Took a very bad spill on my bike this week & ended up with a ghastly gashed leg that my primary doctor would not treat. I was told to go to the ER due to the severity of the laceration. Once I got to Scripp’s Mercy hospital, I waited while a doctor or two took a look. Eventually, the gods of medicine must have been smiling down upon me that day, as Dr. Randal Vecchione – a plastic surgeon, was upstairs and was called to come down to gauge the damage. At first the talk was to admit me to OR, knock me out and try to clean out and sew up the wound. But I was not interested in being hospitalized & having had these kind of injuries before,(although not as severe) I asked that the Doctor numb the area & do the best he could with stitches. Well, Dr. V did a great job with my poor leg. He even had a intern Doctor on duty who watched & learned as the surgeon put me back together. I was instructed to keep the wound dry, take the prescribed medication & come back to his office on 2nd Ave. for a wound check in two days. I went to this nice office today and Dr. V changed my bandage & gave me the bad news that I will need to have a skin graft on my leg to plug a hole & they will take the skin off my behind! Well, if this is what the good Doc wants to do, I just hope that he scrapes a little extra off the rump & I give it to him free to use as he likes! 5 UnilocalSTARS for a VERY distinguished physician who is extremely skilled at what he does. Dr. Vecchione’s specialty is plastic surgery and he is on staff at Scripps Mercy, Green & Memorial Hospital’s. Reconstructive surgery of the face and hand is his forte but I will say that he managed to sew my gaping leg wound up quite nicely!
