Before I moved here a friend took me here and I must of had the look of WTF when I saw all the cafeteria style vats of food. The friend saw my look and said we can go some place else I said OK and we bolted. I am in NOWAY a fan of cafeteria style food service, that’s why I have never eaten at Chipolte. It’s hard to control proper temperatures that is required to prevent food poisoning and if it IS heated properly the food is generally overcooked. Anyway i know everyone in SD loves the place so eventually after moving here I decided to throw caution to the wind one day and give it a shot. I am glad I did it. They have very authentic delicious food and it’s brought out fresh regularly. Some items are made to order like the AMAZING chili relleno’s. There is another glorious stuffed chili with pomegranate dish(chile en nogada) only served Sept, Oct and November. The have quite possibly the BEST mole I have tried next to Cantina Mayahuel, maybe even better. And unlike CM you don’t have to wait a special day to get it. It’s served everyday! I recently tried this poblano onion corn stew(aka Rajas con Crema) and OMG I am in love. They will give you a sample of any of the stews, soups and sauces which is awesome for people like me who have no idea what some of the items are. It’s so authentic it’s like being across the border but here in SD I am a fan!

The food is amazing. You can sample most of the foods before ordering and there is a variety of meats, veggies, spice levels, etc. to choose from. The menu rotates daily so you could come often and still have new dishes to try. We ordered a variety of dishes. The antojitos(sopes, empanadas, etc) were ok but every veggie side dish and each mole, soup, and stew we tried was rich and flavorful. The price was good for the quality and quantity of food as well.

You know the meal is going to be good when you choose an ethnic food and when you sit down to eat you are surrounded by people of that ethnicity. Had a one item combo with pork, beans and rice and left happy.

I bookmarked this place a while back, but assumed it was because they had good reviews for tacos or burritos. Once I walked in, however, it was obvious the typical Mexican American fare was not on the menu. Rather, this place is kinda like a Mexican version of Panda Express. And by that I mean it’s a buffet-like selection, but not a buffet-like«free for all.» You pick a combo plate, usually with beans and rice, and then point out a selection of 1 – 3 other main entrees. I’ve only been once, but it seems the specialty here are stews. The staff were great, offering little tasters of just about everything… beef stew, menudo, chicken in cilantro sauce, etc. I went with a pork in hot chili sauce and chicken mole. The lunch combo, with a soft drink, ended up near $ 12, but given the complexity of the sauces, I was happy to pay — even though it was a counter-order place. Don’t go is you are seeking a burrito or rolled tacos. This is more like stopping by Grandma’s place on a Sunday.

The best Mexican food experience I ever had! Other than the times I would eat Mexican food whenever my friends had some sort of fiesta, this was an experience I would not forget. Just from entering I knew that this place was going to be very good because the majority of the customers here were Latinos from all walks of life, making me realize that in terms of authenticity, this place is very serious. The service here was actually really good especially since the lady knew that it was my first time eating guisados. I didnt even ask and she gave me free samples of some of the food. The food comes very fast especially since everything is already cooked and served in front. If I have to be very honest, I had no idea what to order because the food looked so good. Though she gave me the samples, I randomly picked two guisado trays one of which I found out later was pollo en salsa verde and the other I simply called beef or pork in red sauce. I also ordered a chico pozole and a medium horchata. They also gave me six warm tortillas de maiz(They usually give 3 per order). For everything, the total came out $ 17.50. The pozole was definitely very good and did remind me of the very first time I had homemade pozole at my friend’s. There was so much flavor to it that I regretted that I didnt order the grande. The guisados had lots of flavor to and the ingredients definitely tasted fresh. With the warm corn tortillas along with the rice and beans, the result was an experience that made my drive from LA all worth it. The people here are definitely very serious about authenticity and accept nothing less. This is not like a typical Mexican restaurant where only tacos, burritos, and many other Tex Mex foods are served. Heck, I’m sure they would laugh at me if I asked for flour tortillas instead of corn. For the friendly service and the homely experience, this is one of those restaurants that deserve a 5 star rating for how much love they put into the food.

I have been trying the various Mexican food places in the corridor between the 805 and the 15 on University. A lot of the places don’t suit my Pescatarian eating habits, but I’ve been looking for dishes I can eat since it’s all right around the corner from the pad. Super Cocina offers a menu with Vegetarian options, which are mostly breakfast egg dishes. I ordered the Cheese enchiladas in green sauce. It was good, but the enchiladas turned out very soggy. It wasn’t so bad though, because the green sauce was pretty good. It came with a side of rice and whole beans, which were average. I also ordered two cheese empanadas, which were more chewy than crisp, and didn’t quite gain my support. The queso fresco they use is really good though. Where the food lacks in salt, it’s replenished by their moist, salty variety. Authentic Mexican: yes. Good vegetarian options: only if you like cheese, or breakfast. I upped my rating to 3 stars, because the nice lady at the counter was very kind and helpful. The prices are not too steep, which is a plus. I’d say meat eaters probably have a better experience here, by the looks of the the food and the menu.

I’m sorry, I did not heart the Super Cocina. Everything I ordered was rich and under salted. Ordered a «super taco» and got two corn tortillas with some meat and bean mixture that just fell apart completely before I could pick it up. Also missed some salsas or accompaniments with my meal. They were however very friendly, so no complaints about customer service. Overall just didn’t dig the food all that much.

Authentic is the best way to describe this place. This is like eating straight out of my grandmas house in Mexico. Not a fancy looking place but if you want a good authentic Mexican dish you must go here. Perfect if you are hungover and need Menudo for the cure best part is they have menudo everyday. The service is great and they actually offer samples of the food of like everything which Makes it easier to decide on something although if you love food like me than you’d probably want it all. Enjoy! Beer is served all they need is micheladas

A different, heartier brand of Mexican cuisine that will not leave you disappointed. Fantastic and flavorful food at a exceedingly reasonable price. Hole in the wall, no ambiance joint that is worth seeking out.

Super Cocina is a welcoming breathe of fresh air that sets itself apart from the typical taco shops. Here you’re going to see a greater variety of Mexican food beyond burritos and tacos. I ordered the chorizo and eggs plate. The plate was freshly made to order(I think I was the first person there) and it was a great mix of chorizo and eggs. I was shocked to receive tortillas with my meal. Usually this costs extra! It’s a great deal. Ambience is typical hole in the wall joint. There’s a parking lot which is a plus. Other than that, don’t expect a lot of frills here… You’re here to eat, not fall in love across the candlelight.

Came here with my girlfriend for some good authentic Mexican food. Now there’s no doubt this place is Mexican, but the problem was that got my gf’s order completely wrong. She’s vegetarian. They advertise vegetarian options. She ordered the cheese enchilada and the owner said«okay». I myself got a burrito. When we got our order every thing looked good. Too bad this wasn’t the case. She bit into her chicken enchilada. I went back to the owner and I said that it was chicken and not cheese. All she said was«okay. We don’t serve cheese enchiladas» 1st of all my gf who has been vegetarian for 6yrs chewed on chicken. 2nd. No apologies. 3rd. Don’t advertise anything that you don’t have. Will never go here again. Vegetarians stay AWAY.

I’ve been wanting to eat authentic Mexican food for awhile now. Living in SD, it’s not even hard to find authentic Mexican places. But what I’ve been craving the most was menudo. So that’s what I ordered as one of my choices in the combination plate that comes with beans, rice, and 2 meats of your choice. For some reason I felt really guilty while I was eating the menudo. It felt like I was eating/drinking lard. The taste of the soup was funky, but it was just from the tripe(beef stomach). After I knew that, I didn’t feel so bad eating it anymore. The portion size they serve is more than enough. I was able to save half of my meal for later. Next time I really want to try their pazole and enchiladas. Drools, just thinking about it.

Hidden gem! My boyfriend and I came here on out date night because my roommate suggested we try it. So glad we did. This place is definitely a hole in the wall, and the Mexican food is definitely some of the best we’ve had. Forget tacos and burritos; this place offers some hearty stews that are really rich in flavor and can range from mild to super spicy! We both got the two entrees that came with rice, beans, and tortillas. I got this spicy pork stew that by the time I was done my mouth was on fire(in a good way!). Unfortunately, I can’t tell you the names of the stews we tried because this place doesn’t label their foods, but that’s ok, I can assure you that all the food here is really good. Plus, the people behind the counter were really nice and let us sample the food so we could pick what we wanted to eat. They also have pozole and mole, and it looks like they have menudo. We were so impressed with the food, cheap prices, and helpful staff that we are definitely going to come back. :)

Hidden little gem located in Normal Heights with super authentic mole! The Latino George Clooney was super receptive and kind! He made sure we were all taken care of. There was so much food to chose from! The staff very courteous and kind. The food is authentic and saucy! The rice pudding has a great cinnamon/horchata taste! Get some pepian with arroz and tortillas or try one of each!

Real Mexican food… I don’t think I had authentic Mexican food that was not a burrito or some kind of taco. It was a lot like Filipino food, very meaty and saucey. There were also a bunch of cheese stuffed in whatever you can think of. I had some chicken in green sauce, pork in red sauce, creaky mushrooms, crispy pork and a lot of other things that I cannot name. They were all delicious! I love the different sauce but my favorite was the chicken in this really spicy sauce. I wish I knew names but if you look at my pic I just got everything this place has to offer. Dessert– we were able to get this rice porridge dessert much like horchata. We also got the corn cake, which tasted like a cake mix with a corn bread. It wasn’t too bland and wasn’t too sweet… Just right! Located a bit in the«ghetto» but it’s not too bad. Don’t let the streets, old buildings, and hoodrat scare you off. It’s a good Mexican food to go place.

The combo was a good deal, I got double rice instead of beans and rice with: chicharron in a green salsa: delicious. spicy pork: it’s like a thai food spicy level 4 – 5, so good and I need more rice! Their rice is flavorful a bit of onion, tomato, garlic. They give you plenty of corn tortillas. menudo: the tripe just tasted weird, like it wasn’t cleaned thoroughly. I have had more beef parts in Cantonese(HK style beef entrails) and Vietnamese dishes that I just can’t accept this taste… pozole: comes with a choice of tortas or tortilla. After eating the home-made ones a coworker shared that his mom made for his birthday, I’ve been on the search for some really good red pozole. I really wanted to like this but the broth isn’t as flavorful as I expected it to be… Flan: it’s creamy and it’s delicious! I’d come back and try their guisos again. + flan. :)

There is a reason why this place is called«Super Cocina.» It’s because they make some super food in that kitchen of theirs. Specifically, I am referring to the delicious large bowl of Red Pork Pozole that I enjoyed for lunch. The best part about this bowl of pozole was that it came brimming with tender savory pork and soft hominy. There was no skimping on the goodness here and after adding some shredded cabbage, dried oregano, chopped onions, and a squirt of lime juice, I was ready to dig in( ). The soup had great flavor of red chili, pork, and some great seasoning and herbs. The pork meat was so tender, that it easily fell apart with the touch of the spoon, not to mention quite tasty as well( ). The soup came with corn tortillas and they were not only great for rolling up and dipping in the soup, but for making tacos out of the savory pork meat( ). Like I said, the soup came with a lot of hominy, which put a smile on my face because I have not run across a soup with this much, in quite a while( ). If you are a fan of pork pozole, as I am, you may need to try some here. The family and employees who work here are very nice. A great hang over soup…

Serves comforting Mexican food. An authentic, mom and pop’s joint! SC has become my to go to spot for a truly genuine, home cooked style, Mexican soup. I have a particular craving for he caldo de res(beef soup) when the sniffles come around. Their chicken is just as wonderful. Both as you’d imagine or hope to taste like. Full flavored broth, veggies, and they put in a good portion of meat, served with a side of rice and tortilla. A good value at $ 3.99 for a decent sized small, even when I stick to just eating the soup. Even though I haven’t gotten anything else, I often look at the all the great stuff they offer which you can see right at the counter. Yep, everything looks so good(but in a bad for me, kinda way ;) like it came straight out of someone’s own home kitchen. If I were ever in the mood for the real deal, and not a taco shop or a gourmet rendition of Mexican eats, this would be the place to get that!

To find a restaurant that makes pozole worth eating is a chore. I have found it! Spicy goodness but oh so flavorful Super Cocina has rocked my pozole world. Honestly, my mouth is watering as I type this review. I think I’m tainted for good now after the first spoonful. It was a day that my sister and I were going walking… somehow she gets me out of bed with promises of good decisions and exercise and she pulls the old bait and switch! This is one of her favorite spots, we have been here a few times and have never been disappointed! The girl is even a fan, picky ass kid. If you go and like a little spice in your life, ask if they have any pozole. Oh and they let you taste the sauces, some may be a little hot. I definitely recommend tasting them!
