which was an added bonus.
One of the best moments in SD was just sitting in the bow, feeling the gentle rocking and lapping water… which was eventually disturbed by rambling comic-​com geekery on the dock.
Good, clean, touristy ship.
